Through Europe at 15 km/h 41st day of travel Monday, June 25, 2018 On the way on the Eurovelo 6 cycle path France That was one night! The never-ending traffic noise woke me up every few hours. Two hours later. I’m stranded in a huge supermarket. The shopping list includes storage media to back up photos and videos, alcohol for my cooking set and food. I would also be very happy about a delicious breakfast. Will I find anything under the miserably long shelves before lunchtime? From Besançon-Chalezeule to Deluz In front of the supermarket I spoke on the phone to the deputy mayor of Leobersdorf, who is also the owner of the local radio station “Radio Sol”. I tell the audience about my arduous journey because of the rail strikes and about the first 1,268 kilometers that I cycled from the Atlantic to here. Further topics include an exact location and an overview of the donations received for Rainbow Valley . And I especially highlight a young Turkish couple who donated and taught me how to properly make coffee the Turkish way. Oh! Isn’t that my bike? So, if I didn’t know that I was doing this right now, I would stop drinking beer immediately! Let’s see where it takes the owners. And where did you start? Uh! You come from Nantes! I drove through this city on the Loire a month ago! How long have you been traveling for? Three weeks! It was nice to meet you. Have a nice trip! All the best! Somehow I like my French compatriots. They are polite, charming and incredibly patriotic at the same time. Hey! Do you see the train? We could travel on comfortably! The headwind is driving me crazy! I also have the feeling that the bike path climbs slightly. Your assumption is completely correct. The path continues to climb. From Deluz to Laissey The Doubs and the Canal du Rhône au Rhin (Rhine Canal) Here is a wonderful place, right on the banks of the Doubs. I would like to give myself a longer break. Laissey am Doubs Should I stay here? No. Better not. It’s only 2:00 p.m. And I’m happy that I was able to spend 45 minutes here. From Laissey to Douvot When I spoke to Radio Sol on the phone, the station wanted to know how my little one was doing. I made no secret of it and told him that a leather saddle and deer tallow cream ensure comfortable seat development. And that I just had a breakdown and have already fallen twice. Hey! These are the two cyclists from France that I met two hours ago at a rest stop between Besançon-Chalezeule and Deluz. Where did they overtake me? Are you traveling alone? He’s never alone! On some sections of the route there are a few like-minded people who accompany me for a few kilometers. But basically I drive through Europe alone. Thank you! Have a nice trip! When I think about the fact that I started smoking cigarettes at the age of 15, I now ask myself what motivated me to do so. After all, this vice has accompanied me for over 24 years. As a teenager, I felt so strong, so male. From Douvot to Baume-les-Dames Some things on the body gradually changed in slow motion . The first clue came from a short sprint to the train station, where my train was already waiting. Afterwards it took me what felt like half an hour to catch my breath again. And from then on it dawned! I absolutely have to stop! As quickly as possible! At first I tried to compensate for the loss of nicotine with sweets. That wasn’t a good idea, said the scales. The next attempt culminated in sports. But that failed too, because as soon as I was in company and drank alcohol and coffee, I puffed again. That’s when I realized that addictive behavior is very much tied to habits. And then I changed it for a long time. Five weeks had passed when I stood at the train station in Baume-les-Dames on May 20th in blazing sunshine . I waited hopefully for the train. During the journey from Vienna to the Atlantic, a rail strike forced me to travel from Mulhouse to here by bike instead of taking the train. That was 110 kilometers! It’s always exciting to watch how the ships maneuver through these narrow locks. And here comes the next thing! Step on the gas! Otherwise you might end up with a bale of straw on your head! That was close! I always forget the trailer! From Baume-les-Dames to Clerval Over there are the rock faces where I watched people climbing during the journey. That was five weeks ago. Oh how nice! Finally a small mountain rating. This supposedly promotes blood circulation. The climb in the last three kilometers was strenuous. Now I’m in Roche-les-Clerval. 43.6 kilometers are behind me today. Finally! It’s going downhill! And this time it doesn’t affect my fitness, but rather the bike path! Stop! I have to turn left! Gerhard! This is the opportunity! You could comfortably continue your journey with your bike and trailer on the loading area ! Oh! A pharmacy. Since I’m still in poor health, I’m trying to get medication here. From Clerval to L’Isle-sur-le-Doubs Well, what is it? Are you running out of breath? This beautiful, idyllic place, where the water of the Doubs branch returns to its source, makes me think about whether I should build a place to sleep here. But the empty batteries and the small amount of food in the trailer bag encourage me to keep driving. It’s 6:30 p.m. I’m in L’Isle-sur-le Doubs! What a feeling! Because now I just need to find the campsite. That shouldn’t be too difficult. Because it is right on the river. I’m curious to see if I’ll meet the patriotic French woman at the reception. After all, we met five weeks ago. Because of the rail strike in France, I traveled by bike for a few days during the journey. At that time, she hired a volunteer interpreter to tell me that I should learn French. Does she still know me? I’m heading this way. I’m camping here today. The good man speaks German and says that he is going to Marseille. Aren’t you staying here at the campsite tonight? No. I camp wild. I’ve already done that too. But today I need electricity. Good day! Here I am again! Do you remember? One night, one person, one tent! I was here four weeks ago! Don’t speak English? No German? She hasn’t lost any of her patriotic charm since I asked her to learn French five weeks ago. Back then we had a woman or a man as an interpreter. Electricity? Yes Internet? The passport? Yes! I’ve been there before! four weeks ago! After the cheerful conversation with the nice receptionist, I discover a like-minded person. And I remember when I met Hermann from Freiburg almost 5 weeks ago, here at the campsite . Is he already home? The tent is ready for occupancy at 7:30 p.m.
