I ride from Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape, in South Africa.
Luckily, my motor is somehow working again this morning, which allows me to easily climbs the first hill of the day. Sadly, as I reach Calitzdorp, my motor definitely dies.
I stop for a typical lunch of the Karoo before reaching smoothly a farm near Oudtshoorn for this short day on the road. Later on, with my mother, we go to visit the beautiful surroundings of Oudtshoorn by car. We climb the wonderful Swartberg pass in order to quickly visit the beautiful town of Prince Albert, at the edge of the start of the real Karoo.

(Klein Karoo, South Africa) – Morning, my friends, from a beautiful small valley
in the Little Karoo! And today, we’re gonna go
to Oudtshoorn. Very hard to pronounce. I don’t see the link between the letters
and the pronunciation, butβ¦ Yeah, it should be a short day. Just 50… I think about 55 km
with two short, steep climbs. And hopefully, I’ll have
a motor for these climbs because, without the motor, I don’t think I can ride
the tricycle if it’s too steep. Let’s see how it is. Let’s go, guys! Let’s go. I didn’t start the motor yet.
It’s gonna be a surprise down the hill. [FR] See you later! – See you later! – Let’s go! Look at this beautiful valley. And now it’s surprise time. Wow, it started! Let’s see if it lasts
at least for the first 3 km, because the first 3 km is a steep hill. Come on! Come on! Let’s go! The Gamka River that you’ve seen
this morning already. And I might be able
to ride up the steep hill, the first hill,
to reach Calitzdorp! Let’s go, baby! Like in Ronnie’s Sex Shop. – Sorry for the wait!
– It’s okay. – How are you? – Good. How are you?
– Yes, we follow you onβ¦ YouTube. – Oh, yes. Good. – Yes! How are you? – Hello.
Very good! Yeah, yeah. – Yeah, no. So good
to see you. – Yeah, yeah. – In Windhoek, we missed you.
– In Windhoek? Ah, yeah. – Yes, we… Saw you. – Oh, you saw me.
– Yeah, next to the road. But we knew nothing about you. – Ah, okay. And luckily, you meet me,
see me a second time, and you can stop. – Yeah, you must stop at that fruit stall
here. Nice dried fruit. – Where? – It’s just… – In Calitzdorp? – Yeah,
but it’s El Natan. – El Natan? Okay. – Yeah, it’s next to the road.
– Okay. – Yeah, I would like to take a picture. – Yeah, yeah.
No worries, yeah. – Yeah. – Oh, it was… – So you’re now fixed with the battery.
– I got two new batteries in Cape Town. – Okay. – Yeah. They were significantly
more expensive than in Europe. – Oh, I meanβ¦ I understand.
– But it’s normal. It’s dangerous goods. So it’s the price to bring them here. – It’s worthy. Yeah. – But I got two
new ones. – Yeah. – So now, I’ve got… But now, I’ve got problems
with my motor, but… Today it’s working. So far. – Oh, good. Yeah. I’m not good
with selfies, but we can do it. Do you want me
to take it? – Yes, you can. Hello! Thank you! – You’re welcome! – Have
a straight… Now, you’re going to…? – Oudtshoorn, Oudtshoorn.
Oudtshoorn? – Oudtshoorn. – Oudtshoorn, yeah. – Yeah, and then
you also go to the Cango Caves? – Then to the Garden Route
and then towards Lesotho. – Have a nice journey! It’s beautiful…
– Thank you very much! – …here. – Yeah, it’s very beautiful.
I love it here. Yeah. – Yeah. Bye-bye! Great to see you!
– Nice meeting you! Yeah. Have a good day! – Bye! – Bye-bye! Oh man. Even with the assistance,
this climb is hard. And here, we can see Calitzdorp!
We’re done with the first hill. And after Calitzdorp, we’re gonna have
a second one, less steep. Calitzdorp Fruit.
Grapes, peaches, and figs! And a small township. Hello, hello, hello, hello!
– Hi! – Where to? – Hello! A bit of vineβ¦ Some vines.
– Hello. – Hello. Hello! Looks like a small supermarket town.
