Discover hidden gems along Slovakia’s scenic Danube bike route!
I would like to invite you on a small adventure bike tour along the Danube River, covering a distance of approximately 60 km near Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Along the banks of one of Europe’s largest rivers, I will introduce you to several interesting spots that are worth visiting. All my videos include subtitles. Please select your preferred language on my YouTube channel. My bike journey began in Kyselica, where I have lived for over 10 years. Kyselica is a small village in southwestern Slovakia. Geographical Location: Kyselica is situated in the district of Dunajská Streda, which lies on the Žitný Ostrov (Great Rye Island), a large island formed by the Danube River. The village is surrounded by flat and fertile lands, typical of the region, and is close to the Little Danube (Malý Dunaj) river. Population: It is a small village with a population of around 200-300 people, giving it a peaceful, rural character. Like many villages in this region, Kyselica has a history intertwined with Hungarian and Slovak cultures. due to historical border changes. It has a strong Hungarian-speaking minority, and bilingual signs are common. The Ferry Snack Bar in Kyselica was a small yet popular local spot situated near the ferry crossing. Unfortunately, it has been closed for nearly two years due to a change in management. I hope it reopens someday, as it was a fantastic place to grab a drink or a light snack while enjoying the natural beauty of the Danube. The bike path we’re on now was built as part of the Gabcíkovo Water Power Station project. It doubles as a dam, acting as a flood barrier for the Danube River. Cars and motorbikes are not allowed on this road—only bicycles, inline skates, and similar non-motorized transport. This makes it quite safe and, at times, gives you the sensation of being on an ocean shoreline. This spot is not only very popular with walkers but also attracts many fishermen. Hotel Kormorán is a well-known hotel located in Slovakia, specifically in the village of Šamorín, which is situated along the Danube River., about 25 kilometers southeast of Bratislava. The hotel offers a variety of rooms and suites, catering to both business travelers and leisure guests. Options typically include standard rooms, family rooms, and more luxurious suites with river views or garden access. What I enjoy most about Hotel Kormorán in Šamorín are the outdoor facilities. There’s a well-maintained park with a small lake and a bridge. Occasionally, they host water sports competitions there. The park is home to a few animals, as you can see, and features several small statues that create an intimate atmosphere. Outdoor Terrace: During warmer months, the hotel offers outdoor dining on its terrace, allowing guests to enjoy meals with scenic views of the surrounding nature and the Danube River. Sports Facilities: The hotel offers a variety of outdoor sports facilities, including tennis courts, cycling paths, and hiking trails. Hotel Kormorán has a wellness center offering a range of spa services, including massages, saunas, and a whirlpool. The spa is designed for relaxation and rejuvenation, appealing to guests seeking a wellness retreat. Given its proximity to the Danube River, Hotel Kormorán provides opportunities for water sports such as kayaking, fishing, and boat trips along the river. On the left side of the dam, which serves as our bicycle path, you’ll find a small marina. This marina acts as a hub for boating and river activities, directly connected to the hotel and offering docking services for boats. It’s a popular spot for both tourists and locals, thanks to its location near the river and the hotel’s recreational amenities. On the right side is Beach Mikri. Both the marina and Beach Mikri are owned by, or part of, Hotel Kormorán in Šamorín. The beach area is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Danube River, offering a serene and relaxing atmosphere for guests. Beach Mikri is an artificial beach with a sandy shore where guests can relax and enjoy a beach-like environment. While not a natural riverside beach, it provides a comfortable space with loungers and umbrellas for sunbathing and relaxing. There are also beach volleyball courts and other sports activities available for guests who want to stay active during their visit. Beach Mikri has a beach bar where guests can grab drinks, snacks, and light meals area. The bar serves refreshments such as soft drinks, cocktails, and beers, making it a convenient spot to relax with a drink while enjoying the pool and beach A section of Beach Mikri includes a mini zoo, which is essentially a small farm where domestic animals are kept. Occasionally, some of these animals are let loose, like this rabbit I found here. To be honest, when I first saw the rabbit, I initially thought it was some kind of special breed of dog. However, the waiter confirmed that it was indeed a rabbit. As you noticed earlier, Beach Mikri hosts live events, DJ sessions, and themed parties during the high season, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere for guests. The X-Bionic Sphere in Šamorín is a state-of-the-art sports and leisure resort, designed to cater to athletes, sports enthusiasts, and families. It offers world-class facilities, making it a unique destination for training, events, and recreation. As you know, this area along the Danube is quite popular for water sports. Originally, the Danube River wasn’t as wide, but the construction of the Gabcíkovo Water Power Station in Slovakia significantly changed the landscape. Several villages were affected by this project. For example, parts of ?unovo were flooded or transformed into reservoirs Bodíky was also heavily impacted, with sections of the village submerged. Dobrohoš? wasn’t completely lost, but parts of it were affected. Lastly, my small village, Kyselica, was relocated, with many of its residents moving to new areas. Yachtcentrum Šamorín is not only a marina for boats and yachts but also offers facilities for caravans and motorhomes, making it a versatile destination for travelers who prefer to stay on land while enjoying the waterside ambiance. Marina Facilities and Services. Mooring and Docking: The marina offers several mooring options for different sizes and types of boats, including yachts and smaller vessels. Yachtcentrum Šamorín provides facilities for boat maintenance and repairs. For visitors who do not own a boat, the marina may offer boat rentals and charters, allowing guests to explore the Danube River and its surrounding areas. The marina could provide sailing lessons or boating courses for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. The marina likely has on-site dining options, such as a restaurant or cafe, where guests can enjoy local cuisine and refreshments Clean and well-maintained shower and restroom facilities are available for marina guests, ensuring