Hi everyone, I’m Mishka, a third year imunology student at the University of Glasgow. In this video, I’ll be talking about average monthly expenses as a student living in Glasgow. Just a quick note, the costs mentioned in the video are just based on what me and my friends usually spend each month. Everyone’s budget might be a bit different. The major expenditure is going to be your rent, which can vary from anywhere between £500 a month to £700 a month depending on factors such as the type of flat you’re living in, its location, the number of people you share the flat with, and so on. The university offers several student accommodation options, some of which are even catered. There are also private student hall options provided by organizations such as Amber Student, etc. These are not associated with the university, but many students live here. Both university and private student halls options cover your Wi-Fi and electricity bills in the rent. You can also choose to rent a private flat, but these don’t usually cover your bills in the rent. Websites such as Right Move and Zukla are great places to look for flats. Let’s say an average of £600 a month for rent. Next up, we have utilities such as electricity, Wi-Fi, and gas bills. You can expect to pay around £60 to £80 per month depending on your energy supplier or provider. Some companies offer student deals, so make sure to do your research. Let’s take £70 as a monthly average. Next up, we have food and groceries. Now, this would vary for each individual and would also depend on the stores you shop from. On average, you can expect to spend about £80 a month on groceries. One of the best parts about living in Scotland is free bus travel for everyone under 22 years of age. However, if you’re older than this or live further away from the university, your travel costs can add up depending on your mode of transportation. You can get a rail card or smart card to save money on your train or subway tickets, respectively. On average, you would spend about £40 a month on travel. Finally, miscellaneous costs such as eating out, partying during weekends, or shopping can also cost you a lot of money. I personally don’t drink or smoke, which saves me a lot of money. But depending on your lifestyle, you can expect to spend anywhere from £50 a month to £150 each month on miscellaneous activities. Let’s take £100 as an average. This brings our total average monthly expenses to £890 a month. Now, this can be quite expensive, but there are certain ways you can save some money. Apps such as Uni Days and Student Beans offer discounts to students at various stores, cafes, and restaurants. Tesco also offers a club card using which you can get some really good discounts on groceries and save some money. Not only Tesco, but almost all stores offer some kind of deals on groceries and other household items. Pretty much all places on Buyers Road offer student deals and discounts. Sometimes all you need to do is ask. I hope this video was helpful and gave you a rough estimate of how much you can expect to spend. Thanks for watching. Bye.
