When I make a video like this I usually spend the first two days just watching old footage, reminiscing old memories, and formatting ideas in my head of how best to tell the story. It’s pretty frustrating because after 48hours nothing is tangibly there. But over a week things slowly start to materialize with many hours into the night fine-tuning every part. Lofoten deserves to be honored in this way. I hope the two parts have provided valuable information for those that will have their own adventure on two wheels. Farewell Lofoten, thanks for the memories.

see lufferton’s tumult grand where towering cliffs in ocean stand who summits the fogs of cleaving beneath them the surges heaving and all is darkness mystery dread but mid the tumult sails are spread [Music] [Music] [Music] i’ve got my bike i’m about to have my breakfast and i’m going to cycle 120 kilometers in one of the most beautiful places in the world this is why i left my door in oslo and just decided to travel around norway on a bike because you get to these sort of points and you’re like okay i’m a lucky boy right now i really am [Music] [Music] on the island of westforg we finally come off the e10 and jump on a side road 815 where we head along the south coast for 40 kilometers in the early 1980s archaeologists uncovered the remains of a rich and powerful dynasty that lived on this island over 1 000 years ago the chieftain of borg built the largest viking longhouse ever discovered if you want to visit the reconstruction you’ll need to stay on the e10 or do a loop if you’re interested in history it’s well worth a visit [Music] good morning oh a bit of a bumpy road though it’s been a good morning guys all right lupton is looking beautiful i’m probably not looking that beautiful but the road is mine again onwards we go catch you later guys put your hand in my hand darling for many cyclists this is their favorite stretch of road it’s flat and on a clear day you can see the outline of the mainland with its mountains and glaciers you also get a great vista of what is to come your shoulders will relax and you’ll take in all the small details the sandy coves the rock formations and the birds that hover above you look out for the sea eagles with their two meter wingspan [Applause] [Music] [Music] this island is short and sweet you just spend four kilometers cycling across it but it doesn’t disappoint let’s compare this is me on a bike and this is me in a car which is better on a bike or car let us know in the comment section bike or car [Music] [Music] the last island and once again it doesn’t disappoint when you reach this point i highly recommend you take a little detour along road 816 it’s a beautiful road around the mountains and leads you to one of norway’s most prettiest fishing villages henning’s bar it’s set on a number of islands you can’t camp now so don’t put your tent on the football pitch unless you want to get in trouble there’s great little restaurants and cafes it’s a perfect place to have lunch and just sit back and watch the world go by [Music] 25 kilometers down the road and we’re in svol is that right matthew yes so we’re in svol var we’re in svalbard right now which is kind of the main main town on lufthan islands you know we’ve had blue sky again it was supposed to be really overcast today and it’s absolutely blue sky galore right now it’s like you know i mean you can’t blue sky can’t keep away from me it’s just on me like a rash and [Music] [Music] we finally say goodbye to the e10 and turn off onto road fv888 this is my favorite road on the islands a quiet remote area away from everything cycling lufferton is like having a magic key you can open doors others can’t the journey is what you cycle towards there is no destination just a number of moments to make your journey what it is well i take in our show from the faces and the places that i go [Music] each one i used to make all the things i know [Music] is when i talk and when i sing it’s like a cinder block in the diamond ring one small nugget in the [Music] whether you cycle alone or with others it’s hard to feel lonely in an environment like this you’ll feel the company and power of mother nature at all times a moment she may be kind in other moments she may throw everything she has at you you cannot control or fight her you can only yield accept and respect the great powers that govern these mythical lands for thousands of years people have just survived here the winters are long and dark and life was harsh and unforgiving sacrifices were made to the gods great banquet halls were built and times of both prosperity and famine shaped the islands and its people but one thing has remained the same this wild landscape has not changed for thousands of years from the viking times to the enlightenment it’s seen it all if you visit these islands take it all in feel its all and its presence there is a great comfort in knowing that there are things in this world more important than ourselves life is short time is precious and some moments just don’t last long enough but that’s what makes them precious no one forgets lofferty leaving so soon

  1. had to watch this twice as i could not believe what i was watching.
    well documented well filmed.
defiantly better on a bike as you're in the landscape. in a car you on the landscape and fail to appreciate it fully.

  2. Congratulations on the superb quality of your Lofoten films; they are some of the finest travel films I’ve seen on YouTube. You are an artist, a poet rather than a vlogger.

  3. The last two videos have been two of the best I've seen from anyone relating to cycle touring. Simply brilliant. The cinematography is incredible. The scenery amazing. Well done. Bike, bike, bike, bike!!!

  4. Your videos in Norway are really beautiful. Truly eye candy.😍 Recently I bought Canyon Grail alumunium & planning to do some bike packing. What is the best month to do travel in Norway? What mounted camera do you suggest?

  5. This 2nd part was better than the first and other previous videos as there was no hard rock music distracting the beauty of these islands or the landscape you are riding though. Most of your music choices were ok this time not too distracting nor over powering. I didn't notice any or if you did, only very minimal use of speeded up footage which is sooooo irritating so thank you for not doing it. The effort you put into making these videos is obvious just take on board my comments and then I think your videos would be totally epic. Thanks for making and sharing.

  6. Lofoten never disepoints in the summer. I just wish everyone could see henningsvær in the summer with no tourists. I grew up in henningsvær I remember the summers when henningsvær wasn't filled with tourists. but you can't hate them either because they are the people that keep the town alive now.

  7. bike vs car:
it is an unfair comparison and somewhat psychologically manipulated. in the biking photos you show primarily blue sunny skies. in the car driving videos it is primarily grey, overcast and gloomy. this has a subconscious negative effect in one’s perception therefore a fair comparison cannot be made if you do not supply equal conditions for examination.

otherwise, great documenting (oh…except for dissing on someone in a (?disability) scooter in Lofoten#1) .

  8. I camped at Hauklandstranda for 2 nights meeting other travelers while there, great area.
Hiked to the top of Mannen above the clouds, when up there had the Halo Effect from my shadow on the fog below covering Uttakleiv.
Greatest of all saw a beyond incredible Northern Light show that night lasting around 4 hours completely surrounding the sky, 360° view of lights.

  9. This is SO good! I am flabbergasted! The footage, the views, the Lofoten history, the geology part, and on top of that a brilliant poem, all crowned by a deep felt narration. You must be the best embassador to Norway! This morning your video raised me up several notches in mood. Thank you very much, Matthew!
