Hi everyone,
I'm writing to you because I can't figure it out with my bike and I hope that someone more experienced can give me a hand.

I have a vintage 4-speed bike, bought many years ago but practically never used (it was given to me as a gift, and it actually looks new). For a few months it worked great, then it started giving me an annoying problem: the chain always falls off the front chainring.

I took it to a bicycle dealer twice:
The first time he said the sprocket set wasn't well aligned, a little old, and he replaced it by adding a spacer. From that moment on, however, I can no longer use the 4 gears and the chain problem remains.

The second time he found a broken chain link and replaced it, but to no avail: the chain continues to jump.

Today, while I was trying to put it back on, I found another broken shirt.

The mechanic told me that either you change the entire transmission (putting a single speed) or you change the chain, but according to him chains of this type are no longer found.

At this point I would like to try replacing the chain (in my opinion that is the cause) and remove the spacer that prevents me from using fourth gear.

So I ask you:

Is it really that difficult to find a chain compatible with 4-speed bikes?

Is there any model or brand I could look for online or in stores?

Is it worth trying to reset the gearbox, or is it really worth switching to a single speed?

Thanks so much to anyone who will give me a hand!
