Cycling down in Carrick on Suir with Orla Walsh for L’Etape Ireland. This is the second year of L’Etape and we’re doing the 150km cycle. The cycle has everything, big climbs, rapid decents and plenty of food stops. Great to be able to cycle the Irish roads where Sean Kelly and Sam Bennett grew up on.

[Music] the top and we are out of gap. [Music] Yahoo! [Music] How’s it going? Welcome back to the channel. We are in for a cracking one today, lads. We are down in Caragon Shore, the home of Irish cycling for Latap Ireland. I say the home of Irish cycling because some of Ireland’s top cyclists have come out of this little small town in Ireland. Most notably Sean Kelly, Sam Bennett. Right, before we get stuck into this cycle, I need to get down and register. Get all that faffing out the way first and then we can enjoy it. Fun fact, Ireland’s oldest bike shop, 1907. Save that for a pop quiz sometime. [Applause] Protect the week, Mr. Roy. I have to get Eddie to show us a few top hair. Lads, you ru. So, we’ve got this year’s colors. We’ve got the sunset orange. This is the most popular color. This lovely per pink. The traditional green is always going to be on show. And then we’ve got the fashionable white. Derek, we’re ready to roll. Best luck everyone. I’m not doing on this bike. I’ll be uh chilling, I think. Chilling. But um yeah, all good. Best luck. It’s going to be a cracking day. Got it. The top island. We are out the gap and we’re at the front. This could be a full gas effort. [Music] Quick little roll out through the town. There’s two options today. 100 km or 150. We are doing 150 km. Had some savage climbs on it. Picking core flowers apart up the V up seskin 1900 m tall climbing today. [Music] What are we going for then? Ara, I’m just going to get dragged to the bra line. Then I’ll let everyone go. I don’t know how it’s happened, but we’re in the front group. I think we could be going hard today. [Music] L came off. I don’t know if you catch up as the front crew probably gone. I’m absolutely devastated. Chain came off. Came off the front group. Just couldn’t get back on. They were motoring down the road. It’s completely no man’s land. Going to have to wait for next route to pick me up. Oh man, disaster. My dreams at yellow jersey gone for another year. So we’re hung up to the first climb. The KM up ticking core and flowers the pot. This thing’s an absolute nightmare. Perfect timing for getting picked up as well. Couldn’t have timed it better. Oh god. Going backwards on it. Not worse when you see double digits 10 12%. All right, I came back for me. I’m going [Music] just getting top of taking core. Take a right. I’m going for flowers to pop. Help me Jesus. You see him on the way, help me Jesus. We are going straight and help me Jesus. Get her. Now I said it in the video. We did the wicky on this. Whoever gets a k on this claim, I’ll buy him at point. Come find me. Claims are always worth a view. Now we get to go down. Oh, what an absolute descent. Kraken, what a day we’re getting. So, 35 km in, first food stop. Believe it or not, Patty the pig didn’t come out. Just went in, used the toilet, back on the bike, and let’s keep going cuz to be honest, I had a right breakfast this morning. So, I’m still good. We’ll get to the next one then. It’s no hoes barred. Oh, yeah. I’m eating everything. So, we’re just heading across to Nairo Valley. I’m going to be heading up to the V and those mountains across the way. We are going up him. That’s Ireland is unbelievable when you get the weather days like this. You just can’t beat it. I am kind of regretting when I stopped use the title. I didn’t just grab a quick coffee. I think it would have doing the world of good. Just catching up to the next group. Oh, thank God. Few wheels to draft. [Music] [Music] [Music] I tell you, my legs are gone, lads. We just got to the top of the V there about to head down to descent and all I could hear over was, “Oh no, CI2 died.” She’s stuck in the smaller angle and uh the boys in the front of the group took off. My me legs are burning. I’m trying to keep up with them. 75k in the back halfway around. So, we’re at 1,035 m. I think there’s bang on 900 m to go, lads. I don’t know how I’m going to get around. I am gooseed. Doing all these whiff races has me legs gone. Need to calm down on them, but I am getting some results. I know where the farmer is coming from. There’s nothing better when you’re in the trenches and dying and you’re coming. Yeah. Have company. Yeah. Oh man. PE station is about 3 km away. We try to find a defib there. Get going again. Lunch time. This is well needed. I will never cycle past a boo stop again in my life. Ding. [Music] They did it again. They got the expensive ones. Hatty the pig. As I’m eating everything, starving. We need to get going again cuz if I don’t, my legs are gone all together. 50k to go. 700 m of climbing. Going to be a stock. [Music] We’re at the top of Man Falls. I think it’s 3.6 km climb. Oh, that’s in rag order. All right, let’s trying to see can she get a quick charge on the Di2. No joy with that one. I’m going 117 km on the clock. 35 to go with the infamous sesan climb at the end. I don’t know how we’re going to get up with that. I have a back pocket full of mamms. I’m going to have to destroy him to get some energy into me. I might have just found a reason why I have no legs today. 117 km. That’s the first bottle I’ve gone through today. Come on, Derek. Wakey wakey. So, I passed my parents. So, you’re saying we passed Mr. or Mrs. W? We did. And you wouldn’t even offer him a wheel? Well, they could have get on if they won. She just dropped him. She actually put up the power to get past him. Mercy. Just coming into Carrick. Dreading it as absolutely dreading it. If there’s an option to go straight on, hand on heart, I would take it. Let the heroes go left. Go up the climb. Get me to a coffee shop. Actually, forget it. They have beer. Get me a Get me a point. All right. Sesan Hill play the Jaws music. Going for the K. Derek. No. Survival mode. My legs. Every time I get out of the saddle, I’m cramping. I’m after to turn you around now. Yes. Thank you so much. You can tow me up. This fairness though. Kept going all day. Your legs are like a bloody hamster in the wheel spinning. Cadence exercise. Yeah. 6.6 average. As a fork lower goes. This is where Sean Kelly learned his thread up and down this the whole time as a young lad. [Music] Oh no. [Music] Yeah, I’m walking. No joke. When people stop in front of you. Yeah. What the [ __ ] You just want to put the foot down yourself and your man says 200 m to the top and then he just starts laughing. It’s a last time of the day. Stuck in a help me Jesus girl. I’d be glad not to see you for a while again. Siskin Hill completed. Once is enough. I don’t know how Sean Kelly was doing repeats on that thing. Christ the whole race. Let’s go. 500 m to the finish line. Thank God. Go and sprint me now and beat me in my back into car. An absolute pleasure. Thanks for having me around. Heat. Heat. [Applause] [Music] Stop the car in the mamm. We’ll have a look at it in a bit. Done. I just made it back. Did I get the yellow jersey? Oh, someone’s off. [Music] [Music] So that is Latab Ireland done. What an absolute cracking day, lads. Absolutely loved it. We’ll have a quick look at the stats. 150 km, 5 hours 26 minutes moving, 27.7 average, 1,935 m climbed. Lad, the climbs just never stopped. Oh, I broke up after it. What I did find amazing the cycle was the town of Carrick absolutely showed up for it. Wherever you were in the course, even if you felt you were in the middle of nowhere, if there was a house there, everyone was out, families clapping, cheering you along, just absolutely made the experience. And just finally, thanks a million to the lads the tap for asking me to come along. I’m dying, but I did absolutely love it. So, thanks a million for watching. If you can, give it a like, drop a comment. If you haven’t already, please subscribe. I’ll see you in the next one. [Music]

