Welcome to Annecy, the pearl of the Alps! Today, I’ll take you to discover this magical city, nestled between lake, mountains, and historical heritage. First stop: the old town! With its cobbled streets and romantic canals, Annecy is nicknamed the ‘Venice of the Alps.’ The Palais de l’Île is an iconic historical monument dating back to the 12th century. Built on a natural island formed by the Thiou River, it is one of the most photographed sites in Annecy. It’s impossible to talk about Annecy without mentioning its castle! This former fortified castle dating back to the 12th century has been transformed over the centuries, notably by the Dukes of Savoy. It is now a museum. Listed as a historical monument since 1959. On the lakeside, an emblematic place attracts visitors: the Pont des Amours. This picturesque bridge connects the Pâquier to the Jardins de l’Europe and lives up to its name. Legend has it that couples who cross it will stay together forever. This bridge offers a magnificent view of the lake and the mountains. Right next to it, the Pâquier, originally pastures. Today, it is a relaxation and leisure area that extends over 7 hectares. On the other side, the statue of Claude Louis Berthollet has watched over the lake since 1843, paying homage to this famous chemist and inventor of bleach. The Jardins de l’Europe, located on the shores of Lake Annecy, are a veritable green setting in the heart of the city. This park is the ideal place for a quiet stroll in the shade of century-old trees. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Annecy invite you to escape. The lake offers many activities. By bike or on foot, each shore offers its share of wonder. Between pedal boats, paddleboards, and cruises, it is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the alpine landscapes. It is possible to cycle around the lake. A greenway has been created , part of which uses a disused railway line. The Château de Duingt, like something out of a fairy tale, sits enthroned on its peninsula, watching over the lake like a guardian. The Imperial Palace is an iconic Annecy hotel, nestled on the lake’s shores. Opened on July 14, 1913, this Belle Époque-style establishment is distinguished by its elegance and history. It offers breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The Aviary, located right next door in the Charles Bosson Park, invites you to peacefully contemplate the birds. Annecy is full of religious architectural treasures. The Saint-François de Sales church, with its Baroque style, was built from 1642. Annecy Cathedral is a historic building built in the 16th century. Inside, there is an imposing organ, a listed historical monument, as well as stained-glass windows depicting Saint Francis de Sales, who was one of the first bishops to officiate there. The Notre-Dame-de-Liesse Church is an iconic landmark located in the heart of Annecy’s old town. Higher up in the town, the Basilica of the Visitation offers breathtaking views and houses the relics of Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jeanne de Chantal. Built between 1922 and 1930, it was consecrated in 1949. Its 72-meter-high bell tower is topped with a 7-meter bronze cross. For outdoor enthusiasts, the surrounding areas of Annecy offer exceptional hiking. From the summit of Semnoz, the view of the lake and the Alps is breathtaking. Just 10 km from Annecy, the Gorges du Fier are a natural wonder sculpted by time. This impressive canyon was carved by the Fier River, offering a striking spectacle of steep cliffs and unique rock formations. Since 1869, a footbridge has allowed visitors to cross these dizzying gorges. Walking 25 meters above the Fier, you will discover the ‘Giant’s Potholes’, cavities carved by water over the millennia. The shadows and natural shapes leave room for the imagination. Some see faces sculpted by nature, others fantastical creatures. Next to the gorges, the Château de Montrottier is a magnificent medieval castle built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The castle is also listed as a Historic Monument and has the Musée de France label. A few kilometers from the Gorges du Fier, another architectural masterpiece awaits us: the Pont de la Caille. This suspension bridge, built in 1839, overlooks the gorges of the Usses torrent at a height of more than 140 meters. With its majestic appearance and two large towers, it is a testament to 19th-century civil engineering. Today, it is a must-see for lovers of thrills and spectacular panoramas. Annecy and its surroundings are full of natural and historical treasures. Our visit to Annecy is coming to an end… but this city still has a thousand treasures to discover! So, when are you coming?