Hello! Hello! – Hey! – Hopla. Hello! – Hey! – A small dusty supermarket town.
Hello! – Hello, man. Are you okay? – Hello, hello! – Go to Joburg?
– Yeah, yeah, yeah. Joburg. No, I won’t ride there,
but I’m going in that direction. Fancy shop. All those old cars.
Hello! Look at this car behind. That’s it! No more fastness,
no more motor. Let’s see if it restarts.
I highly doubt it. No. Okay, I’m gonna ride a bit
without the motor. Luckily, I could do the first hill
at least with it. – Hello! – Hello! Hello. Hello! Luckily, I have quite a strong tailwind
for today, and it’s a short day, but… Oh man, this is really… It’s very annoying. Oh man, the wind! Hello! – [FR] The motor? – Calitzdorp,
end of story. – Oh, no. Really? – Ah? – Really? – Yeah, yeah. – Hey! – Hello! – How are you? – Good. How are you? – Well. Yes! Yeah, I’ve been watching
you on YouTube the whole time. – Yeah, that’s good. – Well, good
for you. I respect you for what you do. – Thank you! – You always say,
“What the f*/*/*? They’re biting me.” – Can youβ¦ – Yes.
– β¦with me? – Yeah. Yeah, yeah. This is great, eh? – Yeah, it’s great.
Yeah. – He doesn’t know how to… – Yeah, how to take the photo. – Going. – Make sure you have the correct one.
– That’s excellent! Yes. – Awesome! – You made our day, eh? – Ah? – [Both]
You made our day! – Yeah, I imagine. Yeah. – But the wind… The wind is bad. – Yeah,
but it’s good. It’s from the back. – Okay. – It’s sometimes from the side,
but now it’s from the back. So it’s… – Sorry to stop you. – Yeah.
– It’s okay, it’s okay. – You have a… – It’s a short day today. – So where
are you going? – Oudtshoorn. – [Both] Okay. – Yeah. – Great, great,
great. – Not far today. – We’ll follow you. – Thank you! Have a good day! – Yeah! – A nice rest area. And hopefully,
I can get my braai very soon! Rietfontein Ostrich Palace! This is the Karooboom Braai!
Let’s see if I can finally have a braai. Like the classical old car,
a rusty old car. Hello! – Hello! – Do you have food?
– Yeah. – Yeah? Okay. Oh, nice. Do you have a menu or…? – I’m gonna
give you the menu now. – Okay, thank you. Beautiful place. Thank you! – My pleasure. – Can I get a kannaland braai? – Yeah. – So
what is it? We can add a chop for the 35. – Yeah. – It’s a lamb chop? – Yeah,
it’s a lamb chop. – Lamb chop. Okay. I’ll get one chop additionally. – Okay.
But do you want it with…? – With chips. – With chips? Okay. – Yes. – And something
to drink? – Sparkling water? – Yeah. – Yeah. – Okay. – Sparkling water,
please. Thank you! Look at this place. A small bicycle. Beautiful. The old rusty stuff here.
I love the classic old rusty car. Interesting place. Quite remote
and notβ¦ Quite empty. Thank you! – Welcome. Great. Thank you very much!
– Enjoy your food! – Thank you. Some meat, guys. Great.
Look at this beauty. So I asked for an extra lamb chop.
Two lamb chops, one boerewors, and… Oh, that’s a… I didn’t know
what the sosatie was, I think it’s called. What’s this? Mayonnaise, maybe. Yeah. Hopla. Let’s go, guys! Good. Hopla! I was really lucky this morning. The first climb would have been
a nightmare without the motor. Let’s try the lamb chops, guys.
A fatty, fatty lamb. Oh, shit. Ah, it’s all jumping on me.
Some fat and some meat. That’s really good. Let’s try the sosatie. It’s good. A bit with a kind
of wine sauce, maybe. The dog is probably jealous of me. Some good lamb. That’s very good. Let’s try the boerewors,
the best sausage in the world. Oh, yeah. Fantastic! And the sosatie. It’s good. – Is everything all right here?
