Hello, my name is John. Welcome to the Cyclist Network. On this episode, I’m traveling to El Camino de Santiago. [Music] I’m flying from Los Angeles, California to Bordeaux, France. It’s about a 10-hour flight. I reserved a midsize SUV. It’s big enough to carry my bike case. [Music] The drive from Bordeaux to St. John Pier deport. It’s 146 mi and it takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Here’s the route profile. You will ride through four autonomous communities. Navara, Larioa, Castillia Leon, and Galysia. I would recommend downloading the Buen Camino app. You can find it at the app store. It has very helpful information. [Music] Having good maps is essential. You can download Google offline maps. [Music] And if you’re using a bike computer, you can install European maps. St. Jean Pier deport is one of the most beautiful villages in France and it’s a start town of El Camino Frances. [Music] [Music] Delicious pre-right dinner. I’m having shrimp with pasta. The pilgrim information office is located at 39 Ru de Citadel. That’s where you’ll pick up your passport and your shell. You will get your first passport stamp here. The ride from St. Jean Pier the port to Pamplona was 47 mi with 6,100 ft of elevation gain. The first climb is an added category climb and as the French call it category [Music] choosing the right bike setup and gear is very important. You can see my bike setup and gear options on my channel. Love you. Love you too. Careful. Bye. Bye. It’s a beautiful day for a bike ride. Let’s ride. I’m riding to the Notam gate. It’s the starting point for the Camino Frances. It’s a cool spring day. It’s 55° F. It’s May 26th. The ride of 500 miles starts with one pedal stroke. I will be riding the Napoleon route. It’s the traditional more challenging route across the Pyrenees for the Camino Frances Pen Camino. I’m riding up the Rud Espña. Beautiful cobblestone street. Voila. My ticket is off. Keep an eye out for direction signs on the side of the road. These trucks have some bad exhaust. Uh 4% so far. 9% 10 11 Yeah, you got to be careful here at the beginning not to blow it up. 15% It starts to hurt. 17%. Welcome to the Camino. Like right away, man. I went up to 18%. Catch my breath. I just puts you right in the red right away. All right, that’s a start. There you go. You got these signs on the poles here telling you where you’re at. How much farther? I don’t know. This thing’s Oh, isn’t that beautiful? But there it is. Look at that beauty. I guess I’m going to the top of that. Man, there’s a refuge or the the hostiles the Haven’t seen pedaginos today. I think they got an early start, but I think I’ll catch up to them. I don’t like this downhill here. You know that what that means? I just I’m losing all that altitude I just gained. But it is cooling me down a little bit cuz I was starting to steam up there. You just keep following the signs. [Music] Shine my camino. All right. A little steep here. Amazing view as you can see. See if I can get on this trail. Here we go. And now we go up. You can ride the pave road on the right. It meets up with the trail farther up the hill. So far 13% grade raspberry thorns everywhere. Just trying to maintain grip, keep grip on that back tire. It’s better on grass than it is on the dirt. Just got to sit back in your seat. Put some weight. on that back tire. Looks like there’s a muddy spot here. Like a river, like a little stream here. man. These cycling shoes are not made for walking. So, got to get back on the bike. Well, there is a street side to this, like a paved road. I’m sure it’s a little bit easier than this one. All right, let’s try it again. 21% right here. Look at this, man. Beautiful scenery. But you’re having a heart attack. All right. Just walk it up a little more. Come on. Anybody wants to try this on a bike at least? Look at this. It’s just loose rocks. That’s a nice hike. So that’s what it looks like. I would not recommend coming this way. Stay on the road. 16% again 18% I’ve reached the refuge of Orison. You can take a break here and refill your water bottles. Guess I didn’t stand here. Hello. All right. Here’s the water stops. Maybe you see them. They’re out there. Oh, the sheep. Yeah, a little kind of cloudy. [Music] The Virgin of Orson statue is a short walk from the main road. [Music] I think we’re going off-roading here. Mile 10. Yeah. Distance 10.3 mi. Elevation 4,31 ft. This is where the road pave road splits. And there’s the dirt road for [Music] All right. Not the ideal weather, but I’m getting a pretty pretty good view of this beautiful forest. Here are the markers throughout the ride. White and red. Watch for the slugs. These trees are start go over the route. There are the arrows. really loose. Here’s the border. Spain of France. I don’t eat it here. Now I’m in France. Now I’m in Spain. Not quick. Look at these markers. Nevada Here’s where the descent begins. All right. looks a little more manageable. It’s kind of an eerie day. It’s kind of cool. kind. When you come across pedagogos, use your bike bail and slowly ride by them. Turn your right. Turn your right. Come here. The road surface is constantly changing. Be cautious in these sections. So up we go. Cloudy behind me. See if we can get here. side this a little bit this way. All right, go that way. Take your time on the descent. It’s very steep and technical. Maybe don’t crash. definitely deep pocket. Come through these sections, man. You’re better off walking it. Hola. that. Here you go, buddy. I reached the Roses Vayas Monastery. It has an Alber and a restaurant. Malaysia. America. California say Here’s the famous Santiago de Compostella sign just past the monastery. [Music] You will ride through many beautiful villages. [Music] [Music] [Music] I finally reached Pamplona. It’s been an incredible bike ride. I will be staying at the Euro Stars Hotel. It’s a mile away from the city center. That doesn’t help. I will spend an extra day here for sightseeing and making new friends. Would you recommend wider tires?
Thinking of riding from Frankfurt across France to the start.
Any thoughts post ride about your tires and gearing?
Hey John, thank you so much for preparing this video account of your trip from Saint Jean to Pamplona. I plan on riding the El Camino but my only concern is the first leg of the trip. Your content provided me with many answers, the grade (up and down) is a concern along with the gear particularly the tyre's. Looks like there is a road option to avoid much of the hikers route (and steep grade) which might be a better choice for me – please provide any details if you have it. Have fun and Buen Camino.
