Hello Bike Touring experts!
I'm planning a bike tour next Summer, along the Canal des Deux Mers. I intend to fly from Geneva to Bordeaux on easyJet.
I'm not sure if I trust a soft bike bag, so I'm thinking about disassembling my bike into a cardboard box.
Now, I've read the official easyJet rules about NOT being allowed to pack anything other than the bicycle in the bikebox, but is this genuinely a strict rule?
"no other items can be carried in the bicycle box/bag (i.e. clothing)". Ref: https://www.easyjet.com/en/help/baggage/sports-equipment#
For me, this is a blatant policy to charge baggage fees, and to penalize cyclists who have a big pre-paid box and spare capacity for clothing.
As long as there are no prohibited items in the box, and it is under the weight limit, what could possibly be the reason, other than another easyJet money-making scheme?
As it is my first bike tour using a plane, I want it to be stress-free as possible.
Saying that, I don't want to pay significant baggage fees for a unnecessary holdall (containing my bike bags).
I know people have had successful experiences with packing clothing and bikebags into their box, and that this does vary with airline and airport security scrutiny. I should probably follow my instincts.
However, has anyone had any direct experience carrying a Bike Box with easyJet and/or from Geneva Airport?
Thanks in advance,
Chris
