I love the challenge of the big climbing events, and completed 5 sportives and a granfondo over the summer, including the Fred Whitton and La Marmotte – but for me these are special events to work towards, and what I’ve always enjoyed most is a 2-3 hour blast in the countryside – hitting some climbs, taking time to enjoy the views, and of course making room for a little coffee and cake stop. This for me is true luxury.
So today’s video describes what I would classify as a perfect ride for me – out with the irrepressible Lee Baxter, to open up the legs the day before we took on the Fred Whitton. Not too short, not too long, not too much climbing not too little, not too fast and not too slow – my personal Goldilocks ride!

[Music] today’s video passed things right back to their basic best thrills spills climbing and cake plenty of cake in the district of the lakes with amazing company and a goldilocks route replete with switchback panoramas and for me mama bear distance and elevation this kind of ride is my personal cycling nirvana blitan from the pretty side if we can see any of it here we come lady confidence at the beginning of the ride was maybe a little bit rocky because the physical stress of la mamos two weeks prior had caught up with me and i was still wondering if i actually had it in me to get around the 184 kilometers and four thousand meters in the very next stage as an aside the five thousand meters of climbing for mamat was all zoned to 200 to 210 watts but on a ride lasting over eight hours i do find that for me personally it creates a nutritional kind of stress on the body one that hit me like a bow wave about five days after completing it the baxter and i have warmed up the blood on her legs with a little spin up red band climbed enroute to the first of the valleys of the gods great langdale for our second climb of the day blitarn from the east official 100 climbs number 182 bliton yep 182 go figure sits between the valleys of great langdale and little langdon and we have to thank an ice age glacier and british engineering for its sensational switchbacks a formidable partnership indeed beautiful blee from the yeast affords us 1.2 kilometers of perfection at an average gradient of 10.3 whilst we dispatch this in an exhilarating 5 minutes 53 seconds the rain and the mist however denied us the ability to share with you some spectacular rear view vistas but fear not the weather gods were much kinder to us once again after that for a second blast up leave from the east how was that how well he emotional it was quite a way to open up the legs and alarms this morning good warm-up for tomorrow although red band wasn’t easy either no so a lot of climbing down so far right back in the rain pleton in the back nose to come yeah right here we go ready yep oh yeah i’ve been on the road is that yeah we’re good so what exactly is this rhinos pass and why is it so much the perfect climb well its name has evolved over the years in various forms of scandinavian dialect renhouse meaning stallion’s ridge because very fittingly from the nuanced perspective of the cyclist back in the 12th century the gradients were considered so steep that the horses needed to be well muscled in order to make it up and i think the vikings would have been super impressed with lee baxter’s leg muscles once again behold his seated low cadence power for ascending into the nest i reckon that’s in part down to the fact that he lives in these parts and another part down to the fact that when inside lee trains on the what bike pro with its metabolic stress-inducing air resistance in turn creating high muscular fatigue and all kinds of gains the game was up anyway i digress because ren house morphed into renos hill which in turn elegantly evolved into his current form rhinos still pronounced locally as renus according to wikipedia and wikipedia is never wrong right this area was once home to the neolithic ax making industry once a state-of-the-art technology in pride of the nation but like blockbusters and woolworths no longer trading on the london stock exchange nonetheless leaving a legacy of little caves which were in turn employed by the 19th century smuggler lanti slee to distill his moonshine whiskey before spiriting the illicit liquor across the country on these very roads so a rich history indeed befitting of such a fine climb and it doesn’t end there because alongside our new fangled tarmac road replete with potholes lies the remains of a roman road to take troops to hard knock thought so this is how we arrive at the 21st century with a segment in strava titled official 100 climbs number 85 rhinos parks with folk astride carbon and clad and lycra smashing their way up it’s 2.54 kilometers with average gradient 11 as is my preference lee also rides the gradients taking the opportunities to lay off the watts as the elevation eases off and back on the gas as the going gets harder it’s efficient and fast and it feels so so good i adore it oh that’s me lee’s holiday put him in good stead and he was setting an infernal pace we were going harder at rhinos than i’d envisaged but boy did it feel good only one challenge to focus on and that was measuring out the power to get up this climb and boost the confidence using the scenery and lee’s stoic profile as inspiration not to let off the power speaking earlier of a traditional the final kilometer of rhinos including the business end averages 16 gradient and because it comes after 1.4 kilometers at 10 and a half percent your energy is already depleted hence the need to pace things right in the first half the business end was very much taking its vo2 to the max ptolemy and zalada found out the same for lee but up up and out of the mist into the promised land of milk