hello hello hello everybody hope you’re having a beautiful day today my name is Steve thank you so much for stopping by my Channel today I am going to be reacting to the 11 best things to do in Colechester England I am feeling amazing today I hope you are as well it’s just been a beautiful day today and uh Sun’s shining it feels sort of warm outside it’s not quite cold and it’s not quite hot it’s just one of those really nice temperatures and I’m just feeling awesome today but anyways guys I actually had this recommended to me by a subscriber I really don’t know anything at all about Colchester all I know now is where it’s located up at because I just briefly looked that up just a second ago and it is located kind of to the northeast of London it’s basically on the east coast of England but uh anyways guys like I said I don’t know anything about Colchester I know the name and I don’t know why I know the name of the city but for some reason soon as I saw saw someone recommend this to me I knew I had heard of this place before don’t have any clue why but uh guess we’re going to find out what is so awesome about Colchester so anyways guys don’t know what to expect here but let’s go Ahad and dive in and check out the 11 best things to do in Colchester England did you know that Colchester is known as the oldest recorded town in Britain history dating back over 2,000 years wow explore the remnants of Roman occupation and witness The Echoes of a bygone ER here are the best things to do in Colchester England wow so 2,000 years old is that accurate is Colchester seriously the oldest city in the entirety of the UK I just want to make sure I have my information correct here but uh that’s amazing guys every time I look into one of these old cities well what I’m saying old cities all the cities in England and the entirety of the UK are old compared to what we have here in the US here in the us if we see a City that’s 300 or maybe 400 years old that is considered a very old city but to put that in perspective when I look at the cities in the UK it’s just our cities over here are babies they’re basically brand new compared to what you guys are used to in the UK it’s just absolutely amazing the history and I’m sure a place like this probably has some really cool architecture and whatnot because of how old it is but uh anyways guys let’s go ahead and continue number 11 B gate Roman step history at Balan gate the largest surviving Roman Gateway surviving Roman Gateway this captivating Landmark offers a glimpse into the City and Architectural Brilliance walk good is it’s quite a ways away from here back in North Carolina where I’m from we have a very good zoo but uh she was too young at the time to really be able to enjoy it and to really kind of learn and experience really what she should experience in the zoo so definitely want to take her to a zoo so who knows if we don’t get to a zoo uh before we get over to the UK I hope I hope we will um but who knows maybe we’ll visit that Zoo but uh we did take her to a zoo that’s kind of local but it was just it was horrible it’s so run down it looks like a zoo that hasn’t been uh hasn’t had any upkeep since the 80s it was absolutely horrible I don’t know why that place is still open they definitely need to do something with that place but uh there’s also this place uh we’ve actually gone to that was uh what is it called I can’t remember what it’s called but uh basically you drive your car through this through all these fields and stuff and you have all these animals that come up to you and you feed them out of your hand and whatnot that was a cool experience but it’s kind of like a zoo but it’s not the exact same thing um but yeah anyways guys let’s continue so you will love culture like that to the point that it’s not as big of a deal probably for the average person you know they just drive past them and whatnot don’t really think about anything about them because we do that when we live somewhere with something we we just get used to our environment and get used to what we see every day but from someone that never sees castles ever never ever I’ve never come across I’ve never been to an actual real castle that was made hundreds of years ago and it’s just amazing it really is guys sorry for for rambling I just find things like this just it’s incredible it’s just this is so beautiful man it really is and Heritage wow step inside this to unlock a wealth of historical Treasures including the amazing mayor that’s Inc coest ped enjoy the cultural Journey as you click here for more things to do in England all right guys that was interesting oh my goodness guys I want to look at this I want to look at this uh did he say this is a town hall I believe that’s what he said dude look at the detail my goodness man this is such a beautiful place wow I don’t know how many of you guys out there love seeing places like this as much as I do I think part of it really is why I’m so fascinated with places like this I’m so in love with places like this is because we can we can see some there’s some nice buildings we got some older buildings here you know I can I can go to my hometown and see a number of buildings from like the 1700s and whatnot so you know I can see some Victorian um era architecture and stuff like that but you guys have so much more of that and then beyond and I think it seems like almost every city within the UK has access to just not just the Victorian era but well before that as well but you just have access to all this amazing architecture and just these historical sites and stuff and and here it’s just a lot harder to come across that stuff it exists to a certain extent not not like the ancient Roman structures and whatnot and the ancient castles but we have some you know 300y old buildings and whatnot and they’re nice and and it’s cool but nothing like what you guys have there and I I look forward to exploring stuff like this I never knew how in love I was I don’t know if that’s a way to express that I never knew how much I loved these like architecture in general it wasn’t something that I ever really quite understood about myself you know I knew I I like looking at nice buildings and stuff like that and I used to do landscaping and I and I and I love a nice garden and and beautiful plants and and just scenery and and I love history and stuff to a certain extent I’ve always known this but to the level I do now it’s just so different for me how much I realize I love this stuff and I can’t wait to explore some of what you have to offer over in the UK when it comes to the architecture design the history and the gardens and all that all that good stuff but uh anyways guys coester looks like a really cute City I I don’t know it doesn’t look huge I don’t know it looks like it looks like a looks like a city maybe I don’t where is that at based off of this it looks like what I would imagine this is probably a mediumsized city of 50,000 people I’m guessing I I need to look that up but uh looks like a nice place to go for a visit if you especially if you love Roman history and you’d like to see some pretty cool old Roman structures and things like that and obviously stuff like this as well looks like it has quite a few museums and some nice outdoor area and things like that but uh just look like a quaint little I don’t know is this a Seaside Town considering that it was what was it Mercy Mercy Island um I think it’s maybe a Seaside to I know it’s to the I know it’s on the east side of England but I didn’t really see if it was on the exact on like on the coast or a little bit Inland but uh either way I don’t think you’re very I mean c says Mercy Island I’m guessing you’re 1. I used to live in Colchester for about ten years. Where I lived, on the northern side of the town, you could hardly put a fork into the soil without turning up Roman pottery. On my keyring, I still have a bronze Roman lucky charm I found. We do take our history for granted, because, well, it's always been there. I enjoy all history, and have been to the Alamo, Valley Forge, Gettysburg, USS Midway in San Diego, and the Little Bighorn battlefield, in the US, most of the major European battlegrounds from WW1 and WW2, and Isandlwana and Rourke's Drift in South Africa.