comfort during their stay. I’ve visited this place many times, usually stopping for a drink or a beer while cycling through the area. Since I live nearby, I’ve never needed to use the caravan services, and I don’t own a boat or yacht, so I haven’t fully taken advantage of it—yet! It’s definitely on my to-do list. This bistro is a popular stop for locals, tourists, and cyclists exploring the beautiful natural surroundings and cycling routes near the Danube. Menu: BAZZI Bistro offers a variety of dishes, focusing on simple, flavorful meals that cater to a wide audience. The menu likely includes: Breakfast and Brunch: Options such as fresh pastries, eggs, and sandwiches, perfect for those starting their day or taking a break during a cycling tour. Lunch and Dinner: A selection of light meals, salads, and heartier options like grilled meats, pasta, and local Slovak specialties. The bistro probably serves snacks such as fries, chips, or small bites, as well as desserts like homemade cakes and pastries. Bufet pri hrádzi is a small, casual snack bar located near the hrádz (embankment). Simple Menu: Bufet pri hrádzi typically offers a straightforward menu of fast food and drinks that are perfect for a quick refreshment during outdoor activities. Grilled Sausages (klobása): A popular choice for those seeking a savory snack. Hot Dogs, Burgers, and Fries: Easy-to-eat meals that are ideal for cyclists and families on the go. Langos (fried dough): A local favorite, often topped with garlic, cheese, or sour cream. The snack bar serves a range of beverages, including soft drinks, bottled water, beer, and possibly some local Slovak wines. I’ve eaten here many times. The fried fish is a popular choice, and I always order it with a beer. Café Dunaj is located close to Kalinkovo, a village near the embankment along the Danube River, not far from the Slovak capital, Bratislava. It is easily accessible by both car and bike, making it a convenient stop for those traveling along the Danube River or nearby cycling paths. As a café, Café Dunaj specializes in a variety of coffee drinks, including espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, and freshly brewed filter coffee. It may also offer other hot drinks like tea and hot chocolate. In addition to coffee, the café likely serves refreshing cold beverages such as soft drinks, lemonades, and juices, The café may offer a selection of light snacks, sandwiches, and pastries to accompany drinks. The Wind and Kite Surfing Area near Kalinkovo is a well-known spot for wind sports enthusiasts, thanks to its location along the Danube River and the wide, open water surfaces that are ideal for wind and kite surfing. Duna Bird Watching, near Kalinkovo, Slovakia, is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts along the Danube River. This area offers a variety of bird species, particularly waterfowl, that migrate or nest in the surrounding wetlands and forests. Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks, observe diverse birdlife, and experience the natural beauty of the Danube’s riverbank environment The location is also accessible from nearby towns and serves as an excellent spot for both amateur and experienced birdwatchers. Bufet Gajc (Malá Vyza) is a small riverside eatery located near Kalinkovo, Slovakia, along the Danube. We are now approaching the Lužný Bridge. The Lužný Bridge, part of the D4/R7 project in Bratislava, officially opened in September 2021 It spans 500 meters across the Danube River and is an integral connection between the D4 highway and the R7 expressway, facilitating traffic flow around the capital. The Lužný Bridge in Bratislava was designed to enhance transportation over the Danube River It connects Petržalka, one of Bratislava’s boroughs, with the eastern parts of the city, improving accessibility for cyclists, pedestrians, and public transit. This bridge is part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable transportation solutions and encourage environmentally friendly commuting options across the region. The bridge, 35 meters wide, accommodates a four-lane highway with additional paths for cyclists and pedestrians. It has three spans, with lengths of 130, 170, and 130 meters, and stands about 20 meters above the river, ensuring a clearance of 10 meters for ships. The load-bearing capacity of the bridge allows for significant traffic, with lanes designed at 3.75 meters wide. Its construction used high-strength concrete and reinforced steel, ensuring durability Construction of the entire section, including the Lužný Bridge, took several years, as part of the larger D4 bypass, aiming to reduce congestion in Bratislava. The Lužný Bridge will serve multiple types of transportation, including pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, and public transit lanes. It emphasizes sustainability and aims to reduce reliance on car travel. What I love most about this bridge is the stunning view of the Danube and its surroundings. It’s also a great spot for cycling, as the design minimizes traffic noise, making the ride much more peaceful. Bufet U Kapitána (CAPTAIN) is a casual snack bar located near the Danube River, close to Bratislava. It’s a popular stop for cyclists, hikers, and locals who enjoy the riverside setting. The snack bar offers simple refreshments, drinks, and quick meals, perfect for those looking for a relaxing spot to enjoy nature along the river. Its laid-back atmosphere and scenic views make it a favorite among visitors exploring the Danube’s banks. The cycling path along the Danube River is quite popular, which has led to the presence of several snack bars and refreshment stops. One of the primary purposes of the Cunovo waterworks system is to protect the surrounding regions from flooding, particularly during high water levels. In addition to its industrial role, the Cunovo area has become a hub for water sports, particularly whitewater rafting, kayaking, and other recreational activities, especially in the Cunovo Water Sports Centre. Bodza Csárda is a charming riverside restaurant located near the Danube River, offering a traditional Hungarian dining experience with a focus on regional cuisine. The term “csárda” refers to a type of country inn or tavern common in Hungary, typically serving hearty, home-style meals. My favorite meal is Hungarian Fish Soup (Halászlé). In some restaurants, the portion is so large that there’s often no room for a second course. What makes it unique is the preparation of the broth, where the fish fillets are served. This broth is made from various parts of the fish, which are simmered and then strained or pressed, resulting in a rich, flavorful liquid. It’s typically served with spicy red paprika peppers. Be sure to taste your soup before adding extra paprika, as it can sometimes be quite strong even in its original form. Csente Csárda is a traditional Hungarian-style tavern, known for its authentic regional cuisine and cozy atmosphere.
