🌍✨ Dear Fellow Walkers!!! 👋🚶♂️🚶♀️ We are incredibly happy 😄🎉 to invite you today on a walk through the truly Most Famous Medieval Fortress and City 🏰🛡️ in France… – Carcassonne✨ !!! Carcassonne is located in the Occitanie region of southern France 🌄, near the Aude River. The medieval citadel, known as the Cité de Carcassonne 🏰, dates back to the Gallo-Roman period and was rebuilt in the 12th century. Its double walls, 52 towers, and fortified gates 🛡️ made it one of the strongest defensive cities in medieval Europe. Carcassonne has over 2,500 years of history 📜 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🌍. Carcassonne traces its name back to Antiquity🏺, around the 6th century BС. From a roman oppidum called Carsac. In the 2nd century BC, the Romans fortified the site 🛡️, which then took the name Carcaso. The city was integrated into the Roman colony of Narbonnaise 🏛️. In the last quarter of the 1st century BC 📜, it became the chief town of the Julia Carcaso colony. After the fall of the Roman Empire 🦅, Carcaso, later known as Carcasona, was held by the Visigoths (460–725) ⚔️, then conquered by the Saracens 🌙, and later taken by Pepin the Short in 759 👑. 🏰 In the 11th and 12th centuries, the powerful Trencavel dynasty ruled here. The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire was built in 1096, and the Comtal Castle in 1130 ⛪. Carcassonne also became a stronghold of Catharism ✝️. ✝️ In 1209, during the Albigensian Crusade, the city was besieged by Crusaders ⚔️. Viscount Trencavel was imprisoned and died in captivity, and Carcassonne became a royal possession of France. 🛡️ King Louis IX and later Philip the Bold reinforced the fortifications, adding a second wall 🔰. The city became a strategic stronghold on the French–Aragon border, and it was never taken during the Hundred Years’ War 🏰. 📉 After the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, Carcassonne lost its military importance 📜. The citadel was gradually abandoned and turned into a poor weaving district 🧵. 🛠️ In the 19th century, architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc undertook a major restoration 🏗️. Though controversial, his work saved Carcassonne from ruin. 🌍 In 1997, the Cité de Carcassonne was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site ✨. Today, it welcomes more than 2 million visitors every year 👣🎒. 🏰 Entrance to the Château Comtal 🚶♀️Rue Viollet le Duc 🚶♀️ ⛲ Place du Grand Puits ⛲ 🚶♀️Rue Adélaïde de Toulouse 🚶♀️ 🏰 Château Comtal 🏰 🏘️ Panoramic view of the Carcassonne city 🏘️ 🚶♀️Rue da la Porte d’Aude 🚶♀️ 🚶♀️ Rue Saint Louis 🚶♀️ 🏛️ Place Auguste Pierre Pont 🏛️ ⛪ Basilique Saint-Nazaire ✨ 🏗️ Built between the 11th and 14th centuries 📜 🪟 Famous for its stunning stained-glass windows 🪟 🙏 Blessed by Pope Urban II in 1096 ✝️ 🚶♀️Rue du Plo🚶♀️ ⚔️ Medieval Camp 🔨 ⛺ The Medieval Camp recreates daily life of the Middle Ages 🛡️ 🏹 Craftsmen show medieval skills like blacksmithing and archery 🔨 🌿 Place Marcou 🌿 🚶♀️Rue Saint-Sernin🚶♀️ 🚶♀️Rue du Grand Puits 🚶♀️ 🗝️ Exit by the Porte Narbonnaise 🏰 🏰 We’ve finished our walk through the Citadel, 🏘️ and now we’ll stroll through the charming streets of Carcassonne city 🚶♂️ ⛲ Place Carnot ⛲ 🚶♂️Rue de Verdun 🚶♂️ 🚶♂️Rue Courtejaire🚶♂️ 🏛️ The old City Hall of Carcassonne 🕰️ 🛡️ Portail des Jacobins 🛡️ 🏛️ Place du Générale de Gaulle 🏛️ ⛪ Cathédrale Saint-Michel ⛪ Construction began in 1247 under King Louis IX to replace a previous sanctuary destroyed during the city’s siege. The cathedral was expanded in 1283 to accommodate the growing population. Elevated to cathedral status in 1803, Saint-Michel replaced the Basilica of Saints Nazaire and Celse as the episcopal seat. The cathedral underwent significant restoration after a fire in 1849, with architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc overseeing the work. The cathedral’s interior retains a 14th-century stained-glass choir screen, Today, Cathédrale Saint-Michel continues to serve as a place of worship and a historical monument in Carcassonne. 🚶♂️Rue Dr Albert Tomey🚶♂️ ⛪ Église Saint-Vincent de Carcassonne ⛪ Construction began in 1240, replacing an earlier sanctuary destroyed during the city’s siege. Inside, 15th-century stained glass and 17th-century paintings adorn the walls, showcasing religious art. The octagonal bell tower rises 54m, offering panoramic views of Carcassonne after climbing 232 steps. Back to the Place Carnot 🏛️ 🚶♂️ Rue de Verdun 🚶♂️ 🎨 The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne 🖼️ 🏛️ Established in 1836, it’s housed in the historic former Présidial building 🏰 with a façade completed in 1900. 🎨 Its collection features European paintings 🖌️ from the 17th–19th centuries, including works by Chardin, Rigaud, Van Goyen, Teniers, Corot, Courbet, and Marquet. 🏺 The museum also showcases ceramics 🍶, faïences, and porcelains from Moustiers, Marseille, and Toulouse. 🌳 Square Gambetta 🌳 Main facede of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne 🚶♂️ Boulevard Camille Pelletan 🚶♂️ 🚶♂️ Rue Georges Brassens 🚶♂️ 🏰 Pont Vieux 🏰 The Pont Vieux, or Old Bridge, was constructed in the early 14th century, with completion around 1320. 🌉 Spanning 225 meters over the Aude River, it features twelve pointed arches and was originally the sole pedestrian link between the Bastide Saint-Louis and the medieval Cité. 🚶♂️ Rue Trivalle 🚶♂️ 🚶♂️Rue Gustave Nadaud 🚶♂️
