Welcome to a sunny, very sunny in fact, white haven in Cumbria. And today we are off for another adventure. We are doing the sea to sea. And from what I’ve seen, this does look like an amazing route. So fingers crossed it will live up to the hype. It’s only a three-day earth. But it is a hilly one. So we are going over the hills and the lakes and over the penins. So far we look busted with the weather. I should actually point out we’re not actually officially started yet. We’re actually cycling to White Haven. We’ve hiked out of town because there’s a free car park. Okay, so this should be the official start of where law has it you have to dip your rear wheel in the Irish sea. Watch me fall in the water. And I lower the wheel into the Irish sea. That’s as good as it’s going to get before I fall in there. Okay, we go. Yeah, there’s a sign up here as well. These hills are a bit of a wakeup call. Stunning views. Always the problem with downhill always follows by an uphill. even in granny gear. This is quite steep. Another great view behind me. This is an uphill that keeps on taking. Guarantee it was to drop us off a cliff on the other side. I want to do it all again. I’m naked. Still going. That was nice while it lasted. Yeah. for about two seconds. [Music] So, they’re apparently onroad and off-road sections of the coast to coast. Um, yeah, unless you’re actually riding a mountain bike, which would actually be a really good idea, I think, uh, to do this, them doing the off-road. Not great on, uh, vintage touring bikes. So I survived Kzik just about Lake District on a sunny summer Sunday afternoon. A gate halfway up a hill. Oh, not fun. Day two heading out of Penri. Wife’s already had an altercation with the van driver. Good start. What a long pull. Another hard day. Where’d this come from? So this is the big hill. 1900T ascent I think or 1900T top I don’t know but uh it is tiring. It’s actually getting a lot colder and windier probably. Progress update. Still going up. Look at these clouds. Hey, this is going to be fun. Too cold to not have a jacket on. Too sweaty to put a jacket on. At least all the cars and vans seem to have found them all. That’s brilliant. All right, let’s slow down some drivers. Oh, okay. All right, giving in. Had to put the jacket on. Visibility is pretty poor. I am aware I’m wearing sunglasses. Oh, great. We reached the top. bit uncool for just coming out of a place called Gargill and nice little village. You turn a corner up to the right. No warning. And it’s just straight up. There’s got to be at least 20%. From nothing. Oh, not what you need just after you’ve eaten your lunch. Don’t think you really get perspective on an Insta 360 without doing some weird zoom out effect, but these little steep bits are insanely steep. Winter conditions can be dangerous. To be fair, the summer conditions ain’t too great at the moment. Steep descent. Descent’s good. Maybe they have sun down there. Look at the beautiful views. It’s worth every second of that climate. As expected, got to the bottom of the hill now. Going back up the next. Actually quite taken back by the uh level of fitness you need for this. I’d say by all accounts the land zone to John Gross route that we did was actually easier even though we were doing longish days. This is uh surprisingly demanding. I’ve already looked at the map which let’s face it is never a good thing. You always know you’re in uh not in the best place when you’re going how many more hills I’ve got to do. Four is the answer. We’re almost in a full white territory. You can just about see the clouds going across. I’m still wearing my sunglasses. These actually give me bad contrast, believe it or not. [Music] attacking the sun obviously because I put myself in full. But so far I managed to use everything that I brought and that means I’m going to need something else or I just packed really really really efficiently. You can never get enough hills. Flies everywhere, even crawling all over the camera. It’s a problem when I get still. up downhill. Big drop here. I’m hoping this is the summit. This isn’t actually technically part of the route, by the way. This is uh just us getting to our accommodation. One hill says carrying camping equipment. So, no doubt this is going to be a steep drop. Morning. This is day three. Not such a nice day today. It is wet. It is rainy. It’s really cold. I don’t have gloves. Wish I’d brought more gear. Never mind. Right, we got this big hill coming up. Don’t think I’m going to film it because the I’d need the 360 and that’s just not going to work in this weather. So, we shall see you on the top of the hills. Today is our wedding anniversary. It’s fair to say one of us ain’t living this one down, are we? Oh dear. All right, so we found the mountain bike trail. It’s a shame we’re not on mountain bikes. All right. Had to resort to walk in bits because this trail is just too hard for these tires. All right, we’re near the summit. See if we can get a railway line. Ah, so it’s one of those uh pulley pulley things. Makes a lot of sense. So this station was used to haul up trucks and lead or and all that kind of jazz. It’s very haunting today. Doesn’t really give me much confidence about the uh fall down the other side. Yeah. I don’t know if I’ve got much enough pad left on the brakes to get down there comfortably. Hey ho. There it is in all its glory. Happy anniversary. Downhill all the way. This ride is definitely out to get us cuz now this is the next section. single rock. Jeez. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Quick blast of rain, but we have sun. Kind of. There wasn’t you there. I promise. Sun. Actual sun. [Music] Sadly, the weather was never in our favor today. Oh, hills. This is rocker beach. So we are going to do the obligatory prop. So there we go. Coast to coast on touring bikes completed. Some may say it’s already wet enough. It wasn’t going to come down. She changed her mind.

  1. It's a shame Hartside was cloudy. The views from there are often spectacular after the long and brutal ascent from Penrith. Definitely need a dinner plate sprocket for that climb.

  2. Great video. Being from the UK but having worked in The Middle East for the last 8 years means I really miss just how green and alive the UK looks.

Your video really does show the green countryside and blue skies so well. Can I ask what camera you use please?

In two weeks time I'm off to cycle around the complete coastline of Sardinia with a friend and I'd love to put a video of your quality on my channel.

Have you been filming long as I just find it all so alien right now?

Once again, great video and channel.