and honey feeling good to be alive at the summit it was most definitely time to stop and take in the fruits of our labour an ascent lasting 14 minutes and six seconds of undiluted perfection plus a side serving of elevated heart i do rate i find it quite difficult to worship lee apologizes quote unquote he finds it quite difficult to go slow yeah i can vouch for that and to come up with courts type of rhinos pass confidence ebbing up a little bit lee and i have both had a bit of time off the bike i had four days off what with the moving apartment and travel lee how long did you have off two weeks in spain yeah nice little holiday does fresh legs suit you lee no does fresh legs suit anybody put an answer in the comments below certainly i need a few kms in her legs in order to have a half decent ride anyway how are you feeling after rhinos there you set a blistering pace confidence is rising for tomorrow for sure yes quietly confident i like that man from the lake district is quietly confident the soft southern londoner is that something yeah he’s not quite as quietly confident but confidence is rising a little bit the panic is low currently i wouldn’t like to ride hard not at the back end of this there you go some of the views it’s beautiful isn’t it it’s very atmospheric now i’m personally not one for always having to have a perfect cycling loop sometimes it’s just good to retrace your steps and sample life from the opposite direction and this in turn gave us the opportunity too good not to take to have a second crack at blee from the easy on the eye east but the moisture gremlins once again did their best to spoil my rear view cinematography but we got some good shots and i’ll be back to capture this properly on a beautiful crisp morning this really is an exceptional 1200 meters and as we hit the switchbacks my thoughts were gradually turning towards the coffee and cake stop one of the simple cycling pleasures that makes you feel a million dollars i’d be grateful if you give the video a thumbs up and subscribe and if you haven’t hit the notification bell well please do because views on views hopefully deserves views on screen second time today you never know how you’re going to feel until you really start pushing on the pedals never a true word said that’s your quote for the day this is a nice climb isn’t it bleetan it’s beautiful it really is from both directions and the views are well my favorite in the late district without today i say the views from the other side but either seen them as we came up look at that moody sun is just trying to peek through dilly beloved here we are once again convening in lee’s favorite part of the lake district this the view down into which of the valleys on blitan little langdale little langdale yeah rain or shine as i said before the lake district is always epic now timely i think for tea cakes yes medals is tomorrow hopefully yes yes cake and medals tomorrow just just tea and cake today and all in out for just two and a half hours some of it pottery i do love to potter and accomplishing just 50 kilometers but a nourishing 1140 meters of vertical and for me this length and time some of it easy some of it is ideal for sure i do enjoy the challenge of the daddy bear imperial century climbing rides but sometimes i find that by about a minute i kind of have my feel so this mama bear distance is much more my usual cup of tea especially if there’s a decent cake and coffee emporium at the end as there was this day right so you’ve done potluck on the cakes potluck your choice for the wannabe climbers the spoils and unveiling oh my word look at this what have we got here that looks like a blueberry crumble a blueberry crumble yes oh my word and this one it’s all coming back to me and that is i can’t remember what that one it’s a cherry crumble i reckon all right they both look good they both look good decisions decisions decisions blueberry crumble okay good it’s good he’s happy with that trade all right and a decaffeinated flat white cheers yeah we’ve got some sort of coconut based sponge cake with what are those cherries are there cherries yeah cherries in there i reckon yeah that’s it moist moist good it’s good isn’t it yeah good all right so here’s mine people can see the full unveiling look there new beeps needed moist just the word and that is delicious yeah really good it’s this place called the gallery cafe art shop there we go with views and cake nice

Despite your vast cycling-related legacy left on video, today I'm staying with the golden statement: "Wikipedia is never wrong, right?" 🙂
What cycling is all about! Mates, climbs, views, cakes. Perfection! Great video Phill, and I'm always keen for a bit more Lee Baxter. The weather can't always be perfect (especially in the UK, and double especially in the UK high land areas!), but that doesn't have to spoil the fun at all.
There’s just something about the English countryside. It is incredible. Perfection.
Awesome ride and wicked gradients.well done bravo.always motivational to get me back on the bike after being ill for a week.thanks
For me, fresh legs equals jelly legs! Nice video, those climbs look brutal!
Brilliant.
Better you than me. Cakes looked good though 😉
Cycling and history bit is ok…. skip to 12:25 for the interesting bit ….. CAKE!!!! ( Nice work Guys)
👍🚴🏻
Nothing what a Needle & Cotton won’t sort out Phill 😉
Feel tired just watching those efforts 😂 Kudos 👍
lob in a michael caine impression and it could be “the trip” (food & views).
I always enjoy hearing a “well done” or other encouraging words as cyclists pass one another. Means a lot hearing riders issuing encouragement and sorely lacking in my neck of the woods. Again another legendary documentation of a great area to ride in!!!!