  2. From my bedroom right now I can see jumbo and hear the Colchester town halls bells… sometimes take it for granted how much history we have here..the town could be improved but if you like history then it’s a great place to go

  3. There's a church in Cambridge (St Bene't's) that has been on that spot for over 1000 years (they just got done celebrating 1020 – 2020), some of the surrounding buildings like King's College date back to Henry VIII, and The Eagle Pub next door is famous for two things, 1. Where Crick & Watson announced DNA was a double helix, 2. During WW2 the airman scratched their names in the ceiling.

Of the pre-Norman invasion era (Harold arrow in the eye- that one!) there's a few Saxon relics that have survived – the most notable are the masks and boats at Sutton Hoo.

Colchester has a very long history which is part of that more ancient realm.

  4. I was born n raised here n still live here the only gd thing about this place is leaving lol it’s nothing but restaurants cafes n hairdressers n few pubs

  5. The town hall is very striking.
I recently attended a wedding there and it is very breathtaking in person.
Winding marble staircase, old paintings gold and silver artefacts glass cases.
It’s very ornate and you can’t help but look all around you.

  6. If anyone is visiting Colchester for the first time and enjoys history, they should also go to Layer Marney Tower. It’s not far from the zoo, and it’s a stunning building, in lovely grounds.

  7. Colchester was the first place the Roman's captured back in August AD 43 (almost 2000 years ago – wow!). It was populated by the Catuvellauni tribe back then, but the Romans made it a base and home very quickly, before it went on to capture the hill forts in Dorset next, and subsequently most of the UK. Those Pesky Romans… but, I think we all probably have a bit of Roman blood in us somewhere down the line because they were here for around 400 years 🙂

  8. In Colchester we have legends of an extensive network of underground tunnels that link the castle to the town hall and all under the ancient town centre. Experts say although there's quite a few medieval cellars, including one massive cellar that was owned by a wine merchants and a drainage tunnel under the castle, there's no evidence of a tunnel network. But there's still stories about them including someone who claimed there was a tunnel from the town hall to a property on North Hill that was used as a shelter during the second world war.

There's also a place in Colchester called "The Old Siege House" that was fought over in the Civil War in 1648. It still has the holes from the musket balls in the building to this day. Google "colchester old siege house bullet holes" and there should be plenty of pictures of it.

  9. I have lived on mersea island for the last 18 years its lovely

A couple things. The video didn't mention about the island it's its unique and diverse wildlife. There's some species of birds and small animals that you won't see off of the island

Also, the fact that twice a day, it gets cut off by the tide, so the only way on and off the island is via boat

  10. Observations from a local.

They undersold the zoo. You can be anywhere in the country and say "I'm from colchester" and the only reason they will have heard of it is because of the zoo. It's the best in the country.

They also visited castle park at the worst time of year, in the summer it really is lovely and I think we all take it for granted.

Mersea island is where everyone from colchester goes on a sunny evening for fish and chips. We have many nice small towns and villages surrounding Colchester. Wivenhoe and Dedham being the best in my opinion.

The town centre by current standards is actually very nice. Locals will read this and instantly disagree, however, if you visit the town centres of other nearby towns and cities, ipswich being a very good example, Colchester is not seing a rapid decline, shops are generally filled and its nearly always busy. Some big retailers have moved to out of town commercial parks, but this is the same all over the country.

