If you ask them what their loved ones do in the UK, they often say that they are taxi drivers. Hardworking taxi drivers are supporting thousands of families in Pakistan. For decades, Pakistani taxi drivers have been the pillar of transport in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester. But behind this steering is a tale of sacrifice and struggle that very few people know about. Today, Vox Pakistan will show you the untold story of Pakistani taxi drivers of Bartania. The Pakistanis who came to the UK in the 70s, 80s and 90s had only one aim. To fulfill the basic needs of their families. Without a degree and without any thought, taxi driving was considered the easiest way. It was expected that there would be good earnings. There would be control over time and the family in Pakistan could be helped. [Music] But the reality was different. Long working hours were less than forbidden and there was pressure to fulfill demands all the time . For many people, taxi became not just a vehicle but the thread of life. Pakistani taxi drivers face many problems on a daily basis. They own large cars, drive for 12 to 14 hours a day, earn little and have high expenses. Fuel licensing fees and vehicle repairs eat up income. Conditions are dangerous. They have to deal with drunk or rude passengers late at night. There are also domestic pressures. Families in Pakistan think that money is easy to get abroad . But the reality is completely opposite. Their lives go by in a single cycle. Drive, earn money, send it back and then start driving again. The hardest part is not just the work but the loneliness. Most Pakistani drivers live away from their families. They miss weddings, funerals and even their children’s childhood. The constant pressure and sitting and driving day and night affects their mental and physical health. Yet when they send money to Pakistan, they think they are living a comfortable life in the UK. But the reality is completely different. In the past years, this journey has become more difficult. Uber and app-based services have increased competition. Earnings have decreased, while costs have increased. Older drivers find it difficult to adopt new technology. Young drivers are also facing an uncertain future. The golden days of taxi driving are over. But most Pakistanis have no choice, no option other than this. Pakistani taxi drivers in Bartania are not just drivers. They are fathers, brothers, support who bear the burden of two worlds. Survival in Bartania and responsibility in Pakistan. Next time when you sit in a taxi in London or Birmingham, remember that there is also a story of sacrifice behind the steering.
