so back on the bridge today because I quite like this bridge day four we took off from bouro and we rode the garia pass now the garia pass is on the on the maps it said about 24K from town not too bad only 12 of that was the climb even better what they didn’t tell us was as soon as you step out the front door it starts the 12ks is to get to the climb was about 5 to 6% yeah we went hard yeah we’re in the Box but it was beautiful such a magical climb today’s video is about the climb up the garia pass to the top on the higher bike I was on which is altegra 6600 maybe 67 it’ be 6600 cuz it had the cable wire the coat hangers on the top so I had a bit of trouble with the element Mount dropped down 2.5 mil hex key hard to find so the element was in the back pocket for all of the ride um at the very top I did a review just a quick review of my higher bike so enjoy that there was cows with bells not guns and what else happened on today and the descending with switch brakes my God that’s a different experience so look I’m really looking forward to coming back one day and riding it with my bike with my brakes it might be backwards to everyone else but in Australia we run left brake back right brake front different to Europe and the other side of the road wasn’t too bad it’s just picking the lines but again having switch brakes and picking lines on the other side of the road no Mojo there with descending I love a good descent I love bombing a descent you’ve seen the video on that just no Mojo but it was all about enjoying the up and the views the views were amazing we have nothing like this in Australia I was saying to the guys there’s probably two hairpins in Victoria that people get 180° hair pins you come around people stand in the corner and take a photo of that if you know the one up in Mount Buffalo just as you drop into the ski Village there the one over in South Australia I think everyone takes a photo of is the up the cork screw through there’s one corner there up these climbs in Italy about every corner is exactly the same as that so these guys have thousands of these hair pins which are brilliant so enjoy today’s views and we’ll see you [Music] [Music] tomorrow [Music] so day one in Boro my voice is still gone but we’ll uh we’ll carry on we’ve got some climbs plann this morning we’ve had some good coffee we shall be rolling in about an hour or so hopefully I can get some good footage from the bike I’ve got no bike mounts the bike is absolutely horrific no idea what brand it is I think it’s got 10 speeds about seven of those work but we’ll get to the top all right let’s [Music] ride morning boys and we’re rolling [Music] good for climbing we our first Cobble climb coming up yeah the views legs feel good heart like one so that was our blow the cobwebs out open up the [Music] [Applause] [Music] pipes the hurt is on pretty early up the climb [Music] so going to the front see if we can slow the pace down a little bit [Music] [Applause] [Music] brutal this there little a bad [Music] view under the cobbles [Applause] [Music] The Climb started off quite easy and then right at the top when you sort of wanted to switch off and just uh tick at home it bang it went right up I was lights out Steve came back to my wheel Matt’s way up the road super strong and uh we got it done so I think it was about 24K 25 maybe 26 the Garment oh sorry the the mount I can’t find a tool to get the Mount of my bike but we s I’m sure there’s a cyclist here with one of these so we’ll sort it out it’s a glacia behind me there’s a first none of those on Mount [Music] hoam [Music] scenery that I’ve just never ever ridden through before just amazing absolutely amazing I mean have a have a look at this a lot of good photo on the way down so I think I’ll just take my time and enjoy the day oh by the way the coffe is fantastic wow just wow this is awesome so I thought I’d do a steed review while I was up here before I got down let’s have a look at this absolute monster of a bike I’ll run you through the specs so as you can see I’ve left it in the little ring here to show it the respect it deserves it’s Shimano malgra um I’ve also got mismatching drink bottles as well now if I had to match the drink bottles it would cost probably twice as much as the bike itself so I’ve got a uh a freebie drink bottle here and uh signed by Tommy vuler yesterday at the eurobike so thanks Tommy I was going to put that on the Shelf but look function wins Tommy so sorry mate you’re uh you’re going to be in the washing machine history book soon but I really appreciate your uh your support there Tommy tongue’s out buddy now for the saddle here we’ve got some sort of I think it’s the couch armchair style I don’t know what that’s for probably oy straps or something so if you’re getting uh going up a hill a bit too fast someone can oy strap on the back must be an Italian thing uh look I’ve got a bike computer here but it reads so out that I’ve actually spun it around because this is doubling up the reading or so so this little bike computer I’ve spun it out of the way but the old might be able to dry some washing on these uh cables