St Botolphs is very unfortunate, it's located at the bottom of Queen street, which is known locally as kebab alley, one road the town would rather forget about. There is also a car park right next the the ruins. They are howver, very pretty and often overlooked.

Also as I haven't seen many other people mention it, that giant red tower you can see from the town hall is a water tower we call "Jumbo". It's a local land mark and from my side of town "north" you can see it from most high points. It has been bought and sold alot over the years with many plans for redevelopment, but these always fall through, for now it just watches over the town. I hope they do something with it soon.

  11. I've lived in Colchester for 25 years now and I have a great fact about Colchester for you: in the year AD 42, the Roman Emperor, Claudius went to England to drive out the Iceni Warrior Queen, Boudicca from the Roman capital of England, (originally called Camolodunum – now Colchester) with his army which included elephants! They landed in Harwich about 20 miles away and marched in and stormed the town. Just imagine what the locals thought seeing elephants for the first time, having not even known their existence in many cases.
Colchester has so much architectural variety, including Roman, Norman, Tudor, Georgian, Victorian, and Art Deco from the 20s.

  12. You like a good beer? Come to Colchester! Weve got pubs within spitting distance of each other!
The town centre used to be a thriving place with a huge market and shops for virtually anything you require, but due to home delivery companies, this sadly is no more. I used to be a market trader, but due to lack of footfall, myself and many other traders had to cease trading. Sad.
    Mersea is pronounced Mer-zee btw!!!

  13. I went to school in Colchester. We were lucky enough to do local trips that included visiting an archaeological dig looking at Roman remains. I know live up the road close to Cressing Temple – linked to the Knights Templars. Very blessed to live in the UK with all its history

  14. i live chelmsford city not far from colchester… chelmsford as a settlement has been around since the neolithic period, chelmer valley dates back to 2,500 BC. it was a roman town from the first to the fifth centuries AD. it was a saxon settlement when chelmsford got its name.

  15. I was born and raised here, it has a lot of history and has recently been declared a city. I believe it was one of the last things the Wueej signed off before she died

  16. Under the castle are the Vaults of the Roman Temple, which you can visit. In these vaults the people of Roman Colchester sheltered when Boudicca came to the town and destroyed it. They didn't survive. At St Mary's at the walls church, now an arts centre, you can see a church with a modern brick top of the tower. This was damaged during the civil war and local legend has it that there was a one eyed gunner called Tom who fired a cannon called "Humpty Dumpty". The cannon fell from the tower due to artillery fire and inspired the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall". The song "Twinkle, twinkle little star" was also written in the town. On the outskirts of Colchester is the Gosbecks archaeological park. Its a site that has a roman temple and roman theatre. They are re-buried but you can walk round the park. There is also St Johns Abbey gate. This is all that is left of the Abbey and there is a cannonball mark on the inside roof from the English Civil war when Colchester was held by Royalists and there was a siege by the Parliamentarians. If you go down East hill and cross the river that runs through the City you will find the "Old Siege House", you can see the bullet holes from the muskets that were fired by the Royalists at the building. They are ringed with red circle's. I love my place of birth but its been ruined with ant car policies and destroying lovely buildings like the cups hotel and replaced with 1960's concrete monstrosities. There is so much more to see such as Brightlingsea, a Cinque Port with old Thames barges and smacks. There is so much to see but I think we are so used to our heritage that we forget its important to preserve, value and shout about it. Fabulous place for a visit but I wont go in it anymore, I live ten minutes outside but the town of my youth has been ruined by modern planning decisions and costly car parks, if you can find one, that is.. The shopping experience is awful. If you want your hair done, nails filed or a bar its ideal, but food shopping or a decent department store then no. We shop in Clacton and occasionally Norwich 60 miles away instead. Due to various factors the shopping heart of Colchester has moved westerly about 3 miles out of the City, where you can park.

  17. I grew up in stanway not far from Colchester zoo and when we was kids we use to battle the kids form the next school over to have control over the pre roman fortifications to ride our bikes on

  18. I was also born in Colchester in the old maternity home on Lexden Road, Colchester, and grew up on Shrub End Estate. I now live in Birmingham near some of my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but every so often I have to take a look at one of the walks around Colchester on u-tube for old times' sake.

  19. Colchester is older than 2000 years. It was the first capital city of England. The king of Essex, king colunden was the first king of the Britons. The Romans invaded and took over but when the king of the Iceni died the Romans tried to take over thier tribal land and they whipped the queen and raped her 2 daughters. A big mistake. Queen boudica, Queen of the Iceni then gathered her tribe and destroyed Colchester and every roman fort and soldier but she was finally beaten. After this the roman emperor seriously considered leaving as the Britons were too agressive to be ruled.

  20. People that were actually born here like me I was born in 1960 we don’t call this a city it’s always been a town and always will be it was the Queen that gave us the city status about a year before she passed away thanks for that Elizabeth
