The image of the crocodile has become negative for us Filipinos. Just like in the game of basketball where it’s the nickname used to players who seem to have no teammate when they play. Now the word “crocodile” is popular again because of greedy and extremely corrupt politicians and government contractors. But despite this, the iconic brand Lacoste, known for its crocodile logo, is still popular among us . And if you’re also one of those wondering why the crocodile became its logo? That’s what we’re going to talk about in this video, guys. We will explore the history of Lacoste and the things you should know about it. But before we start, I invite you to subscribe if you are new to my channel and you like this kind of content. The Lacoste story begins with tennis player, inventor and businessman René Lacoste who was born on July 2, 1904 in Paris, France. Lascoste came from a rich family. His father, Jean-Jules Lacoste, was a successful businessman with a company that made cars. Like his father who was a former rowing champion, Lacoste also loved sports. At the age of 14, his interest in tennis began when his mother, Jeanne-Marie Magdeleine, gave him a tennis racket. And since then he has been obsessed with it. He was so fascinated that he decided to make it a career. From the beginning, his father was against Lacoste’s decision because he planned to enroll him in a prestigious engineering school in France to help in their business. Another thing is that his father saw that his son was far behind the great tennis players of those days. But the father also saw how much Lacoste loved the sport and how determined he was to improve himself. So in the end he supported his son but on the condition that within five years he should become a world champion because if not he will enroll him in engineering school. In response to his father’s challenge, Lacoste dedicated himself to intense tennis training. He did not give up despite early setbacks such as losing in the first round of Wimbledon in 1922. He trained even harder to get better until he gradually became known as one of the best young players in France. In 1923 at the age of 19, Lacoste already got one of the most coveted by professional tennis players. He was one of those chosen to play on the French national team in the biggest tennis team competition, the Davis Cup. His team included the great tennis players of that time like Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon and Henri Cochet. The four became known as “The Four Musketeers” who dominated the world of tennis from the 1920s to the early 1930s. During these periods the four won 18 Grand Slam singles and 13 Grand slam doubles. The Four Musketeers also led France to six consecutive wins in the Davis Cup from 1927 to 1932. These were the times when the Davis Cup was almost as popular as the FIFA World Cup today. Although René Lacoste was the youngest of The Four Musketeers, many say he was the best of the group. He was the number one tennis player in the world in 1926 and 1927. Throughout his career he won seven Grand Slam singles and three Grand Slam doubles. He won the Davis Cup in 1927 and 1928 and also won a bronze medal in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Not even blessed with superstar-like athletic talent like other great tennis players. Lacoste became a world champion through determination, training, strengthening his body and patiently journaling every opponent he faced. But aside from being part of The Four Musketeers, René Lacoste was also known for his famous nickname as “The Crocodile.” René Lacoste was nicknamed “The Crocodile” by tennis fans. According to stories, he got this nickname because of his determination on the court like a crocodile that never gives up its prey. But according to Lacoste’s own son, it started because of a bet. In 1923, while Lacoste’s team was in America, they often toured the places they visited. One day while Lacoste was with their Davis Cup team captain and coach, Allan Muhr, they wandered the shopping district of Boston. One of the places they went to was a luxury luggage store. Here Lacoste found a unique suitcase made of crocodile skin. France doesn’t have it and that’s the only time he’s seen that kind of suitcase. He called his captain and said with a smile that if he won he should buy him that kind of suitcase. His captain agreed and that’s when the bet between the two started. Unfortunately, Lacoste lost his match. But he impressed those who watched him, especially sportswriters in America because of his determination on the court. A sportswriter named George Carens was the first to call him “The Crocodile” after hearing the story about the bet between Lacoste and his captain. The writer thought that apart from the bet, Lacoste’s nickname “The Crocodile” also fits him because of his strong grip on the racket like a crocodile’s teeth. And like a crocodile, he slowly devour his opponents on the court. So even though he lost the bet, Lacoste returned home to France with the nickname “The Crocodile.” And in the years that followed, Lacoste and The Four Musketeers dominated the world of tennis and people got used to calling him “The Crocodile.” Lacoste embraced the nickname that he did not think that apart from his success in tennis will also brought him success in business. Lacoste liked and embraced his nickname “The Crocodile.” In fact he stood by it and even made it his personal brand. He had friend and designer Robert George create a crocodile design that he sewed onto the jacket he used when he came to court. Lacoste’s first crocodile design was more detailed than the simpler logos we see on the brand today. And did you guys know that Lacoste also invented the modern polo shirt. Lacoste has always been uncomfortable with their tennis uniform of a white long sleeve shirt with long pants. If you look at it, it seems like it’s really hard to move in that kind of clothing, especially when the players are running to chase the tennis ball. The other players roll up their sleeves to make it more