Wrexham AFC Kop and stadium News
In this episode, we go behind the scenes at the Wrexham Racecourse ground to see how the unsung heroes of Wrexham AFC’s new Kop stand — the excavation and groundwork teams — are transforming raw earth into the solid foundation of the club’s future.

From soil testing and site grading to the deep trench work that will carry the new five-thousand-five-hundred-seat stand (with future expansion to seven-thousand-five-hundred), McLaren Construction’s precision on site is nothing short of remarkable.

We look at how contractors prepare the ground for drainage, utilities, and services, ensuring that every layer of soil, pipe, and conduit meets engineering standards and safety regulations. This stage may not grab headlines like Ryan Reynolds or Rob McElhenney’s star power — but without it, the dream of a modern Kop stand simply couldn’t exist.

Join us as we capture the story beneath the surface: the grading, the trenching, and the teamwork that will anchor Wrexham AFC’s most ambitious project yet.

Quietest day in a while at the cop site, but I was still able to get some footage. The excavating and grading is continuing, and the digger has moved on to a different patch of land. These diggers are essential. Behind every beam, every concrete pour, and every rising structure at the Stockyas, there’s a crew whose work rarely makes the headlines, but without whom nothing stands. They are the excavation contractors. They’re the first to arrive, the last to leave, and the ones who turn raw, uneven ground into the perfect canvas for construction. Their opening act is sight preparation. The quiet, methodical process of clearing debris, assessing the soil, and ensuring the ground beneath the new cop stand is stable and ready. Before a single brick is laid, they’ve already shaped the future, identifying soft spots, compacting weak soil, and making sure the site can bear the immense weight of steel and concrete soon to follow. Then comes the technical ballet of excavation. Trenches are cut to exact depth and line, matching engineering drawings down to the centimeter. Each one must meet building regulations ensuring the cop’s foundations are solid, balanced, and safe. Along the way, they lay in the arteries of the stadium sewer lines, electrical conduits, and service routes that will feed life into the new stand. But their precision doesn’t stop there. Through grading, they sculpt the land itself, shaping contours that manage water flow, prevent pooling, and keep the structure dry and secure through every downpour. Drainage isn’t glamorous, but it’s the difference between a lasting legacy and a costly repair. Communication is another unseen skill. These teams work in lock step with McLaren Construction’s planners, surveyors, and engineers, ensuring every movement on site supports the next phase. Heat. [Music] Heat. 1. Love the taking your excavator for a walk!
Once the groundwork is complete, the project should pick up pace nicely.
Greetings from British Columbia on Thanksgiving in Canada.

  2. You know that all this groundwork takes time and must be 100% before that Application is signed off.
And you also know that winter will be hear soon so you can still have more delays on this project.

  3. Hi, how about a "time" lapse from a while back to now. You decide what you have to stitch together from a similar vantage point. Lots of work, but might be cool… Keep going! The Red Dragons will prevail.

  4. The area where they took samples for testing won't be excavated until either the allclear has been given or they hire a specialist company for removal of the contaminated soil without putting the other site workers and passing pedestrians at risk.

  5. Really enjoyed those digger walking animations! 😆Yeah failure to properly prepare the site can lead to some costly issues and delays later in the construction project! 👍

  6. I hope you have been taking still photos from just across the rail tracks. It would be nice at the end of this to have a compilation video of watching the TempKop stand being removed, and the new Kop rising.

  7. Hi Tom, well done again mate. Great coverage. Just one question.. Do you have a completed version of the whole stadium in your minds eye? It would be interesting to know your thoughts.
Ince again though, thanks again, brilliant production.😀👍⚽🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇨🇮⚽👍😀

  8. Thanks Tom!

I know it's hard to make watching grass grow interesting, yet somehow you do it. As important as the sight work is, the digger animation was better 😂

    Until tomorrow 😊
    Have a great day Tom

  9. Give it one week Tom, and we will start to see some major action. With the given time scale, and the fact we are at the point of brown earth, we'll see the utilities going in soon. Expect piling to commence very soon for these first foundations. This is a hybrid build and a mix of reinforced concrete and steel. The concrete pads and piles are going to be 7.6 metres apart to take the load of weight for the ascending floors. It won't be long until we see the first piles being excavated. Theres two stairwells going in which also have lifts, and these are one of the first major builds that you will see. When those are completed, the steel framework will rise so quickly, you'll have to be there every day to keep up Tom. I can't wait for this stand to rise!

  10. Hardly anything has been done here, if they're removing rubble/ topsoil strip that is not a productive days work. I am increasingly concerned by these delays there is no good reason for them, diversions don't take 3 years to resolve!

  11. Hi Tom, great update and thanks for your reply on the opening ceremony idea by the way.. Brilliant.
When things slow down I find us North Walians pessimistic, I get very much frustrated cos I want to get there with excitment. I remember a poem that I saw in a Doghnut shop in Dublin when I was based there.
    A poem from Oscar Wilde.
To the pessimist and the optimist the difference is drole.
The optimist sees the Donut the pessimist sees the hole. haha
On that bombshell, lets move on my friend, cheers again to the best channel in the business 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇨🇮⚽😀👍👍
