Drivers are forever forgotten. If there’s less parking, will the council be making public transport better? This was the reaction of social media users to Glasgow’s expanded on street cycle storage spaces. Glasgow City Council strategic vision is to have cycling as one of people’s first choices of transport for everyday journeys. So, the council has recently installed 27 new secure cycle storage units to allow 162 new cycle bike spaces. Each unit holds six bikes and the council is aiming to have 120 units and 720 new spaces by the end of 2025. Since the cycle hoop scheme launch in 2021, there are now over 1,700 secure spaces across 300 locations. And the roll out is part of a 5-year plan to create 3,000 secure cycle storage spaces, particularly for those in tenment flats with limited storage options. Despite the controversy, the storage units have proved very popular and are at a 94% occupancy rate and 3,000 signed up residents. One person pointed out that while it may mean a loss of one car space, it will lead to six bicycle spaces. They added, “I’ve happily dished my car for a bike, saving a fortune, and it’s far more pleasant.” What do you think? Let me know your thoughts at safarago.org and follow Glasgow safargo for more.