later on I hang my uh jerseys and nicks off those what else can I tell you about the bike not a lot I had to pick the glass out of the tires when I got it from the shop few chunks of glass in there and uh it’s got some fulcrum Wheels with not a lot of life left in them vbt V VL V L beat no idea no idea got some shim beautiful Shimano pedals definitely not carbon they had a few uh P scrapes good stuff and uh that’s about it so there we go quick rundown I think the handlebars are about 48 CM wide so I’m driving the bus all day but better than nothing anyway oh it was 80 for two days I think I got got ripped off there’s a cow down there another one another one cha spotting I think they live in that house there oh he’s a bit angry oh more over here the guys have gone and done the other side there’s no way in hell I’m ready to go do that so I’ve had I think it was about an hour and a half climbing with views that you just cannot believe look at that that’s just a glacier um another one there and more snowcapped Mountains out the back here I think we’ve picked a good time of year too I couldn’t imagine this in winter this would be a a very very different landscape in winter but today it’s just spectacular there’s a few gray clouds coming up over here I’ve got to go down that way to get back to where we are but it’s going to be 25ks straight down I’ve got switch brakes I’m on the wrong side of the road the element the waho element Mount that I’ve got has like bent itself we haven’t done it up tight enough so it’s bent itself down so I can’t use that it’s in the back pocket again same as the way up I had in the back pocket on the way up we tried to put it on at the top but we didn’t tighten it up and it’s uh it’s fallen down so I can’t read the uh the element of the maps but we right on fi Merk style let’s [Music] go not even halfway down I’ve stopped a few times already to take in the view the cows with the cow bells they’re [Music] hilarious I just hit a pothole in the dark tunnel back there I think the bike’s held up but I may have broken both my wrists holy that was a big hole I’ve hit killing me Ral [Music] bikes [Music] [Music] [Music] so today was Romeo du Gia amazing views out through here and through here on the way down so out of all these it’s only number two tick off maybe that tomorrow lunch some of the places around here have the most magnificent Gardens and they’re really really well maintained have a look at this one now I know good edging when I see it and that’s some good [Music] edging [Music]

Nice beaver Shane! (Flying High movie reference)
Another good one Mr Lama!
in Australia we run the brakes the wrong way. the frames are actually made to have them the other way.
I would be scared to ride 73 km/h on a rented bike that is in this condition. I have no confidence in any other than my equipment 🙂
Great video, you look very happy tp get the opportunity to ride in this scenery, maybe you can come back during the worst days of Australian winter to do some more riding in Europe.
Very cool vid with some good edging 😉
Italy looks amazing from your perspective! So jelly.
epic ride shane. awesssssssssssome!
just got back from Bali and had a mountain bike with brakes like that. made it interesting.
Nice! I run my bikes the "wrong way" around too 😉 I thought the bike wasn't bad for a rental to be honest. You did well on that side of the road, and looking over the other shoulder and putting the other foot on the ground at lights also feels very strange at first.
You and the rest of the herd absolutely must get back there Shane. Not to poo-poo that climb, but if you think that was spectacular scenery, you should see some of the others! My favourite areas are the lakes around Como, not huge climbs, but lumpy and good training. Otherwise in the Dolomites, maybe not the longest climbs in Europe, but will sort anyone out just the same, and are simply stunning. Riding in Italy is fantastic, and not just at the top of the country. May is perfect … and it's the Giro 😉

I really love your videos and channel, Shane, but that review bit on the rental bike…you kind of come off as a bit elitist. Not everyone that loves to cycle can afford the newest tech year on year. My best bike still has "coat hangers", and I build and maintain stuff with waaay lower components than you were just complaining about. Just a bit of perspective to consider from an average punter.
Good vid. Maybe a future video on what to bring for a bike trip sans your own bike. Min: shoes, Kit, helmet. Your own pedals? Saddle? Tool kit with a 2.5 mm?! Lol
I'm guessing you haven't ridden up Mt Wellington in Hobart. Chris Froome rode it last year with Richie Porte and said it was as good as most European climbs. For the last 5-10 km, you're riding along the edge of the mountain contours with spectacular views.
Keep up the good work. Loving the vids!
Here in the US we also run back brake on right, front brake on left.
Hi Shane – what hotel were you staying at ? Noticed at the 14 min 29 sec mark you had a nice storage room with maps on the wall of the climbs. Paul
I guess in winter you'd be there with Von snowboarding?
