Most people think about bringing a bike on a train, whether it’s for cing or just for fun. Is it a hassle? Some don’t even realize it’s possible. But on our experience on British Rail was full of surprises. So come with us at Jack’s Travels as we test what it’s really like taking a bike on Northern Rail. Trust me, you’ll be shocked at what we discovered. And along the way, we share some absolutely stunning views you don’t want to miss. All righty, let’s jump straight in. [Music] We start our journey on the bike the night before. Um, it’s a bit stranger than when you normally book a train journey, but like always, we’re going to start on train line. Um, so you want to start by entering your city which you’re starting from. So I’m going to work today. So we’re going to start in Hull and then we’re going to go to Bruff. So we’re searching Bruff. Yep. Nice and easy. I’m sure you’ll all be used to this. The booking process is all the same. We’re going the day day after 15th and returning the 15th. Uh, need to put the departure time in. Right. It’s not the 15th, it’s the 16th. Uh foolproof he says uh leaving at I’m leaving at 7:30 and I’m returning at uh around 1,600 going as a child. So you can’t actually put um the option for your bike in yet. So you have to go and find the ticket and find the train. So then you go to the booking process and then the uh 1643 or something like we’ll find the train what best for me for these this is this train then you go to continue anytime and you need to continue even further then you need to reserve a bike space. So what that means is uh you need to reser travel peak times can get a little bit crowded. Be careful when traveling with your bike. So you reserve for bite space. Um so we’re traveling with Northern on the way there and on the way back it’s with Transpan Express. So on the way there, which is a journey we’re on today, uh we’ll be going with Northern. You don’t actually need to reserve that bike space. Um when traveling with Northern, it’s just good to have it because there might be a lot of people who bring a bike. But well, let’s see. Uh I’ll see you in the morning. But first, who am I? I’m Jack, a traveler with a love for the journey as much as a destination. For over a year, I’ve been sharing moments that stay with you long after the trip is over. From the gentle roll of the ocean on a cruise to the quiet magic of a sunrise flight and the timeless romance of a train winding through spectacular landscapes, I’m here to capture it all. It’s about more than just travel. It’s about stories, experiences, and the joy of discovering something new every time you step aboard, take off, or set out on the rails. So whether your heart is at sea, in the sky, or somewhere in between, we welcome you on board. Now you know me, let’s get back to the adventure. [Music] Hello and a very good morning to you. The time is 7:10 a.m. So, we’ve got a good um time to get to the station. Uh it takes me 15 minutes to bike to whole train station today. So, let’s crack on. Uh I’ll see you at Whole Train Station. [Music] After biking for 10 minutes in what can only be described as typical British weather, we are nearing W starting point of whole Paragan interchange. Whilst the journey to the train might not be going as planned in this miserable weather, hopefully the train journey goes a bit better. [Music] Okay, we’ve just arrived at Paragan Interchange. Now, let’s get through the ticket barriers, which shouldn’t be that hard um with the bike, but it’s if it’s busy, uh a lot of people block your way and you can kind of tell people to get out the way. Let’s see how busy it’s going to be. For reference, this is my bike. It is quite a large bike with quite a wide handlebars. So, please bear that in mind. [Music] I found my train on the depart board. Our train is leaving from platform one. So, let’s go and find the platform. [Music] [Music] With not that long to spare, I finally found the train. Right, it’s time to board. Let’s see how easy this boarding process is. Like, [Music] so through the door bike fits very well. And we need to get this bike onto there. So, what I usually do is I kind of bring it in, cast it around, and then you have to bring it into here. So, it’s quite hard. Let’s see if it fits. So, my bike’s in. I don’t know if this is how you officially like to store it, but it’s nice and secure. I hope it is. Anyway, it’s a bit narrow for two bikes. If we both had our bikes in the same direction, my handlebars wouldn’t fit. I think they are meant to go up there, but they’re just too bikes are too heavy to clunk onto there. Um, upright there, which is a bit of a design flaw. Uh, I will give it that the doors nice wide so it could fit through. Right, let’s find our seat. Here is our seat today. Whilst some people say these seats aren’t comfortable, I think for my simple 12-minute journey, these do the job perfectly. I barely have chance to sit down and experience a seat before we shortly depart. Ready for our quick 12minute journey today. [Music] One thing to know about this journey is that bringing a bike does not cost extra. It is included in your standard fair. [Music] As we quickly leave Hull, we are delighted to be able to see this gorgeous view of the River Humber. If you’d like a full review of the Raw Northern Rail Experience, click the link in the top right corner. that will show you this journey and other journeys on Northern in a far more detail. Wow, this journey truly is fast. And it’s almost time to disembark the train. You have to get to the door well before your train actually arrives into the station as you’ve got to get this bike ready lined up at the door or it will close in your face like it has done before. Not like I’m speaking from experience or anything. Um, yeah. So, make sure your bike’s ready at the door. Right, I better do it. [Music] I finally disembarked the train, which means only one thing. It’s conclusion time. What did I think about bringing a bike on Northern Rail? Well, if you have a small bike, I think it’s easy. It doesn’t cost extra, and it could make your commute to work or just travel or pleasure a lot easier. However, if you have a larger bike, you may want to consider the hassle of bringing it on board. However, overall, I would 100% recommend. Thank you for joining me on today’s journey. I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I did bring it to you. Very insightful
They desperately need newer and nicer trains. I think that's half the problem.
I live in Inverness, with trans being very few and far between, only 4 trains on Far North Line, absolutely essential to book your bike on a train as you could have a 3 or 4 hour wait until the next train, plus trains an get extremely busy at times. ScotRail good as they have large symbols and colours around the door which makes it easy to find which door to use with your bike.
I've made that journey many times, it's great to see it from a different perspective. Happy travels!
