Have you ever wondered why there’s a strange looking metal strip running along the side of this road? Don’t be too quick to think it’s just for decoration. In fact, it’s an invention that makes riding a bicycle uphill feel effortless. This device is called Sickleheis or the bicycle lift located on Brew Backan Street in the city of Tronheim, Norway. When you arrive, simply go to the small control station at the bottom of the slope. Then park your bike parallel to the metal rail running along the road. Keep one foot on the pedal. Place the other on the small foot plate that sticks out from the rail and press the start button. Instantly, the platform gently pushes your foot, moving you and your bike smoothly uphill at a speed of about 8 km per hour. The entire ride takes only about 1 minute to reach the top without any effort at all. A simple yet ingenious idea that turns the tiring task of climbing a hill into a fun and memorable experience for anyone visiting Norway.