Maybe the next trip a couples trip with Fergal and Hannah? Shane and Von on the climbs and fergal and Hannah on the trails?
Pretty turned off by the typical elite roadie review of the rental bike and some of the footage and comments in the last videos.
I'm stuck riding my MTB on the road or trails. Hopefully my feet will be healed up and I can get back on the bike soon. Last ride I was only 10 miles and barely could walk for a few days.
Bet Mike Cotty would be proud of your cow spotting!
Great video Shane!
Nice sarcastic bike review, looks like a monster. 😛
Epic footage, keep it up. Looking forward to seeing some more of the real Giro.
People do go on about Stelvio and don't get me wrong it's a great climb but Gavia is just beautiful and I can see Shane that you went through pretty much the same emotions I did five years ago to the week when I rode it solo from Bormio. There's also far less traffic on Gavia which helps. There's one point about half way up where you can see the road infront of you going up at 10% and your realise oh crap that's the road. Worth the effort though.
In terms of hire bikes the hotel I stayed at had a fleet of Pinarellos so you missed a treat on that front. I had my own bike their though so no backward brake issues! They did lend me a Campag wheel with more teeth though for Mortirolo. My 25 was not big enough.
Awesome video Shane – brought back some great memories.
some cracking views there Shane. Nice beaver!
Great video! How is the last part made (where it shows details about your ride and the map) ?
Nice one!
👍👍
sweet not hilarious
When mark had his crash there were people saying "how stupid could you be to drive on the wrong side of the road".
It is not easy if you are used to drive on the other side of the road. And I never thought about about the switched brakes. Guess it would be right if you go to the United Kingdom.
Good to see you enjoyed your ride in Italy.
jesus christ that chemtrails are everywhere ….
when you were "reviewing" the bike initially i thought that you were being harsh, then you mentioned the cost. it would surely have been cheaper to bring your bike as an extra luggage item no?
my winter bike runs front brake on the right an rear on the left however, the summer bike is opposite. needless to say changing over after months of is always a fun surprise.
You and Andy Hampsten have epic memories of the Gavia
I ride left brake back mate.your bikes weird.greetings from uk
Shane, you'd love riding in the South Island of NZ. We got all sorts 🙂
I would love to see a review of the wahoo elemnt!
that was paving, not cobbles ! lol, great vid's though, top stuff.
Great vid Shane. I was up there last year and agree, it's one of the best. Your video has inspired me to plan for 2017. Thanks!
You've probably answered this a million times, but what is the software you use for the animation of your strava data? It looks great.
Hi Shane.
Love the movie 🙂
Did Stelio and Passo Gavia last year in September on my touring bike while I was touring from Denmark to Rome.
If you ever go to Bormio again, then you might want to consider hotel Funivia. It´s quite the place with free laundry service and fully spec´ed service course.
Cool video Shane, you went up the wrong side though. Still epic.
Want to get rid of my coat hangers! Still, love my bike..
Great video. I know that feeling of being so impressed by the alps although I live here for 5 years now I still get it. What software did you use at the end to show your route on a 3D map?
I won't be around much next year and so far I only do MTB but you could hit me up 2018 to do a longer trip together if you decide to be in the alpine region again.
No hiding your emotions up in the mountains there then Shane.. can't remember last time I saw someone with such a big grin on their face throughout. And a 'wee' cone at the end of the day. Perfic 😉
Right hand – front brake here in UK too.
Those views are amazing!!
How did you do this animation (recap of your ride) at the end ? 15:45
Great vlog Shane. Likewise did Stelvio up over and back from Bormio , Mortirolo and Gavia back to back days, we had snow as it was in September. Awesome part of the world. 👍
Holy hell mate @ 190bpm. My turkey legs run out of juice before I make it to 190.
Recommend doing the Sellaronda loop in the Dolomites. Very scenic.
Why are all the hire bikes rubbish? That would really suck!
Seriously average run down of one of the great climbs
Nice vid , the monument you were next to was the battle of St Mateo ,the glacier.the Madonna on the hill is dedicated to cyclists, they take their cycling seriously here! Next time try it from ponte di legno , it will blow your mind,if you thought the bormio side was great.or you could do a "warm-up" on mortirolo ride the other side to ponte di legno gavia but don't burn your glycogen! The other side has parts like mortirolo but you forget it it's indescribably beautiful and I've done a few hills.
