hi I’m Sam I’m one of the train managers here at L and welcome to a day in my life my Home Depot is at London Kings Cross and I commute into work by the East Coast Mainline one of the perks of working for lenr is free residential travel with the company this means I can hop on a train to my base at Kings Cross and yes my shifts start and finish in London once I arrive at Kings Cross the first thing I do is check for any late notice case alterations via an app called RC documents and once I’m happy and up to date with any amendments I’ll book on for my shift with my company Mobile next I’ll head into the office to pick up my Revenue equipment for the day this includes a ticket machine and a body War camera each of these tools I use on board to manage ticketing irregularities and other passenger Services today’s head code is 1 Delta 23 this is the 1703 London Kings Cross to leads which is diagrammed as an inter city 225 service today before departure I do several checks to ensure everything is running smoothly on the inter city 225 we do have something called a Do Slip this is valid from when the train leaves its Home Depot and shows the Train’s preparation completed by Neville Hill maintenance team and then I’ll check the defect log book for anything to be wary of this is signed by both train managers and maintenance once I’m happy everything is in work working order I check the driving van trailer for some of the Emergency Equipment such as a working tail light wooden ladders for evacuations and a minimum of 16 cases of water for emergency use once the train is on its way our job is all about safety punctuality and excellent customer service I walk through the train checking tickets answering passenger questions and helping solve any issues such as finding seats handling delays or fixing onboard faults at each stop I safely dispatch the train ensuring a smooth on time departure I also check in regularly with the onboard crew ensuring everyone is doing okay when I arrive in leads I get a small break to recharge before we head back to London our train back is running as the 2045 leads to King’s cross this head code is 1 Alpha 52 it’ll be formed of a 10 car auma service that’s two five car units coupled together upon boarding I will check the fitness to run certificate this is valid for 47 hours and 50 minutes this lets us know the train is good to go then I’ll head to the train management system and set it up ready for our departure here I will load up the Train’s calling patterns seat reservations and checking the saloon status for any coach abnormalities such as Carriage temperature or power socket failures and then we will complete the same great passenger service back to London once

  1. Free travel on trsins commuting to work like this should a taxable benefit. It should be recorded on the P11D.

HMRC expects people to fund their own travel to work. It is therefore unfair if some people get it for free and others do not.

For the avoidance of doubt, I am not saying commuting on trains should be free.
I am saying, if it is not recorded on the P11D and taxed, it should be.

  2. Thank you for that insight. I love riding the train, Amtrak for me, and I've often wondered about the full extent of the jobs on a train.

  3. I've been doing this for 26 years. When you get a few years in you'll stop being like this. Oh and it's THREE not FREE. I'm only saying this because you're speaking every-single-word-correctly-and-slowly.

  4. Man…I wish I could be anywhere near as handsome to be accepted into the industry, too. And without the constructive exclusion from LUL (Why? Because having neurodiversity and being LGBT „Wasn't OK“ back then) – And the complete abandonment, exclusion from family and driving into poverty I suffered in direct consequence – I would be, too… 🏳‍🌈🚫🙅😢

  5. Can you ask LNER why their £4.50 bacon rolls only contain one pony rasher of bacon with no sauce and no butter.

    £4.50 yeah?

  6. 'Free residential travel'.. so only to get to work? If so, terrible that.
Avanti give free unlimited travel to you and your spouse (and any children). Northern also give similar perks.. travelling to work is free anyways if you have your uniform on, it's poor from LNER if residential travel is only for going to work and back.

    P.s I drive trains.

  7. Another very interesting video, there's more to these jobs than what they seem and it's good to see so much attention to safety.
