Well, we finally had the chance to see if Yamaha were being truthful about the R9’s engine being near as dammit the same as the MT’s, so Gemma headed to JHS for a bit dyno action – here’s what we found!

Unicorns. Right. I haven’t took no batteries out of that. No. In sausage dilemma. O. Right. We’ll give that a go there. Mode. Rain. Street. Sport. Custom. Settings. Vehicle function. Y RC. YRC. Modes. Oh my god. Custom one. Power bike. One. One. Brake control off. Best thing that can happen with that. Oh, track mode. Oh, hello. There we go. Lift control off. Great control off. Flipper on. Stability control off. There we go. That’s us. We’re on. [Music] That’s us. We’re on. Heat. Heat. Woo! Yamaha, please put an exhaust in this so we can get some extraction on it. Yeah. Yamaha R9, 106 horsepower and 62 ft-lb of torque. I know what you’re saying. I thought you were supposed to know that. Adding on 12 to 15% probably going to be 118 between 118 to 122, I’d say. real nice power curve. Makes the torque nice and strong over a flat area. As we already know with this engine, nothing seems different on this particular engine or bike compared to the other bikes in the that use this engine platform. So, the XSR, the MT, they all make the same sort of horsepower, same power curve, and they all want to rev more cuz it gets to 10,000 RPM, and you hit this hit this wall, it just wants it just wants to rev. Yeah, it really wants to rev. You can feel it’s got a lot of grunt. I can see why it’s winning at everything. Yeah, it is. It is a bit of a game changer with with the well with the torque in it and the power delivery on it and it’s so smooth. We can have a look at against just so you can see the engine platform. This was the XSR 900 that we did. I mean literally three at peak but exactly the same power curve. So could be a small little change in throttle mapping in ECU but overall nothing different. So they’re using the same. So, it confirms they’re using the same platform of engine. Nothing radic, nothing drastically changed in standard form on these bikes. What do you want to compare it against? Bikes of the class. The Honda, isn’t it? I did one of those in standard form the other day. Wo. Not even the same league, are they? Not even the same league. Peak performance, nothing in it. Two horsepower. It’s just everywhere else, isn’t it? Yeah. It’s the difference of nearly 5,000 RPM in revs, isn’t it, that we’ve got between making peak power at 10 and it 15 different animals. And we can have a look at it against the old old R six as well. This is the first R9 we’ve done on our dyno. Welcome. This is a a completely standard late model R six which we based which we baselined at 102 and 38 footpound of torque. Oh okay. So same same the R six is very much the same as the Honda. Yeah performance and way it delivers its power but just shows how you can change the capacity has a massive effect on the performance. But overall, lap time wise, I don’t think there’s been much in them to this year. No, no, no. Um, the old bike’s still good, still competitive. This new bike, so much easier to ride. I think I think that’s what we’re seeing. But it’s a road bike. Do you know what? You know what you’d pick straight away. You know what you’d pick straight away. Nice, easy, don’t you can be so lazy on it. Yeah. It does everything you want it to do. Changes nice. Everything about this bike seems nice. I did have to get used to it though, but I have been riding quite a lot of sports bikes. Yeah, this I found this different and I know I said I it felt longer. The handlebars are really close back to you which is it’s not it’s nice. You got control over the front end. Yeah. But you’ve got another foot and a bit of a fair afterwards you got to deal with. I am I’m getting used to and I’m and I’m enjoying that now. At first I was bit Oh. Oh no. Obviously ridden the the the engine platform. Yeah. In a naked version. Yeah. Um but yeah, try it. Try it on track. See, I’m more interested to see what the chassis is like. Yeah. See what it actually feels like against my old super sport GSXR. See what it’s like. Thanks, Will. Thanks. Oh, right. Put this back together then. [Music]