Whats the cutoff on this derek, and could people who arent very fit do it??
Derek. Your enthusiasm is infectious. As someone who spent 10 years travelling the country riding the many Club Sportifs before an enforced break, you have got me getting back out doing a bit with a winter plan and a view to riding events in 2026.
forgetting to drink. Weve all been there too late by time you find out.
Nice one Derek, I can see the Derek Feehan sportive in an other few years 😉
Paddy the pig is coming out 😂😂 and your legs were like there in a hamster wheel 😂the laughing I did savage video looked epic. Raging I was sick 😢
I bet you bought that pink shirt 🙂
I had PTSD watchin that Derek 😂 When the results came out I managed 17th on the Sprint Seg 🥳 Only 3 sec off 3rd I think and I had to sit up twice during my sprint because the wind blew the peak of my cap down over my eyes (not a problem you have on Zwift 😂) – so defo robbed me a couple of sec there. Savage spin though. Those climbs man, proper leg sappers. And I read recently that long rides are eating/drinking contests as much as anything else, have to get the fluids in. You can set up reminder alerts on you Garmin. Thats what I had to do. But great vid as always 👍
Nothin like preparing well with your battery dying on you like that😂
phew, I wasn't going to male a 3rd week without a video, the coffee was gone cold!
Absolutely class video Derek, shame I didn't get to meet you at the Lakeland Gravel Grinder this weekend. Hey would you mind telling me what handheld camera you use?
Super stuff I enjoyed event and Video ❤
The travels and travails of the Kilkenny cat road scratcher!!
Another cracking video Derek, ye hit the jackpot with the weather, decent avg speed with that elevation 👍. Martin
Well done Derek. Great event. Not liking this two weeks off! There was children crying 😭 here! 😂
Another cracker of a video Derek and what a day for the event 👌🏼 those stats are really good fair play 🙌🏼 I am raging I missed it 😅
Derek, love your videos – you're an absolute beast on the bike! 👏🏼
I gotta say though, from the snippets you share, it looks like your fuelling strategy might be holding you back a little. I’m not talking about any geeky, over-the-top stuff, just a basic plan that could make a world of difference.
I learned this later in my cycling journey, and the improvement was honestly eye-opening. Simple things like a bidon every 30K and X grams of carbs every 30 minutes can have a huge impact. Apps like Eat My Ride (free, by the way!) take the guesswork out of it. You’d be amazed at the difference, especially on rides over 60K when your glycogen stores start to dip.
Imagine doing a 150K with proper fuelling and hydration and comparing it to a ride using your current crisps and Haribo strategy. 😅 That could be a fun video to make, and I bet the results would blow your mind!
Keep up the awesome work – you’re already a fantastic cyclist, and I just think a few tweaks in this area could take you to the next level.
Cheers! Mike 😊😀

First time I went up seskin hill was as a kid on a BMX help me Jesus 😂😂
What a day for it. Although dropped by my friend after 2km. But hey he came 2nd, so can't complain to much. Came in 41 myself. Some savage hills. Double seskin next time
Great video thanks and great effort! Would love to make it home if it's on again next year – if you could just guarantee the weather 😂
