This clip is from an episode of Underworlds with Mark Shaw, who talks to author and journalist Sanne De Boer, about her book ‘Mafiopoli: Living Among the ’Ndrangheta – Italy’s Most Powerful Crime Organisation’.

Sanne talks about the moment the ‘Ndrangheta caught her attention, the Duisburg massacre in 2007, when six ‘Ndrangheta members were killed outside a restaurant in Germany.

What caught my attention was an incident that
happened in Duisburg. it happened during my first summer in Calabria
which is was in it was in August 2007. What happened was that six men were shot in front
of a restaurant in the city centre of Duisburg. Actually, it was a restaurant that was on the
ground floor of a very big office building, the biggest office building of the city. And these
killings were were connected to a feud in Calabria in San Luca, which is a well-known village for
people who know a little bit about the ‘Ndrangheta because a lot of clans connected to these
villages are often in the news. So, what happened was in a way Germany woke up to the the reality
of the presence of the mafia in their country.
