A Japanese woman living in America. Hello, I’m Nobana. Today, I’m shopping at Aldi, a supermarket whose number of stores continues to expand. I used to frequent Aldi when I lived in Germany. Aldi is a discount supermarket originating in Germany. It has no unnecessary decorations and very few staff members compared to other supermarkets. You need 25 cents to use a shopping cart. While other supermarket parking lots often have carts left all over the place, I’ve never seen that in an Aldi parking lot. There’s only one cart area, so there’s no need for staff to collect carts. As you may already know, Trader Joe’s, which is very popular among Japanese people, is a subsidiary of the German company Aldi Süd. I also like Trader Joe’s, but it’s far away, so I can’t go there often. I often check the fruit because some may be damaged. However, fruit is cheaper than at other supermarkets. The selection is limited, so I don’t make unnecessary purchases here. It saves money and time. When I think of mandarin oranges, I think of Wakayama mandarins. Wakayama mandarins are so delicious! These are the apples I always buy. Apple prices have gone up. I think they were $2.57 last time. But I’ve seen these apples for $4 and even $6 at other supermarkets, so Aldi is the best! As for potatoes, German potatoes are the best so far! German potatoes are delicious. I buy onions at a supermarket called US Food, so I don’t buy them here. Cabbage is also pretty cheap. Do you like butternut squash? As you’d expect from a German supermarket! They have sauerkraut. It’s fermented, so it’s good for your gut. Oktoberfest is coming up in Japan soon, right? I’d love to go to a Japanese Oktoberfest. I read a study that found that 70% of the food section of American supermarkets is made up of ultra-processed foods. I wonder what the percentage is in Japan? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s surprised by the fact that 70% of the grocery store is made up of ultra-processed foods. I want to live as healthy as possible. I want my children to have strong, healthy bodies and enjoy life. It’s okay to have fun and eat and drink as much as you want every now and then! However, I still don’t feel comfortable giving my kids colorful muffins and sweets every day. I was surprised to hear that my children’s classmates had a bag of chips or crackers in their lunchboxes . I ‘m sure I’ll continue to be surprised by things about American food culture! Isn’t it also a problem that ultra-processed foods are cheaper than fresh food? I’m grateful for my body, which is happy with just white rice, miso soup, and pickles. Sometimes I ask my husband if he misses German food, and he says he doesn’t at all! 😆! I miss German chocolate and the mulled wine at Christmas markets! I asked another German person, and she said she misses liver pâté. German dark sour bread and liver pâté are the perfect combination. German HARIBO is also sold here! 🥰 There are plenty of ultra-processed foods on the shelves here, too, but their popularity probably means people don’t have time to cook. I was surprised when I heard that the nurse working at my family doctor’s office juggles three jobs! However, considering the high rent, interest rates, cost of living, and various insurance premiums, I think the monthly payments are quite high. When trying to cut back on rent, which is likely the biggest expense, in the United States, safety concerns come into play. Even if you try to cut down on transportation costs, you can’t even go to the supermarket without a car. The reality is, you can’t easily get to the supermarket by bicycle. So, let’s cut back on food expenses. Ultra-processed foods are cheaper than fresh produce, so we eat only those. I think that this will inevitably lead to illness. As you all know, medical expenses can be quite high due to insurance. Since living in the United States, I’ve realized that maintaining good health is the best way to save money. I had Invisalign orthodontics in Germany. If I had had Invisalign in the United States, it might have been more expensive. Prices may continue to rise in the future, so I will continue to live frugally as I prepare to return to Japan next summer! In Germany, we drank tap water, so we didn’t need to buy water. How much will the total be? The checkout at ALDI in Germany is really fast, and you have to bag your items yourself. But at ALDI in America, the cashier puts your items in your cart, so it’s stress-free. 😊 We want to experience things that can only be experienced in America. 😊 I want my children to develop the strength to survive in any environment. One Sunday, we played pickleball and then came for breakfast. The store was really crowded. Have you ever been to Waffle House? My daughter wanted a fried egg. I decided to eat one with her. A cup of coffee costs $2.50. It’s not expensive! The Pampaka Channel is starting. 😊 I’m at Waffle House now. I’m going to eat a waffle. I’ll show you when the food arrives. 🥰 There seem to be many different types of waffles. America is so open and free. I love living in America. 😊 I asked the waitress if I wanted milk for my coffee, and she gave me a ton of milk! 😂! My husband said it was something he had to experience at least once while he was in the States, so we went for a truly American breakfast. This is truly an American breakfast! I was amazed when I first saw this crispy bacon! 😅 You eat this bacon with your hands, right?! I wonder how much carbohydrates there are in a single serving. Since this is one serving, I’m going to share it with my daughter. The cost of breakfast at Waffle House, including tip, was $37.16, or about 5,400 yen. I heard the Demon Slayer movie will be released in Japanese in the US, so I went to see it too. It’s great that it’s being released in Japanese, isn’t it? 🥰 I hope the second chapter of the movie will be available in Japan. I’m truly grateful to everyone who always supports me. Thank you for watching until the end.
