if you are on this video it is certainly because you are asking yourself the question “But what am I going to put in my panniers when I go traveling by bike?” Well you ‘re on the right video we’re going to explain everything to you thanks to our experience of more than a year and a half on the roads of the world by bike and that’s not nothing because there were equipment changes along the way there were modifications there were things that we didn’t need and that we sent home and today we only have the essentials left in these panniers and ultimately that’s what everyone is looking for what is it it’s the essential thing to have in these panniers when traveling by bike and today this video is the opportunity to present to you everything we have with us everything we own is our life in itself our whole house our house for 17 months currently this video is filmed in Canada so we can tell you that we have come a long way and that if there are things that are in these panniers that are still there now it is because they are really useful because we have when even crossed 20 countries with all this equipment I think you’re ready there so we’ll take you with us in our bags and we’ll show you all our equipment so you can organize your next bike trip we’re going to get naked you’re ready let’s go let’s go let’s go! We left everything to travel by bike, we are Fiona and Bryan and we are taking you with us on a world road with an adventure and learning program that we share with us so welcome to this new video of the sound of gravel So I am going to present to you what I have in my bike or on my bike should I say we have a slightly different setup with Bryan so that is why we are each going to present our two bikes to you you will be able to take what is relevant for you for your adventure perhaps transpose it into your business so we’re going to start at the front and we ‘re going to work towards the rear all our panniers are Ortlieb panniers we are lucky to be a partner with Ortlieb they provided us with all these panniers we were able to choose them to measure and we are really completely satisfied with them since they are waterproof and that I can’t tell you how important it is when you travel by bike to have waterproof panniers it’s priceless honestly so I’m going explain this setup to you because it’s true that you see all our YouTube episodes but you don’t necessarily see how what’s stored inside so here we go I’ll start here with the crux of the matter it’s the handlebar bag my precious handlebar bag if ever there’s a fire or anything it’s the only thing I take and I run with it in fact I’ll explain it to you here we have the video equipment if you haven’t seen it yet we made a video capsule of our multimedia equipment and how we make videos while traveling by bike I strongly invite you to watch it it was very informative and you will really learn how we create our YouTube videos how we create our YouTube episodes while traveling there is no need for a huge setup to be able to travel around the world so here at this level handlebar bag I have in my case my camera with two lenses one on the device a storage and everything that is microphone also remote control to make shots from afar in addition to that I have a wallet passports are very important to always have with you I also have in the little subtleties our little card that’s things in the backstage that we’re going to show you but that you don’t usually see in the episodes little business cards for when we meet people sometimes we have people who are very interested in what we do and then we tell them that we have YouTube videos and well they’re interested in knowing where they can go to see that and for that we made little business cards They gradually scattered around the world fortunately we had supplies thanks to the sister from Bryan in Thailand I also have the keys for the lock, for example, little things like that, it’s a bit of a bag, what’s really practical is being able to take the bag easily, the little subtlety is that it’s a really easy bag to take, just with a button, you can remove it and you can go to the supermarket and we have all the valuables with us, so those never leave my side, which is also very nice with this bag, it’s that it has a transparent front which allows you to decorate it either to put a few souvenirs that you collect during the trip or to perhaps put photos of your loved ones or if you are more old school to put a map with your itinerary as far as we are concerned the setup changed a little as the trip progressed but at the moment it’s more souvenirs from Canada so we bought patches in the different national parks that we visited and also stickers and we put that inside and then it’s going to give us great memories when we get back here’s what’s going on with the handlebar bag now at the level of the bags before the bags before what is especially important to know is that I have the waterproof clothes they must always be there also the clothes which can be a little warmer like the gloves or the ear gaiter or the neck gaiter I put them there because they are very easily accessible and that is super important because many times it has rained it wasn’t planned so if all your rain gear they’re in the rear panniers and you have to empty everything to take them in a hurry it’s going to be bad now that we’ve done the front we’re moving to the middle I think you see it I don’t need to dwell on it two 750 ml stainless steel cans really good so that the water doesn’t get hot too quickly and especially so that the water doesn’t take on the taste of plastic over the months and that it’s really a criterion on which