Building a bike at The Bike Jumble

Twice a year in NYC, there is an amazing event that I can only describe as a used bicycle and bicycle parts flea market, called The Bike Jumble!

I’ve been going for the last few years, but it wasn’t until September 2024 that I decided it would be a fun idea to show up with nothing but a few tools, hoping to build a bike from scratch and ride from Park Slope, Brooklyn, back home to the Bronx.

Welcome to the bike jumbo 2024. Uh we are in Brooklyn Park Slope. Uh today is basically uh for lack of better words a flea market where everyone is uh either here to sell their used bike parts or possibly buy used bike parts uh or sell their used complete bikes or buy used complete bikes. Uh today I am here in hopes to build a bike from scratch uh and bike back safely to the Bronx. Oh my god. But I’m just playing with them now. Yeah. Oh my god. What you saying? Say it loud. Yeah. But it is a disc. So rim bake rear and disc front. OB. It’s also a 1in red. We got a frame that’s really good. Uh cuz it’s a good size. The only concern about building this bike is uh the fact that the front wheel will be disc and the rear wheel will be caner lever rim brake. So finding wheels might be a little spicy. [Music] What are you asking for? Um I think yeah this is so smooth seal air hoping if you’re willing to do 50 I appreciate it. Hell yeah. Can you put some air in the Do you have zel? Um I did bring a few tools. I didn’t bring anything too crazy but a multi-tool. Uh a tri tool pedal too because why not? Oh dude, you’re beautiful man. I appreciate that. [Music] Moment of truth. Here we go. We’re in business. generally considered the best. First round, no luck. No 26 in rim brake rear wheel. Cool. Uh, thank you. I appreciate it. I don’t think I [Music] have tires. We got a 26 wheel set, disc brake front, rim brake rear, just set mounted. He wants a 100 bucks. He’s willing to talk. I would buy the rear one if he’s willing to separate them. Uh, and understandable to know if would you be willing to just settle for the rear wheel being sold or rear wheel for 50? Is that something that you might consider? Uh, only cuz I’m trying to build this from scratch here and I’m already going to have Don’t you have a matching set? I just bought this. If I if I would have known that early, I would have bought the whole wheel set. like you call an 8-speed cassette, which is great. Uh cuz my plan is to settle for 8-speed drivetrain because it’s probably a cheaper option. Uh and it also comes with a tire. So $50 is a steal train. I need a handlebar. I need saddles. I have I have a crank and brakes in my my uh truck bag. So if you happen to see Caner Lever brake bolts, you can have it. Oh, and we got a saddle for free. NYC. NYC V in the building. I am at the $200 mark, which means I have $100 left to ride this thing successfully. I’m on a secret budget. I’ll take something for five bucks if you guys like. Uh, so I realized I bought these bars, but I didn’t bother to check if it’s the right diameter for this. I could have just wasted $10. I jumped the gun. These aren’t going to work. Oh What do you want for those? I’ll send you extra. You sure, Michael? I appreciate you. Thank you. We actually have one. We’re awesome. People are awesome. Bike gang. Yeah. Thank you very much. We got crank bolts. Uh I think we’ll be able to get back to the Bronx safely. Uh so we have we have these V- brakes uh that will then go on the frame here. The guy who sent me the brakes, Luke, uh was nice enough to also give me a brake cable, which is wonderful cuz I need one of these, but I also need housing. I need uh housing caps. I also need a brake lever. I’m hoping to get all this for like $10. We’ll see what we could do. Uh maybe if I’m lucky, maybe free. What do you want for all of this? What do you have? I was hoping that $10 is reasonable. Take it for five. And a hug. And a hug. Hell yeah, brother. Yeah, man. All right. You They’re both XT. This one. No doubt about it. Either one’s up to you. I just got a Dior XT rear derailer for free.99. Shout out to the homie J. He’s a beautiful man. The bike app. I just got a rear derailer. I have a nine-speed shifter. I’m still kind of looking to see if maybe I can find like a friction shifter. Eight speed, right? Eight speed. It’s missing the little bottom. Uh that’s cool. As long as it works. Like I think they’re brake cables with this label. They’re like the thicker, but it says it like it’ll probably work. Talking about Yes, exactly. How much for it all? Thank you, man. $5. That’s perfect. Uh do you think um feels like I’m wearing nothing at all? Uh yeah, this [Music] one’s very Everything on this bike was purchased uh from the bike jumble. I came here empty-handed and this is kind of the final product. Uh, yeah. Now I have to ride home. So like, yeah, it’s solid. The rear wheel is super out of true and it’s still kind of wobbly, but it’s better than what it was. Yeah, it doesn’t look that bad. Yeah. It works. I just need grips. We’re good. I feel kind of confident. Free. Uh after a few hours and $255 later, uh it is a success. Uh, it’s not the best, but I think that this is enough to get me home safely. Uh, the wheels roll, the brakes work. Um, I’m just going to go [Music] Update. I got a flat. Uh, I made it to 72nd Street. Um, I didn’t think to buy an extra inner tube cuz I brought patches. Uh, but my inner tube valve malfunction. [Music]