– It’s very good. – Okay. – Thank you! Good fat lamb. The boerewors is everything
in this region of the world. Bye-bye! – Bye! – Bye-bye. The old voortrekker cart. You can’t imagine
how much I hate this beep. Oh my god, it’s a nightmare. I guess it’s time to go.
It’s getting a bit cloudy this afternoon. Just 26 km left
for a slow afternoon. Let’s go! Let’s go to Oudtshoorn.
26 km to my place to stay. Bye-bye, Karooboom! Crazy, crazy! The feathers of maybe
ostriches. It’s quite funny. My legs are getting used to riding
this thing without the motor, and I feel more comfortable
with it now, but the main issues are… Thank you! He waited patiently for me. Yeah, the two main issues are steep slopes
(I can’t ride them with a full load) and I’m too freaking slow. I just have to accept
being slower, actually, but the problem is I’m just too slow. Way too slow. I mean, at this pace, crossing Africa
would take me five or six years instead
of three or four years. So, it’s definitely not sustainable for me
in the long term not to have a motor. It’s really interesting:
I can really feel my legs getting stronger and stronger,
climb after climb. – Wow! – Hello! – Wow! I just said to my husband,
“There he is!” – Here I am. Yeah. – I followed you from everywhere
to Cape Town. – Awesome. – Yo, man, it’s nice to meet you! – Yo, it’s the mighty man.
– Nice to meet you, too. Yeah. – Where are you off to now?
– Oudtshoorn. – Oh, okay. – Not far from here. Yeah.
– Okay, okay. – Nice! It’s not far. – Nice to meet you. Hello! – Is that…?
Are you gonna sleep over there or…? – Yeah, I’m gonna sleep over there.
Yeah. – Okay. Fantastic! – Oh my god! – And when did you start in Cape Town? – No, I… This is a few months later. – So I restarted. – Yes, yes.
– From Swellendam. – Oh, okay. Okay. – I took a rest already.
I went back to Europe. – Okay. – And I resumed from Swellendam.
– Yes, okay. – Oh my god! – It’s fantastic. I met somebody famous, man!
– Yeah, somehow. – Wow! – Can I have a picture with you?
– Yeah, no worries. Yeah. – Yes! – Here we go now. – Also, one-
to-one. – Yeah, yeah. Okay, sure. – Wow! Good luck to you, man.
– Thank you very much! Yeah. – Are you going back to France now? – Yeah, I’m going back to France
slowly, slowly. Yeah. – Three years. Three years. – Yeah, it’s gonna take me
three or four more years. Yeah. – Yes. Now it’s all up. – Thank you,
brother. – You’re welcome. – It’s all upwards, upwards.
So, it might take a lot… – Yeah. – Okay. Good luck, man! – …longer.
– Thank you! – Yeah. Good luck, man! – But nice to meet you, man! Good luck!
– Nice to meet you, too. Yeah. – Yeah, yes. – I hope you’ll travel safe.
– Hopefully, yeah. So far, it’s fine. Yeah. – I saw it in Ethiopia, and it was bad. – In what? – Ethiopia. – Oh,
Ethiopia was complicated. Yeah. For cyclists, it’s… – Yes, it was bad
for you. – It’s difficult for cyclists. Yeah. – Yes. But safe journey
to you, eh? – But good luck, man! – Thank you very much! Yeah. – It was
nice to meet you. – I’ll pray for you. – Really nice to meet you, man.
– Nice meeting you, too. Yeah. – Thanks, man! – Bye-bye!
– Good luck to you also. Yeah. Bye-bye! – He’s got important…
– She was like, “Yes!” Bye-bye! – Shap shap!
– Nice meeting you! A car cemetery. Interesting. And we passed by our first ostrich farm.
Oudtshoorn is the land of the ostriches. Let’s try the biltong of Ladismith. Let’s see if a biltong-powered bike
works better than a Shimano-powered bike. That’s good! With the fat. That’s so good. Oh, yeah. A big chunk of fat. – Hello! – Hello! – How are you?
– Good. How are you? – Good, man. Where are you going now?
– Oudtshoorn! – Oudtshoorn? – Oudtshoorn, yeah. – Okay!
