Experience a peaceful winter road trip through one of the most beautiful valleys in the French Alps — the Vallée de la Clarée. This silent drive under falling snow takes you from Val-des-Prés (near Briançon) up to Névache, following a scenic mountain road at an altitude of around 1,400–1,600 m (4,600–5,250 ft). With the temperature around –2 °C (28 °F), the snow gently covers the road, creating a quiet and immersive winter atmosphere. The Vallée de la Clarée is a hidden gem in the Hautes-Alpes region of southeastern France, near the Italian border and the town of Briançon. Stretching for about 20 kilometers, the valley is known for its crystal-clear river, traditional stone villages, and unspoiled Alpine landscapes. Because of its exceptional natural beauty, it has been protected since 1992 under a strict environmental law no large ski resorts or heavy development are allowed here. In summer, the area is popular for hiking and cycling, while in winter it transforms into a snow-covered paradise for cross-country skiing and peaceful drives like this one. Historically, this area has long been a frontier zone between France and the Duchy of Savoy (later Italy). Old military forts and border posts still overlook the valley reminders of a time when these mountain passes were strategic routes through the Alps. Even today, the nearby Col de l’Échelle – the road on the right now closed due to snow- connects France to Italy and offers stunning views of both sides of the border. We have now arrived at Nevache, the last inhabited village in the valley. On the canal you will find a walking tour of the beautiful village. Thank you so much for showing me this magical place.
Most likely I will never have the opportunity to travel to this place or so many others.
You make an old man in Tennessee quite happy.

  3. Hello! Thank you for sharing this amazing video; the views are breathtaking. I have a quick question: did you have snow chains on your tires? I'll be driving in this area this December, and I've never encountered snow before, so I hope I can manage it!
