Day 229. 64km (91,705kms 8yrs)

My hosts left early for work so I gulped down a much appreciated breakfast of tea, homemade bread, salami and eggs, and was on my way at 08:30. At this time it was a rather chilly 10C; quite a shock to my system. I wondered about digging my gloves out of the bottom of my clothes pannier..

But after a final stop at the lake, the climb up was enough to warm me until the sun rose a little higher in the sky. I was delighted to find bike paths took me all the way from lake Balaton to Székésfehérvár. This town hadn’t appeared in my (principally Lonely Planet) research on Hungary so it was a nice surprise to find colourful Baroque buildings lining pedestrian squares, and the ruins of a 1000 year old basilica. In the town’s Tesco prompts in English at the self checkout made me smile nostalgically (“unexpected item in bagging area”).

I was heading now towards Lake Velence to a wild camp mentioned in IOverlander. The bike paths continued but were now of brick and kept alternating sides over the road, which made it a bit frustrating, but still nicer than riding on the road. Turning into the forest I interrupted a large hare grazing beside the path before reaching the very lovely lakeside beach. There were several cars about but nothing that looked like a camper so I reluctantly continued on a little to hide in the forest. Had there been two of us I suppose we would’ve camped in the more scenic location..

Instead, I found a turning into the narrow copse beside the water and had camp set up with a good 45 minutes of daylight with which to enjoy dinner.

That was such a lovely stay, but it was a bit of a rush this morning because some people have jobs to go to. So, I don’t really know where I’m going. I need to um I’ll drop down to the lake one last time and make a plan. Um it’s only about 100 110 km to Budapest now. Um but I don’t need to be there for two days. So I can take it a bit easier now. Oh, I guess I’m on a Euro fellow route I didn’t know about. Oh my gosh, it’s cold today. Like 10° cold. I’m almost thinking about getting out my gloves and putting another layer on. Two days ago, I was complaining that I was a little bit too warm in my jacket and a little bit cold without it. Autumn is here. Thatched pub. Love a thatched pub. See it. Nothing like a little climb to get the blood pumping, warm you up. All these purpose-built bike paths are a lovely surprise. price today. I wasn’t expecting any of this. [Music] What with all paid toilets here? Even mackers you have to pay. Please scan your com card. Select payment type. Unexpected item is back again. this town, which I can’t pronounce cuz it’s all sed for like 14 letters. Uh, it didn’t come up in my research, but what a nice surprise. Lovely bike lanes this morning, but now it’s these brick ones and it just keeps switching over the main road here. That’s better. They’ve chopped down a wajger of forest for us. I saw you. See you. This kite surfing beach was mentioned in I Overlander as a great wild camp, but I’m not seeing any motor homes or camper vans, and I don’t fancy it on my own. It’s lovely though. Here’s the spot then. That road is a dead end road. It only services the lake. This is a path on the map, but it’s blocked at that end, so nobody’s coming through. I wish I had the bravery to camp on that beach, but I don’t. So, I’m camping here. Things have quietened down at the lake. There’s still about 45 minutes of daylight left for me to enjoy my dinner, which is leftover malbeck. And imagine how happy I am that this random box of cheese that I grabbed contained this big chunk of blue cheese. Stoked. Cheers to that.
