Day 228. 74km (91641kms 8yrs)

Strange sounds in the forest last night; lots of roadsigns warn of deer so perhaps it was them wailing and calling. But I’d been warm enough, and the tent was dry as I packed away, revelling in a return to my usual departure time – about 2 hours earlier than of late!

With a warm showers host booked I had 75kms to cover, plus a ferry to catch over the narrowest portion of lake Balaton. Even before the lake I picked up a bike path which guided me to the departure point of Szántódrév. The vehicle ferry goes every half an hour and is a few euros for passenger and bike for the 15minute crossing.

On the other side I mistakenly turned immediately onto the coastal route but should’ve paused in the village of Tihani. Instead I stopped 10kms later in Balatonfüred on its gorgeous flower-filled lake-front promenade. The guide book says you can drink the yellowish minieral water from a fountain in the main square, but it was sectioned off, and marked as not for drinking.

I lingered in this very lovely place as long as time allowed before continuing around the lake a final 20kms to my hosts in Balatonfúzfó. The language barrier meant communication was limited but we managed with the help of Google translate, and I was treated to a meal of cheese and salami with home baked bread, homemade jam, and milk straight from the farmer! (Which my hosts had microwaved I believe I was told). Hungarians eat their main meal and lunchtime, and a lighter meal – like the English 5pm tea – in the afternoon/evening. A bed was prepared for me in their home which 8 children had grown up in and since moved out from.

  1. Welcome to lake Balaton Helen. This where we spend every summer. Usually on the south side. Shame you didn’t travel a bit west to lake Heviz ( it’s a hot lake, pretty interesting).
have’s good journey towards Budapest. Not too far from that east edge of Balaton. I bet you can’t wait to see mum❤️. Don’t forget, you have to go to one of those SPAs in Budapest. Touristy one could be a but pricey these days, but you should have some local ones all over the town and afternoons after 3 of 4 are tend to be cheaper