Stone the crows Phill…20% + uphill is really insane. How was the descent? What low gear are you using on the cassette, 34?
Good save on the cow grate! When I can feel my legs before a ride, it is often is a good sign!
Looking forward to your next instalment.
Hey, I was wondering what pressure you rode your bike under these wet conditions? Saw you ride out of the saddle and seemed possible w/o slipping. What tires you are riding?
I use to ride a lot steep climbs in the basque country and when it's wet I barely can get out of the saddle w/o slipping. And I tried all sorts of tires already.
I’m more impressed that you are wearing shorts and short sleeve jersey in that weather at this time of year. 😳😳
Awesome video Phill. Great riding, Great views, Great Langdale, other big hills, big cake, big lungs and big legs. Oh and time on the bike with mates. Does it get any better
Irrepressible chaps despite the weather…..just goes to show all you need is a good route and some company!! Nice……
2 days off bike is good for me, any longer definitely feels like beginning of losing fitness.
Lee "I find it quite difficult to go slow" Baxter x'D
No, I'm sorry! My mind is still stuck there, hearing that line over and over. That's all I have for this one 😛
Nah, fresh legs are a myth, no one felt good on fresh legs which is a shame but also a blessing because it keeps you on your toes when you're feeling a bit lazy, especially during these winter months, awesome vid in the lakes as always, mountains, coffee and cake what more could you ask for 👌
How are you only wearing short sleeve and shorts in that weather? Must’ve been freezing
Have not been following you for long but I have to say another fantastic video looking forward to your next one
Always better with cake, caffeine/coffee and kilometres in the legs. Been making my own cake, waffles and bread recently. All plant based of course.
Hey Phill, very entertaining as per normal l like to watch you suffer(sorry) before l head out on my rides… today's a MTB ride and with rain forecast l could of done a indoor ride but watching this l heading out for some mud instead.
Once again, another great video. Loving the history, big up the Romans and the ice age!
Cycling mountain goats and a history lesson = perfect 👌🏻
Great Ride, I did Wyrnose Pass & Blea Tarn in the opposite direction on this year's Fred Whitton Challenge🥵 Good choice of of Coffee ☕ stop in Grasmere, the cakes in there are delicious 🚴😁🚴♂️👍🚴♀️
Another fantastic video Phill, thanks for sharing, well done to you both.
Views and cakes 😍😍
I'm not sure what I'm salivating on more, the climb or the cake? (Or the Wilier)
Well done Phil. Very steep. Amazing how we all love watching you suffer 😂😂 👏👏
Lovely video Phillip. Lee Baxter plus the Lakes are my favourite videos. With your power profile you should aim for a sub 6.30 (including stops) at the Fred next May. Best regards Martin
Another great video, some impressive climbing 👍🏻 Do you work on climbing out of the saddle or is that just natural? The time you can stay out of the saddle on the steep stuff is impressive. Normally as soon as I get out of the saddle I sit back down again cos my legs hurt too much! 😂
Legendary to cycle in those conditions … you seem to be the perfect training partner for sure … Nothing stops you are all!
Seems like you heading to becoming a MTB rider soon ? Hmmm
Thanx for the awesome content and geography of the UK
Hi Phil, Any tips on recovering from lifting sessions? I’ve been trying to do tempo the day after lifting, but my legs always feel like bricks.
Congratulations Phil. You rose above the clouds :)) excellent images. You are very lucky and you're so strong, my friend. Greetings from Türkiye. Ride on mate. I continue to watch and follow you Phil. Good luck.
Never fail to impress with hour coverage, so informative 👏. Question though, spent 7 days in Hospital 🏥 with Covid. My leg 🦵 muscles have turned to mush. So NO BICYCLE rides well into New Year. Question sorry, any other instances were you've come across similar Cyclist with Covid. November 19 tested Positive. So some way yet. Sorry for tattling on 😂 just a real inspiration to see you push every ride. 🙏 God bless 🙌
I love your videos Phil. Could put my feet up all evening watching these. Keep up the good work sir. Chapeau indeed 👏
This film perfectly captures the loneliness and bleakness and the stunningly thrilling landscape of one of Britain's most beautiful districts. Am I envious that you got to pant and gasp your way up those hills? You betcha.
Fresh legs is a relative term. I ride daily but with two easier, recovery days I consider my legs fresh and ready for a hard effort. Otherwise, it's one recovery day. Any way you slice it, it's 3 hard efforts a week and 4 recovery rides, mainly to keep the fat off. Nice video. (And if it's your friend's first ride in two weeks, he's doing well because VO2max capacity would all but disappear in that time. In other words, he must be a much stronger rider than he displayed here). Cheers.
