Matt’s interview from Kat Cowa’s Whats On Guide on BBC Radio Sheffield talking about Ride To The Wall 2025. The audio is a recordong directly from the BBC Sounds website and the fottage is all shot by myself at Woodhall Services South, before the ride.

Uh Matt’s in Wood Services in South York this morning. Matt, what are you doing so early up on a windy wet Saturday morning? Well, good morning. Yes. So, uh today is the ride to the wall. It’s the annual uh motorcycle mass charity ride to the National Memorial Arboritum in Alus where where we go to honor our fallen brothers uh whose 16,000 names are on the memorial wall that have died in conflict since World War II. And you are a veteran yourself, aren’t you? I am. Yes. I served 12 years in the army. And tell us a bit about the event. So, is it, you know, you’re traveling down? Are you all together when you’re traveling down? Are you all coming from all over the country? Yeah, it’s it’s right to the wall. There’s 12 different star locations around the country. Uh I’m I’m in charge of Woodall Services South. Uh and I’ I’ve got 650 bikes registered. Goodness. And uh around 900 people. Uh we we we leave Woodall uh bang on 8:30 with with police and highways helped to get onto the motorway. Wow. And yeah, so I’m I’m leading 600 bikers down the motorway to the arborita. That’s incred that must be such an amazing site. It it’s it’s such a spectacle. Yeah. When when we all start up at the beginning, the the ground the ground shakes. It’s the thunder coming in. We’ve got we’ve got riders from all over the Yorkshire region. Uh we’ve got got people from Blackpool, from Newcastle, all over the north of England come to start at Woodall. That’s amazing. And also as a as a veteran yourself, that feeling of, you know, all of these people together, acting as one must really remind you of your service. Absolutely. You don’t you don’t get no camaraderie like you do. And this is as close as I get to it now. I do I do probably 10 charity rides a year. I do the Yorkshire ride of remembrance on remembrance Sunday every year and that is my remembrance parade. This this is also this is also part of my remembrance month. Uh and you can you can probably hear some bikes coming in now. I tell you we can also hear I can also hear the wind but presume Oh my goodness. Yeah. Yeah, you can hear some bikes coming in. Amazing. How But I mean I was just going to I was going to say about the wind and the weather, but presumably unless it is absolutely no go. I mean you’re you’re veterans, you know. You’re used to miserable conditions, aren’t you? Yeah. You Well, yeah. With with skin’s waterproof in it. So come come rain or shine, we’re we’re going to the arboritum to one of those 16,000 names that can’t ride. Absolutely. Then they’re no longer here. We we’re going to remember our brothers and sisters that have lost their lives in conflict. That is the only reason we’re going. And and what reaction do you get as you drive through down the country? We we drive down the motorway and I I lead at 45 mph. Uh cars cars are waving, honking their own going past. Vehicles on the other side of the motorway are waving honking the horns. People are stood on the motorway bridges waving to us as we go past. It’s it’s a really really really emotional day. Oh, well, I’m I’m wishing you all the luck with it. Thank you so much for sparing some time to tell us all about it. And look, if you if you see Matt and the other riders today, give them a wave. Give them a pip. Um I’m sure it mean will mean the world to to them. Thank you so much, Matt, in Wood Service um revving the engines, getting ready for this very very emotional ride.