– Hello! – Hello. – Yeah. – The rain is coming behind there! Just 4 km to go. Hopefully,
I’ll reach before the rain catches me. La Plume, Grundheim. It’s funny:
a French name and a German name. Big sidewind now. A few donkeys. And I think
that there is rain straight ahead as well. There is rain
behind the hill there. 1.2 km. I can see an ostrich farm
in the distance there. And there is an ostrich just here,
and I think we’re staying here. Hello! – How are you? – Ah? – How
are you? – I’m good, I’m good. Sorry? I don’t understand.
– Where do you sleep? And where do you want to go?
– I’m going here. – Okay. These people here.
– Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. – You’re going to a guesthouse?
– Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. – Okay. Good luck! – Thank you! – Good luck.
– Have a good day! – Good day! – Hello! Volgenoeg. I think that’s
where I’m going. Hello! Hello! – Where did you come from now? – Today from… Where were we? Calitzdorp.
Before Calitzdorp. – Okay, not too far. – Yeah, not too far. So it’s the one
I booked on booking.com, right? – Yes. – Okay. There’s also my mother coming,
but she’ll come afterwards. So I guess… – Okay. You can just go straight up.
– I can… Okay, straight up. Okay. Hello! – Well done!
– Thank you! – Okay, wait… – Hopla! – Okay, let me show you… – Okay.
– …where you are. This way. Stand. – Okay, thank you! So I guess
that’s for the gate. – Yeah. – Okay. – When you go out, it opens itself. – And then I need to… Does it
close itself? – Yes. – Okay. – But when you come back,
you must open the gate. – Yeah, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
– Okay? – Okay, perfect. Two beds. Perfect. – Yes. And there’s wifi.
– It’s written here? – Yes. – Okay, perfect. – Yours. But… Yeah. – All good? – It’ll be…
Everything that you need is here. I think I have it. But you’ve got
my number. – Yeah, okay. – If you need something… – Okay.
– …just send me a WhatsApp. – Ask you. Okay, great. Thank you very much!
– Okay, let me just take this one. – Yes. – Are you gonna open for your mom?
– Yeah, I’m gonna open. – Okay. – Yeah, I’m gonna put the bike,
the tricycle here, and… – Yes. – I’m gonna… – Cuz I’m just going
to town quickly. – Okay, no problem. – Okay, thanks! – Thank you!
– Enjoy! – Thank you! – Come! So my tricycle is here.
There is an ostrich there. The same I saw from the road. And the place looks nice. Look,
it’s quite nice. A nice kitchen. A sofa area, but there is
quite an issue for me. There’s a… So there is one room here and…
There were supposed to be two rooms. We booked two rooms
and… Well, there is a bed. But it doesn’t look
like a bedroom to me. It’s okay. It’s the way it is.
Usually, it’s more… It’s very honest. Everything is very honest
and fair in South Africa, and… Well, here is the first time I see that they sell a bedroom
that is not a bedroom, basically. Anyway, I’m gonna have to…
We’re gonna stay a few days here. I’ll have to send emails to figure out
what I can do with this freaking motor. I mean, with my mother being here,
I might be able to continue a little bit. Maybe I’ll give her some weight
because the motor barely works. Maybe I’ll give her most of my weight
and continue a little bit, but… Yeah, it will buy me
some time to make videos, and then take time to edit them while I wait for a new motor
or for a solution because… Yeah, I cannot continue like this,
basically. It’s… On flat, it’s okay. But as soon as it’s too steep,
it’s gonna be impossible. So Lesotho, like this, is undoable. I’ll see. I’ll keep you updated
in the coming videos. The beautiful farms in South Africa. So to finish the video, we’re gonna go to have a look there
behind the second mountain range, to have a quick look at the real Karoo, before heading to the Garden Route
for the next video. Hello! – Hello! – Let’s go! So we are heading to Prince Albert via Swartberg Pass for a bit
of tourism, family tourism. Swartberg Pass, Prince Albert,
and then back to Oudtshoorn via De Rust. I think it’s a popular loop
around the north of Oudtshoorn. What a beautiful place! I think
we have the national flower around here. Let’s go have a look at the Protea. A little bit old. But it’s a field of… Well, it’s
probably not the right season. But it’s a field of these giant flowers.