comfortable and move properly. Lacoste thought of cutting and making the sleeves of his uniform shorter so that he would be more comfortable and able to move properly. At the 1926 US Open, Lacoste first wore the very first version of his tennis shirt. This helped him last longer in the then hot American weather. Although the clothing did not comply with the regulation, Lacoste was very happy with the result of his experiment because apart from looking better, he became faster on the court because of his comfortable clothes. Lacoste soon introduced short-sleeved tennis shirts with only three buttons on the top and made of a light and comfortable fabric they called “Petit Pique.” So apart from his personal brand crocodile, Lacoste was also known as the inventor of the tennis shirt or what we know today as the polo shirt. It wasn’t long before many players imitated him and wore tennis uniforms with short sleeves. In 1929 at the young age of 25 Lacoste was forced to retire from tennis due to health problems. But he didn’t completely abandon the sports he loved. He tried to make a comeback but lost the French Open in 1932. He was also the non-playing team captain of France’s Davis Cup team in 1932 and 1933. And even though he was no longer active in tennis he still thought of ways to contribute to it such as inventing tennis equipment and creating a sportswear brand. After finally retiring in the early 1930s, René Lacoste was approached by André Gillier, owner of France’s leading knitwear company. The businessman offered him to start a company that would make Lacoste’s fashionable tennis shirts with its famous crocodile logo on the chest. In 1933 the two founded La Société Chemise Lacoste or better known today as Lacoste. According to the company they were the first to put a brand on the outside of a clothing. Lacoste quickly rose to fame as a sportswear brand. But René Lacoste wasn’t content with just making great products. He saw the brand’s potential for global expansion. In the 1950s Lacoste products began to be exported to other parts of the world. But they failed to get a license in the US to sell under the Lacoste brand. So in 1950 they partnered with the US company IZOD and created the sub-brand Izod Lacoste. Izod Lacoste initially failed in the US due to its price of $8 which is now the equivalent of $107. Americans are not impressed with an expensive polo shirt with a small crocodile logo on the chest. This changed when IZOD chairman Vincent DePaul Draddy thought of giving away Izod Lacoste polo shirts to his famous friends such as John F. Kennedy, President Eisenhower and Bing Crosby. And it didn’t take long for the brand to suddenly become popular in American department stores. Although Izod and Lacoste share the same branding, the polo shirt is better known in the US as Izod. So there was confusion because others thought that the famous crocodile logo was from Izod. Izod Lacoste became popular in America in the 1970s to 1980s. Due to the popularity of the brand, Le Tigre Clothing was founded in 1977 to compete with Izod Lacoste. Le Tigre products are the same as Izod Lacoste. They just replaced the famous crocodile logo with their tiger logo. In 1993 the Izod and Lacoste partnership ended when Lacoste acquired the exclusive rights to distribute in the US under its own brand. So since then Izod Lacoste has disappeared and the brand has become known in America as Lacoste. Over the years there have been more and more imitators of the iconic Lacoste logo. Various brands and designers have also put animals on their polo shirts. There’s the Ralph Lauren’s horse, the Tommy Bahama’s marlin, the American Eagle’s eagle and the Chinese brand Crocodile itself. This is just proof of how much influence Lacoste has had in the fashion industry, especially when it comes to polo shirts. Apart from the modern polo shirt, René Lacoste is also known for his other inventions. More than 30 patents are named after him. Some of his famous inventions are the first tennis ball machine in 1928 and the first metal tennis racket in 1957. In 1930 Lacoste married French golf champion Simone de la Chaume. They had three children, Bernard, Michel and Catherine. In 1964 the management of Lacoste went to Bernard. Under him the company became better known as a global brand. He introduced colored polo shirts and launched Lacoste’s women’s line. Bernard died in 2006 and was succeeded by his brother Michel Lacoste. Lacoste’s only daughter, Catherine, is also a champion golfer like her mother. But unfortunately the Lacoste family no longer owns the company after it was sold to the holding company Maus Frères in 2012. Today Lacoste products are not just polo shirts. It also has shoes, eyewears, bags, underwear, perfumes, towels and watches. Here in the Philippines, the company Rustans brought Lacoste back in the 1970s. And like in the US, the brand also became popular in the country in the 1970s and 1980s. Although expensive, Lacoste is one of the most well-known brands here. According to Lacoste Philippines, 98 percent of Filipinos are familiar with the brand. I know I had some Lacoste polo shirts. And I’m sure it’s not original because we can’t afford the price and my mother only buys clothes in Divisoria. But still, at a young age, I was already familiar with the famous Lacoste crocodile. How about you guys, have you ever worn Lacoste clothes? Other than clothes, what are your favorite Lacoste products? Please share in the comment section below. To further strengthen the branding, Lacoste hired famous brand ambassadors such as tennis superstars Novak Djokovic in 2017, Daniil Medvedev in 2019 and the French actor Pierre Niney in 2024. René Lacoste died in 1996 at the age of 92. But until now his brand is still alive and celabrated which has been a testament to his skill as a tennis player, inventor and businessman. Who would have thought that the crocodile logo that started with just a bet is now an iconic brand worth billions of dollars. Thank you very much for joining us until the end of the video, guys.