we didn’t want to skimp then here you have the toolbox we especially have the essential tools for a quick repair everything that is a tool for changing an inner tube if we have a puncture it’s there and there so it must be quick and easy to take because you never know when it’s going to happen of course and here we have something specific to Canada the bear spray which was very useful to us in the rockies in fact since we arrived in Calgary serves us more to a lot and I hope that we can leave it to someone to whom it will be just as useful for their next trip and now the bulk of the subject the rear of the vehicle the backpack and the two rear bags we chose a backpack because it allows us to be able to go hiking and that we did a few during our trip such as for example in Taiwan and it was very very practical in this backpack we store the kitchen there so everything that is saucepan pan all the utensils for to cook as well as the spices they will be in my backpack in addition to that we found my Helinox chair there in the past we also had the table it must be said that we sent it home because in Canada it is full of picnic tables we no longer necessarily had any use for it and so we sent it back to Switzerland above that I am going directly to talk about something which is very current that we set up in Canada we bought a small waterproof 10 L bag in which we put the food at the time also again in the rocks it allowed us to put it in the trees easily but there we kept system because precisely when we have to picnic at midday and all that comes out and that gives us more space at the level of the large rear panniers that you see here as far as I am concerned I have a pannier which is dedicated to the night so sleeping bag mattress habit for the night socks in addition to that in this pannier there since it is well padded and everything I have put my iPad and my e-reader like that they are well protected and in the other bag well it’s simply all my spare clothes underwear and my toiletry bags this is my house for 17 months of course you can imagine that there are a few things missing and well that’s on Bryan’s bike because that’s the advantage of being two we can separate the things and it’s his turn to show you his setup. So it’s my turn to present to you how I stored my things the handlebar bag I store the drone and the GoPro in it in order to take everything out really easily I just have to lift and I access the GoPro to film while riding it’s really practical and the drone at the same time I can take it out very simply then I have a small bag in addition there it’s the frame bag and inside I store the wallet and the phone the glasses sun the Swiss knife also it’s really good to have it there for a picnic at noon you just have to open take the knife and it’s settled then in the same spirit here we keep the two water bottles and the gasoline bottle for the stove Fiona told you that she had the equipment to cook well I have the stove and the gasoline why the gasoline little tip that you will have to remind you is that in some countries you can’t find gas at the end we always have cooked with gasoline because it is much cheaper than gas and there are countries where the gasoline is more refined than others you will see it in Canada it works very very well the gasoline is very well refined it does not dirty the stove too much and it works really well in Asia all the countries a little bit more to the east the gasoline is really less well refined it is almost a little oily like that the stove will pick up but there with Canadian gasoline it works great and Besides , before continuing you have noticed that Fiona and I have the same saddlebags and then you are thinking to yourself how do you manage to avoid getting your brushes tangled easily Fiona is a little bit better organized than me she put little colored wool lassets on each of her saddlebags like that it allows her to know if it is right or left and for me it is a little more technical the hooks to attach to the bike have a hooking direction and so that prevents me from crossing them because otherwise she wouldn’t hook correctly so here are the two little tricks, each has its own thing and it works really well in fact she has never managed to give me her luggage so the proof is that it works so what do we hide in these two front bags I put everything that was clothes all my clothes are in the front bags like that it allows me to adapt as the day goes on relatively quickly to the weather so the rain gear jacket the down jacket is all at the front of the bike and it also allows me to change clothes quickly when we go to shower or I don’t have to unpack all my things and on top of that I put a small cooler at the front it’s practical it’s not incredible it doesn’t keep the cold all day it does the job when there is just a shop in the morning and we want to take dinner with us we are traveling and that I return here on that side with you know what the little Canadian subtlety my maple syrup by the way there is a little subtlety which is also really stylish is that on the Ortlibe bags there at the front there is this little strap which allows you to clip an item of clothing on it like for example I did it on this side I have the jacket on certain days when it rains it rains the more it rains it rains the more I simply attach them under the straps here and it’s really classy plus at the front here I have a small support to attach the GoPro I can film everything it works well and at the back it’s all the technical side there is a pharmacy kit where we have stored the essentials in terms of band thinking medication and at the front well I have a