Day 245. 76km (91,993kms 8yrs)

Emese left for work before dawn but very generously allowed me to sleep in. After a coffee and some breakfast I locked up and hit the road into a cloudier, damper day.

The private road along the lake had been so pretty that unusually i didn’t mind retracing my pedal strokes through the tunnel of yellow trees. Men fished beside the lake as the drizzle began that would remain with me on and off all day.

On my final full day in Hungary I made my final stop at Tesco. I like it not just for its familiarity but for its free toilets and WiFi. I can also be sure it’s big enough to be legally obliged to have RePont recycling machines. With a recycling voucher for 400 forints (8 cans/bottles) and my remaining cash, I filled my panniers in readiness for crossing to Slovakia the following day. But I overlooked buying bread so spent the remainder of the day trying to gather enough cans and bottles to trade in for a loaf but there’s not nearly so much litter in this northern region! I fell short of the recycling required and only managed enough for a chocolate bar.

Behind the last town before the border I followed a track towards the hills, crossing a ford before continuing along a muddy path into the woods. The cave entrance indicated on the map turned out to be too small to camp in so I pitched up among the yellow leaves as the drizzle turned to rain. An animal groaned intermittently in the near distance.

Good morning. My host has already left for work before dawn. So, um I’m having a little coffee and then locking up behind me and then heading towards Slovakia, I think. Will I get there today? Probably not, but nearly. I normally don’t like to go back the same way I’ve come and I was ready to go the longer way around to avoid retracing my steps here, but it’s so lovely this private road that I’m more than happy to come back the exact same way. 12%. I very much doubt this is above 10%. gorgeous. I don’t know if it comes out on film, but these colors almost don’t look natural. Amazing. Last day in Hungary. Last visit to Tesco. Cash my last bag of rubbish in. Spend the last of my foreign cuz it’s euros tomorrow. Thank you. I was very confused at first. US flags, Hungarian camels, some cats in a cage, but there’s a circus in town. [Music] How’s life in Hungary? Not too cold for you, I hope. Okay, that’s all my forigns gone. Um, now I’m just going to get as close to the Slovakian border as I can to find a camp. Um, I probably should have brought some bread though, and I didn’t. So, I might see about picking up some more cans and bottles and see if I can’t trade that in for a loaf before the end of the day. This poster is all over Hungary and I don’t need to be able to speak Hungarian to see it’s an anti-Europe picture with Ursula Vandelion as the puppet master. Lot of anti-EU sentiment here including from uh Victor Orban. I wonder what is down here. But I don’t wonder enough to go looking. [Music] [Music] Oh, no. No. It’s 3:45 and I guess the village store closed at 3 and I’ve got 250 for worth of recycling that I’m still hoping to exchange for a loaf of bread. I did manage to trade my recycling vouchers in in the next village, but I only had enough for a chocolate bar, not a loaf of bread. Time to find a campsite. Oh, what? Oh, no. I just lost loads of time looking for water as well. I can’t get through there. What? Yay. Okay, this better be good now. That is indeed a cave entrance, but not a cave I will be camping in. But this forest will do nicely. The last of my favorite Hungarian smoked stringy cheese. Yum. Cheers to my last night in Hungary and tomorrow, Slovakia. New country day.

  1. What a beautiful and scenic ride with all the fall colours. Very similar to the trees here in British Columbia right now. Looking forward to seeing Slovakia. Until then, safe travels. 😊🚴🏼‍♀️
