Well, if you’ve been traveling across South Dakota or been in Vermillion in the past couple of days, you may have seen a man on a bike with a full set of camping gear on him. That man is looking to travel halfway across the world by this time his trip is over by helping communities in West Africa build better lives. Cooper Seamer has more from Vermilion. George Barks is halfway through cycling his way across the United States before making the leap across the ocean to West Africa. all for charity. The former Royal Navy submariner from Peterborough, England, he started his journey on the west coast near Atoria, Oregon. He plans to make it all the way to Virginia Beach before the middle of November. And he has learned a lot about the vastness of the US along the way. Even some of the like open landscape. It’s really um it really h really humbles you to know that you know some of these some of these towns are so isolated. Barks is partnering with the UK-based charity Village by Village with the goal of raising roughly $20,000 to build infrastructure in Ghana. At the end of his cross-country trip, he’ll go to Ghana to build the projects he himself raised money for. These communities lack uh health care, education, sanitation, and fresh water. And I think a lot of a lot from day to day, a lot of us take um take the privileges we have of having water come out of our taps. I really want to immerse myself within their community and within their um within their culture um just so I can really learn how how difficult these people um and these communities have it. George has been keeping people updated with his progress online. And while none of these funds will stay in the United States, he says he’s been amazed about how many South Dotans and other Americans have heard about his mission and donated anyways. From people following on social media to one-off encounters along his trip, he’s been impressed with the kindness of others here and their generosity for others around the world. And it’s that that sort of mindset of um everyone is really positive towards their uh towards their growth and and their goals. That’s that’s really inspiring. George says this isn’t his trip alone, but for those that care about others, it’s a trip they’re taking together. What makes this trip happen is is the people who are supporting whether it be encouragement um through social media sharing or the donations. It’s not it’s not me doing this. It’s it’s we are doing this in Vermillion. Cooper Seamer, Dakota News Now.
