Cap Arkona (Geographie):
• Ein bekanntes Kap im Südosten der Insel Rügen (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
• Liegt zwischen den Ostseebädern Binz und Sellin.
• Bekannt für seine hohen Steilküsten und den Leuchtturm am Kap Arkona (eigentlich bei Putgarten, ganz im Norden von Rügen – oft verwechselt).
Das Schiff
• Baujahr 1927 bei Blohm & Voss in Hamburg.
• Ein Luxus-Passagierschiff der Hamburg-Südamerikanischen Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft.
• Fahrteinsatz vor allem nach Südamerika, galt als sehr elegant – Spitzname: „Der weiße Schwan des Südens“.
⚓ Im Zweiten Weltkrieg
• Ab 1940 von der Kriegsmarine requiriert.
• Diente als Unterkunftsschiff, später als Transportschiff.
⚓ Katastrophe am 3. Mai 1945
• In der Lübecker Bucht lag die Cap Arcona zusammen mit der „Thielbek“ und „Deutschland“.
• Auf den Schiffen wurden Tausende KZ-Häftlinge aus Neuengamme und anderen Lagern eingepfercht.
• Britische Jagdbomber griffen die Schiffe an, ohne zu wissen, dass sie voll mit Gefangenen waren (sie hielten sie für militärische Ziele).
• Die Cap Arcona ging in Flammen auf und kenterte.
• Von ca. 7.500 Häftlingen an Bord überlebten nur etwa 350–500.
