York’s friendliest cycling group doesn’t stop in the colder weather. As the nights draw in and the air turns crisp, many of us find it harder to motivate ourselves to get outside and exercise. But for the York Rers, this is the time when they really shine. The York Rers Cycling Club, proudly dubbed York’s friendliest cycling group, continues to ride together even as the fair weather fades. with a strong sense of camaraderie from the start. The club has grown from a small group of eight to a vibrant community of 300 members. From the beginning, the essence of this club has been a group of friends who love riding bikes, says Chris Wapington, the head of communications at YRCC. We’ve become a family growing from just 8 to 300 members. The club is genuinely inclusive with women making up a third of its members. But what keeps the reurs pedaling through the colder months. We offer a variety of activities during winter, Chris explains. Indoor training sessions and spin classes on Tuesday nights are popular. We also have track sessions at the sports village on milder evenings and strength training sessions with a triathlon coach. For those who might feel intimidated by a mixed cycling session, the group provides female only spin classes, ensuring everyone feels welcome. Chris highlights the benefits of these autumn and winter events. One of the best things is that people end up cycling with others they might not otherwise ride with. Since it’s all indoors, no one gets left behind and everyone stays together. The reurs play a crucial role in boosting mental health, especially for men who may struggle to find supportive environments. I believe it saves lives, particularly for men who might find it challenging to connect with others in similar situations. Chris asserts there are no prerequisites to join the RLERS. All you need to do is show up. If you decide to stay, the club asks for a modest £15 membership fee for the entire year.
