Day 227. 80km (91567kms 8yrs)
After traveling in a pair for a couple of weeks I now made coffee for one, and set out alone into Pécs, with an unusually glum feeling.
Having found the city centre supermarket closed for the weekend already on Saturday afternoon it was a great relief to find the out of town Tesco was open so as I could stock up on supplies for the day. It was my 21yr travelversay which I always like to mark in some way, especially important today. So I picked up some fancier than usual wine and chocolate alongside my groceries.
And now I just pedalled north hoping the endorphins would cheer me up as I rode. I’d planned to return to eurovelo 6 for the ride to Budapest, but Harry had recommended I go via lake Balaton, for a more scenic ride. It would be a few more kilometres and a bit hillier than I’d planned for and I had a deadline in Budapest. So I rode all afternoon, hardly stopping, along fairly busy roads, and the occasional bike path, through villages of colourful bungalows and slender churches.
Right on sunset I turned into the patch of forest I’d hoped to reach, groping around in the dark to find a flattish, bramble-free patch. Pitching the tent I was conscious of the absence of a fire, and company. It had been nice not to worry about personal safety whilst camping in a pair. Now I was nervous to use my headtorch again.
Once settled though, I cracked my Mendozan Malbec, and enjoyed my little travelversary party for one. Back to solo independent travel for better or worse.

all on my own again and feeling unusually glum about it. And this will not do because today is my 21-year travel anniversary, which I always like to celebrate. But that’s going to be largely dependent on finding an open supermarket today. It’s Sunday and the supermarket I found yesterday afternoon was already closed for the weekend. So, I hope I’m not going to go hungry and thirsty on my 21 year travelversary. Hurry for Tesco’s and Sunday trading. First off, I’ve got a refund to get back on these empty cans. I don’t know where I do that though or how. [Music] I’ve got my voucher 50 for a can. So that’s about 25 Aussie cents. And then I guess they’re going to take that off my shopping bill. [Music] Just got some yummy treats for my travel versary dinner. Found home. Feeling better, but still a bit glum. See if um some What’s the Is it endorphins from exercise? Let’s see if I can’t improve them with a 70k ride. I’d planned to return to Uravel 6 and follow the Danube into Budapest, but Harry’s advice was that it’s maybe not the most scenic or interesting route. So instead, I’m coming northwest of it to Lake Balaton, which hopefully I should reach tomorrow. And that should be a more interesting ride hopefully. Goldfish Lake. Still waiting for those endorphins to kick in, but the scenery is nice. The sun’s coming out. [Applause] I’m aiming at a piece of forest about 20 km away, which if this wind doesn’t pick up too much, I should be able to make right around sunset hopefully. [Music] [Music] [Applause] So It’s too dark. It is too dark really. But I found my spot. Let’s get this tent up and let’s get this 21st uh travelvery party started. So, party treats, fresh bread from Tesco’s. I’ve got some ham, Tesco Bear, my favorite chocolate with Marzy pan. But most importantly, I have a Mendozan Malbeck, which is my favorite type of wine for my 21-year travel vers. Okay, no more sadness. Happy travelversary to me. Cheers. Excellent choice. Cheers to 21 years of hoboing around the world. Now bye-bye bicycle. And to round my day off, thank you so much indeed to Zad who bought me coffee on the buy me a coffee up. That cheers me up no end. Thank you so much indeed. You are so so kind. Thank you.
