September 19, 2025 — Begin Again Video Journal No. 38
After three nights of rest in Bayonne, I recorded this reflection before setting out once more — this time toward the Pyrenees and the crossing into Spain. The calm before the climb, a moment to gather thoughts and prepare for what lay ahead: new terrain, new language, and the long road south continuing.
Good morning from Bion and France where I am preparing to depart this morning. I’ve been here for three nights and two days editing video at this we desk here over my right shoulder, but also checking out this cool town. Not far away are the Pyrenees in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. And I will go to all three today. And if I’m successful, I will arrive to Pamplona near the end of the day. It’s about 100 miles away. Not quite. So roughly 160 km through the mountains. So that will be significant. However, if I’m successful, I’ll also be south of the Pyrenees, the biggest mountains. Anyway, at the end of this initial day, riding into Spain, so that’ll be very comforting. From Pmplona, I will ride south, eventually skirting Madrid to the west and heading south to Tarifa. I will not be riding to Gibralta because customs made it very difficult to ship a package there because it’s outside of the EU by now, that is the UK. Instead, I will ride to Tarifa where a box is already waiting for me, including parts for this bicycle. By then, I hope to have stopped for many days to publish all of what remains of the Europe story of Begin Again. And so when I arrive to Tarifa, all I’ll have to do is prepare for the departure. At that juncture, I’ll have no reason to delay and I’ll be on a ferry boat to Tangier, to Tangier, as we often say in English. officially opening the African portion of the journey.
