Northern lights have always pulled humans to this wonderland and we are no exceptions. For the soul purpose of witnessing the Northern lights and leaving less to the luck factor, we decided to spent almost a week in Rovaniemi. The timing was perfect with the solar activity cycle at its peak and dark nights. Added to that it is no better time than Christmas to be in Rovaniemi, Santa Claus’s own city. In this video and also the parts to come we will show the wonderland we saw through our eyes.
In this part we share what we have experienced in the Rovaniemi city and the Northern we have seen in the first 2 days.
After almost a year of planning and preparation, finally we landed on our dreamland Roani. On our way from the airport to our place of stay in the city, taxi driver informed us that it was snowing heavily over the previous days and Roani welcomed us wearing the white snow gown. Our apartment was conveniently located in the city center. It was also at a walking distance from Arcticum, which is a location ideal for northern light hunting. While exploring the surroundings on the day of arrival, I randomly checked the Aurora Reach app to see the latest Aurora forecast and was overwhelmed to see a good probability that night. After a long wait, our dream came true. For capturing video, a professional camera with good optical zoom is required. But photos came good in the mobile camera. A week long trip was planned in Roani just to increase the probability of witnessing the northern light. But we were extremely lucky enough to witness it on the very first day. We started off the second day with a stroll around the city. Snow everywhere and lights are still glowing. A perfect Christmas vibe. It was freezing – 11°C at local time 10:30 We came across the city office of the Santa Claus and decided to meet him. We had a photo together and got autographed by Santa Claus. Of course, not for free. We went to the snow globe park in the city and spent the rest of the day. There were lot of activities for kids and was worth every penny. Our little ones braved the cold weather to try ice skating and snowmobile. The park looked beautiful glowing in the lights. Roanium is never complete without reindeers and we bought one antler to take back home. Finally, a memorable day was complimented with some delicious food. After the dinner, we headed towards our favorite site behind the articum for northern light hunting. We were lucky on the second day as well to see the northern light.
