Day 50 of The Long Ride to Byzantium
BUCHAREST 🇷🇴 ➡️ RUSE 🇧🇬 (74 km)

First ride after the accident — and what a day. After some recovery days in Bucharest, the maddest city I’ve ever seen (endless traffic jams, brutalist chaos, and strangely kind people), it was time to move again.

Cold headwinds followed me the whole way toward the Bulgarian border, cycling across the endless autumn plains — grey, quiet, and hauntingly beautiful. You can’t always have summer — sometimes you just have to embrace the melancholy.

Crossing the incredible Friendship Bridge between Romania and Bulgaria was a special moment. The feeling of rolling into a new country never gets old.

My welcome to Bulgaria? Straight into an eerie industrial wasteland outside Ruse 😅 — spooky, but fine.

Now exploring Bulgaria with no rush toward Istanbul. Tomorrow: the rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo, another UNESCO gem. If you’ve got tips or places I shouldn’t miss, drop them in the comments.
