I have an early 60s varsity I got for cheap a few years ago, but now I'm using it to commute to and from work about 75% of the time. Im interested in building a good commuter road bike but don't want to take the 1-2k plunge all at once. Would it be insane to put a nice group set on this bike, wheels, then seat and handlebar to get some wrench time and then buy a decent frame and swap all the kit over?

I know it's a crap heavy bike (40lbs with my lock) but I'm cheap as hell and love tinkering with stuff. Are there better options to slowly work towards a nicer bike piece by piece?

That is quite heavy. But then I don’t know what the lock is.

That said – of course there is nothing wrong with your plan. It doesn’t sound *necessary* because you already commute on it. But newer kit would make it nicer to ride. I’m commuting on a frame I k ow almost nothing about. But it’s comfy. So I’ve put Campy 3×10 on it and it’s buttery smooth. It didn’t need it. But on the scheme of things it wasn’t expensive – a few tanks of fuel equivalent – and it makes my life a little more joyful when it silently slips from gear to gear, once per click – whereas before it sort of went from gear to gear but sometimes you had to go back and forth to get it to index correctly because everything has a bit of worn in slop.
