Hi, this is my build process of the Wheellab V Wing handlebar.
I'm currently building a new full aero bike, this is the first part of a serie.
Street riding at night is the main focus.
Components:
Wheellab V wing handlebar
Zipp SL sprint 140mm stem
Berk 1mm leather handlebar tape + Zefal skin armor
Fake hoods from u/mokumintipedalais
BLB tt brake lever
Rockbros handlebar lights
Now this is the part where I talk a lot :
I was looking for an aero handlebar with enough clearance to put a brake lever on the center, and a 36cm width or under. The V Wing is actually 38cm wide but when you put your hands just under the hoods it is 32cm wide, ideal hand placement for sprints. Unfortunately there isn't actually enough clearance for a center brake lever but I had a tt one lying around so internal cable routing it is then, annoying but doable. As long as I don't go to the velodrome too often. I should put some lube on the cable next time I slide it in and out tho.
Anyway, that Fckng pink handlebar tape… Well it would've been easy as F*ck if I didn't add fake hoods, but I wanted them. The problem is : it's leather. Leather do NOT stretch, or very little, at least not enough. I gave up personally as you can see lol. I put some skin armor instead ! Why? It's good condom, protects my bike 🙂 I had to heat it up to make it more stretchy, some kind of foreplay if you will. And it worked great! Just not so good looking…
Interestingly I like the grip more than the natural (leather) one. Let's just hope those fake hoods are worth it.
You might think they're on a bit low, but it's actually the highest it can go. I learned it the hard way unfortunately (it cracked a bit I had to glue it back together but that's on me)
Thanks again u/mokumintipedalais I'll give you some feedback after test riding.
For the stem : I actually chose a smaller frame than my previous one. I'm 173cm and I'm right between 2 frame size so I can get away with it. 140mm is kinda long no? I got 120mm on my current bike and it's great. Smaller frame + longer stem for more control over a very aero wheel I'm going to get.
As for the light, well I need drivers to SEE me. (I had one too many accidents)
Message to hardcore fixie rider, yes I'd like to stay alive. Not only it is Illegal in my country (France) to have less than 2 braking system. It's also very dangerous when you're going a full speed with low visibility. Take care of yourselves, and wear your helmet. Thanks
Now guess the frame I chose, there's 2 clues (very easy)
Thanks a lot for reading