small kit where there is just Dafalgan medication for headaches allergies and excess like that if there is a little thing that happens during the day well it quickly came out on this side there is a repair kit kit with all the tools you need to repair a big problem here we have a nice little thing there that we installed in Canada it’s the little flag to say that we are Swiss it leads to even more discussions so don’t hesitate to put a little flag of your country or a little flag of your identity that you created for the trip it can be super nice and it really leads to a lot of exchanges on this subject so the food bag here it’s the backpack I put the tent there the water filter and the gas stove it’s three essentials in there on this side a Helinox chair the fabric bag to put all the bags inside to take the plane a repair kit also for the gas stove, gasoline stove I advise you MSR offers a small kit for doing small repairs or cleaning take it with because it’s not easy to find material to repair that so don’t hesitate it may be a relatively expensive kit but it can really save you the evening meal and on the other side it’s all the things for sleeping so it’s my bedroom it’s on that side there’s the mattress the sleeping bag the pillows the toothbrush the toiletry bag I even put the iPad on that side it’s really good because in the bags there’s a vertical slide you’d think it was made for and then here’s what we’re going to show you how we take all this out then how we set up when we’re at the campsite in fact you really see the equipment in its entirety and used by ourselves. [Music] So here is the crux of the matter, it is mounted behind the most important thing is done and there we are going to talk to you about the tent because you now know what we have in the bags but we have not talked about the subject that everyone is waiting for the big subject of discussion is to know which model of tent which mattress which sleeping bag and especially why these choices firstly we are going to talk about the tent behind at the base we are not going with this one we are going with a version of Decathlon tent but an old model which was much heavier than this one, seeing other travelers Decathlon had nevertheless improved the equipment and which offered this tent which is the MT900 model which weighs less than 3 kg which is extremely simple to assemble and which has three places and we are really happy with it because quality price it clearly competes with the big brands there we have had it all the way across Canada and it holds up well and our first tent had lived for more than 5 years it was starting to take a little bit the water the plastic was starting to be a little worn out so we didn’t want to take any risks especially since we were in Thailand at that time and we could have the MT900 waiting for a really good price cheaper than in France cheaper than in Switzerland so it was worth making the change at that time to that we now add the mattress to the base we said to ourselves let’s go with the Rolls-Rolls we do all the tests on the internet we see SeatoSummit best model the most comfortable of all the mattresses tested on the market but ultimately big disappointment after 10 uses Fiona’s let us down mine let us down in South Korea the after-sales service reacted more or less well we ended up getting something which was ultimately not at all what we wanted and in the end we went to Decathlon similar model the MT900 range we got something OK not great for winter but which is still comfortable today and which really holds up it’s solid let’s just say we handled it we didn’t have a hole we put it on floors that weren’t always incredibly clean and it held up we’re just happy with it the MT900 range from Decathlon it’s worth it and then that comes to the best of the best because we really have n’t been disappointed since the start of the trip it’s the sleeping bag the sleeping bag from Therm-a-Rest and here comes the question of shouldn’t we have left with all the equipment at Therm-a-Rest because all the people we met who had Therm-a-Rest they are all extremely happy with this gear they are really happy it holds up it’s solid there is a pre-sale service behind which seems to be really at the top and there we have Therm-a-rest Parsec comfort 0°C and there we slept everywhere it was really compressed in its compression bag almost to the maximum and every time we opened it we put it back in the sun for a little bit and each time it swells up again, it regains its volume and it keeps warm and we really spend very good nights inside and the pillows are simply the pillows from Decathlon the same in the end it really does the job we still took small ones we call them meat bags I think there are other terms on this subject but for us it’s the meat bag it’s really the fabric in which we put ourselves inside that’s limiting the dirt inside the sleeping bag and that makes the thing a little more comfortable we took them in silk personally I’m not really a fan of silk I realized while traveling that cotton corresponded better to my skin then Fiona’s side it’s more her opinion that she doesn’t like the meat bag she feels a little compressed in it a little bit difficult to move but she often sleeps with long pants and a t-shirt or a jacket a little more long and after that inside we always have a headlamp it is always practical to have a headlamp to spend the night in the tent we put a canvas which is sold in addition for all the tents they sell a support canvas above all it allows us to keep the tent in very good condition and that is frankly relevant advice and there is a little thing we improved a little