Cycling things no one tells you, and on today’s episode we’re talking route planning.
*(app suggestions are not sponsored)*
Finding new routes, where you live, or when you’re somewhere new can be difficult. Or it can be easy to just ride the same routes because you know them.
But there’s a couple of apps that make it very easy to plan routes in only a few minutes, here’s my process, hopefully it helps.
Let’s have a chat down in the comments because I’m sure people have things to add and there’s probably some things l’ve missed.

Things every cyclist should know, but nobody tells you. Part six, how to plan cycling routes. Figuring out where to ride your bike isn’t always easy, especially if you’re visiting somewhere new. And so, here’s my favorite ways of finding and planning routes. I have two go-to apps, and the first one is Kimoot. Using the app, if we go to the route section and then choose a location, it uses data from loads of other cyclists to suggest popular routes. Some of the routes also have reviews and images to give you a sense for what the route is all about. But typically I will hit customize and then I can include any other roads or sections that look interesting and change my start and end point to wherever I’m riding from. At this point you can save it, but I typically like to use the Google Street View feature quickly just to check a few of the roads. This helps to make sure that I’ve not accidentally chosen a grally track or a busy main road. Once I’ve saved the route, it will automatically appear in the route section of my Wahoo bike computer. But if you don’t have a cycling GPS, Kimut’s app also has a navigation feature and you can use that on your phone. The second app that I use is Strava. Recently, they’ve put a lot of work into their route planner and you can also load popular routes and have it create a bespoke route for you, which is a really nice feature. Like I said, you can use a cycling GPS or your phone for these, but I would really recommend getting a dedicated GPS unit if you’re going to do a lot of cycling, but that’s a whole other
