The steepest challenge in the UK. Last week, I asked myself a question. Can an average cyclist conquer the steepest road in the UK? My journey began in January 2025, driven by a desire to improve my fitness. I bought an indoor trainer and entered the virtual cycling world of Zift. Since then, I’ve ridden over 2500 m and climbed 150,000 ft. I wondered, could my virtual fitness match the real challenge ahead? Before my attempt, nerves kicked in. I live over an hour away from Bamford Cloth, and I knew I only had one shot. The climb itself is narrow with small branches and fallen leaves making it slippery. A true test of grip and determination. I arrived at the base, took a deep breath, and started my ascent. At first, I thought I was ready. But soon, I realized my tires had no grip. No matter how hard I pedled, I couldn’t find purchase on the treacherous surface. I pushed on as far as I could, but eventually I reached the halfway point and had to stop. Gutted, I looked up the hill, my efforts weren’t enough. Still, I refused to give up. I’ve decided to try again, but with winter approaching and conditions worsening, I might only get one more chance before the year ends. This time I plan to use a mountain bike, hoping its tires will give me the grip I need. The only problem, I don’t own one yet. Time to find a bike capable of tackling that brutal climb and leave the rest to my determination.
