As I was leaving a friend’s house last night she walked outside and said “I heard you can see the northern lights tonight!”  So we walked out into the street and looked north.  You couldn’t see it with your eyes, but the phone camera was able to pick up some color.  (If you ever hear the lights are out, try your phone it can see it better than you can)  We gave up and she went inside and I started biking home.  I biked the mile through the neighborhoods and got on to the bike trail.  And once I was on the unlit bike trails you immediately could see it with your naked eyes!  It was like a spooky red patch in the sky, almost like your eyes were glitching out and you were seeing something not there.  When a tree passed into the foreground of the lights it gave it a sick backglow.  It was the first time Im my life I was able to see it with my naked eyes, after a couple nights trying too!

I passed a few other bikers and would let them know the northern lights were out, one of them pulled over and was like “No way!”  And there were small groups of people sitting along the bike trail as well watching it!  It was a festival atmosphere out on trails last night.  But then when I got back onto the roads for the last 2 miles of my ride you couldn’t see it any more, there was too much light pollution.

So reason number 10,002 for why biking is better than driving – you can see the northern lights so much more clearly.