during the trip since our mattresses were not really warm to spend cool nights we simply put our survival blanket on spread it inside, flattened it over its entire length and we were still able to keep it for quite a night each time folded the whole tent with the survival blanket inside it didn’t take up any more space but it allowed us to gain a few small degrees during the night to choose from, perhaps take a 3 season mattress anyway the 3 season model from Therm-a-Rest it’s our little change that we would make to our equipment that we presented to you just at So here it is and then well to explain all that to you I was well installed in my Helinox chair and this chair is really cool it is light it is easy to assemble it does not take up too much space and to do it again we would also put a small luggage rack at the front of the bike to hang it on so that it is really accessible at all times because sometimes there is not always a place to take the lunch break or sit down and if we could access the chair more easily we would would go out much more often so we presented you with all the equipment for sleeping and now we are going to introduce you to the kitchen again now. Here we are at the last stage of our equipment the kitchen it is me who presents it but I must admit that it is rather Bryan who is at the stove both at home and when camping I am going to present to you the few utensils and accessories that we have here in front of us and that we use every day for cooking so we are going to start with the essential Decathlon Popote and that we can only recommend it to you we are very happy with it we have had it since we traveled to Velo so already before the tour of world and inside we find a fork knife double spoon as well as small bowls what is important with this saucepan is that it has a capacity of 1.6 L and we can only recommend that you have one as large if there are two of you for example in the morning we heat water as much for our oatmeal as our tea and well it is a good capacity and then if you are making pasta especially you will need a larger volume and this saucepan does very very well the matter to this is added several things we took very practical plastic cups to drink microbrewery beers for example and in Canada we upgraded our equipment with these beautiful little cups in which we drink our tea or our hot chocolate in the morning to the pan add a pan which is here before your amazed eyes an MSR pan with a capacity of 1.5 L very very practical if you want to make French toast, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, in short everything you want browning this pan does the work and in fact it has the retractable handle so here and it immediately takes up less space so you store it somewhere and we generally put a small cloth at the bottom and we put our pan in like that it does the work then to mix your food and then brown, cook and all that you need utensils there we went for the MSR kit and this kit includes a very very practical little cutting board a ladle a spatula and another spatula that we took from our kitchen at home which allows us to scrape the edges of the pan well and then not leave a single crumb on top of that we have the essential Swiss army knife so there you can’t leave without it’s not because we are simply you can’t leave without a Swiss army knife we have two it’s the same model twice don’t do like us, take a model with a saw and scissors since we have two the same model and on both models and well we don’t have these two utensils so we strongly recommend that you pay attention to that it can be very useful now you have to heat all that thanks to our universal hot MSR which here it allows you to heat both gasoline and gas gasoline gas ok it’s not exactly that but I’ll explain this to you we can fill it with gasoline we go to the gas stations and then we put a little less than about an L here in Canada a little less than a dollar or 1 dollar and we can cook for a few evenings with it’s tip top the gas bottle gives us between 5 and 10 meals and we pay for it 1 dollar gas bottle 10 dollars 10 meals I’ll let you calculate which option you are going to choose that it allows you to use the gas bottle and then it allows you to use even more models of different gas bottles in addition with that in the universal MSR kit there was this little uh aluminum screen which is very useful because sometimes well we is not always in the best conditions sometimes we do not have a wall to protect ourselves and that does the job very very well what we also recommend is the maintenance kit with the accessories that are in there it allows you to clean and repair the stove and that frankly it is very practical especially since depending on where you are traveling you will not find this little thing if you have followed all our videos you should recognize it it is the small metal plate to prevent burning the food we put it between the hotplate and the saucepan and this allows you to have a slightly more ambient temperature than the jet of flame which comes just below so if you don’t want to burn your food or scorch as Bryan would say, then take a metal plate which will help you with cooking well now we have cooked well we have eaten well what do we need to do the dishes and yes well for that we had a very nice Canadian warmshower who gave us the basin so that’s very useful in this country only it’s just that some campsites surprisingly don’t have a sink to go and wash your dishes so there you just need to have a small basin to fill it with water and soap and then to clean all the dirt so how important we have a small bottle of dishes that we fill as our trip progresses with kind people who offer to fill our little bottle and of course a sponge we still have a small cloth to wipe a small microfiber cloth from Decathlon again and here the small cooler so obviously it doesn’t have ice inside so it doesn’t cool much but it’s still very practical to be able to keep food a little more or less fresh everything depends on the outside temperature until dinner for example if you go to the supermarket in the morning and you have the picnic at midday well it allows you to keep all that inside here we have a slightly aluminum coating which keeps the heat as well as the cold it seems to me that we have covered these utensils and this kitchen equipment we hope that it will have given you ideas in any case it was a great pleasure for us to show you what we use every day to cook in this regard you can find the detailed list of all our equipment on our website: www.lebruitdugravier.ch We have an article which lists all the equipment we had during this world tour. Well, we talked to you about everything that we contained in our bags but above all we didn’t explain to you how we chose these containers and that is very very important because it is not chosen lightly since it will contain our whole life and then it is better that it is well protected for that. For our part we trusted Ortlieb and we absolutely do not regret it. Ortlieb is a German brand and above all they make very robust bags and super important point waterproof and that we shouldn’t skimp on it since having to put waterproof bags on these saddlebags every time there are a few drops of rain which fall really average and very tedious very often there will be small showers which are enough to have to put on all our rain gear and 15 minutes later it’s already over so I’m not telling you that if we had to cover all of these five saddlebags with tarpaulins we would have already lost time we might still be in Asia from the South-East we have right next to me the backpack the backpack is 35 liters and it is very very practical little subtlety I have the women’s model it must be 34 L and Bryan’s is 35 L well it doesn’t matter much if you like to go hiking like us and then you intend to do a few hikes during a bike trip it’s really worth it since well you put it on your bag but you also put it on your back when you want to hike but not only if you take the plane it goes as hand luggage and it’s very practical the panniers that we hung on the front which are these are 12.5 L models it allows us to put quite enough things in addition to the large panniers which are just behind me which are 20 L and the smallest one is the handlebar bag it has a capacity of 6.5 L and this one has a little bonus it’s possible to decorate it and that’s quite nice a little tip that we hadn’t thought of before leaving but which is very useful to us now that we know it is that if you plan to take the plane during your bike trip weigh your luggage before leaving since with airlines we often have the right to 23 kg in the hold turns out that the things that go in the hold in this luggage that we put in a large bag are exactly a little less than 23 kg so on that side we were lucky we hadn’t thought about it before leaving but it’s something to really really watch out for if you’re thinking of taking the plane since otherwise the supplements can cost you a lot and we don’t necessarily want that in a trip we prefer to put our money elsewhere this one we manage to fill it at around 7 kg and that always falls within the cabin baggage standards of the airlines that we took in terms of the services from Ortlieb if you choose to go with this company and be aware that there are lots of sizes lots of other colors you really have the choice to equip your bike as you wish and even if you are more of a bikepacker you will also find a wide range of bikepacking luggage with them and if that interests you you will find on our website lebruitdugravier.ch under the garage tab a magnificent new photo with which you You will be able to select all the small pieces of luggage to know the reference of each item and that is rather very practical. well now I think it’s your turn in fact to make your list of equipment to take it now remains in your hands you can leave this video and then go pack your bags and then above all don’t forget that it’s also part of the trip to prepare your things to prepare your itinerary that’s also the excitement of the trip is to be in the preparation don’t hesitate to put us in the comments if you have any questions we will be happy to answer them if you haven’t left yet there is still a maximum of videos to watch about this whole adventure we tell you about everything in each video as you watch our entire cycling adventure you will learn a little bit more in each episode we really made the whole channel grow little by little and you will always see a little bit more it’s not because you don’t see in the first videos how we eat that we wo n’t present it to you later take the time to appreciate all the videos to watch the whole evolution of what’s happening you will really be able to experience this and really surrender take into account what a cycling adventure can mean and how it can change a life and above all don’t forget the best way is to try it for yourself so get started whether it’s around the house or in your country or in the country next door in any case it will make you incredible memories to bring home and well we’ll see you soon on YouTube or on the roads of the world by bike. do not hesitate to like comment subscribe and share our content we thank you for the support and we see you soon on the roads of the world by bike