You see, they’re almost as big as me. – [FR] That’s beautiful. – What a place, guys! Die Top of the Swartberg Pass. Oh my god, it’s cold.
It’s really, really cold. And here we have the view,
while against the sun, over the Karoo. Oh my god! This is spectacular. Quite an adventure
with a small car like this. So you can see
the beauty of South Africa, the beauty of the Karoo,
of the Little Karoo. Here is the Little Karoo
with the correct light. And on the other side now. We’re heading into the Karoo to have a well-deserved lunch
in Prince Albert. I guess that’s quite a nice picnic spot.
So I am not allowed to get too close. My mother is very afraid of heights.
Look at this view, guys! Quite a beautiful road. Let’s go? – Yes. – Oui, oui, oui, oui? – Oui. – Prince Albert, here we come. Hello? Hello! – Hello, hello!
– Do you have food? – Yeah. – We can sit anywhere outside
or…? – Anywhere outside. Yeah. – Anywhere outside.
Okay, thank you! – Welcome! – Hopla! – Hi, sir! So my name is Chori.
– Chori? – Yeah, this is Leighton. Welcome to Yellow House!
– Thank you very much. Thank you. – [FR] What did she say? – [EN]
Ready to order? – [Both] Yes. – What would you like? – So
we’ll get one Marrakech for her. – Okay. – And one “We’ll always have
Paris” burger for me. – Okay. Thank you! – Thank you very much! – So here’s
the Marrakesh salad. – Thank you! – Thank you very much! – Thank you!
– So do you need anything else? – Do you have sauce,
maybe, for the potatoes? – Yeah, we have tomato sauce.
– Tomato sauce, yeah. – Okay. – [FR] Do you want something? – No,
I’m fine. – [EN] The salad looks good. [FR] Your salad looks better
than my thing. I am disappointed. – Really? – No, it’s okay. Really? – Take! – [EN] Let’s try my mother’s salad
a little bit. It looks very, very good. Very good. Fantastic! Yes. – Here you go. – Thank you
very much! – Enjoy! – Thank you! Very good! [FR] Ah, I’m happy!
Let’s try the burger, guys. It’s very good. There is a bit of onions,
some kind of kimchi, not very sour, but… Yeah, a really good burger. Fantastic. Beautiful food in Prince Albert. – Hi! – Hello! Hello! And here we are in downtown Prince Albert. This wayβthe Little Karoo, and this wayβ
the real Karoo. It really looks like it’s the last town before entering
the drier part of the Karoo, the last town before the real desert. It really feels like this. The last oasis
of civilization before the emptiness. It’s really a lovely little town. So, while we are enjoying
the beauty of Prince Albert, and the beautifully sculpted old trees, I start to have some news. So I contacted both Shimano and AZUB
andβ¦ Shimano in South Africa. And everyone is… I don’t know. It seems I’m gonna have a solution,
maybe in Plettenberg Bay or Port Elizabeth. I don’t know which one, but…
So I’m very happy because… Yeah, it seems there will be a solution. And I should be able to continue
the way back. Well, to… Yeah, to continue Season 2
and not to stop after three episodes. Anyway, so I’ll see. Maybe AZUB will send me one motor. Maybe Shimano South Africa
will send me one motor, but it will probably take some time
to fit it on the trike. But things are going the right way. And I’ll probably, hopefully,
have a motor that will last all the way back to Europe; yes! Fransie Pienaar Museum. It’s very funny
for us French to see Pienaar, because Pienaar is a not-so-
polite way, is a very familiar way, to say “wine” in French. Pinard le pinard.
It’s really for rural people. And you have the old, beautiful
Central Hotel here. It’s a very, very, yeah, Prince Albert is
a very lovely small town. My mother was saying it might be… With Hermanus, it’s probably
the most beautiful city we’ve both seen in South Africa. Really lovely. Everything good? – Yes.
– Yes? – Yeah. – All good, yes. – All good. – Okay. Very good! See?
She speaks very good English now. Nice bicycles. You see? It’s full
of like, small, beautiful shops. A beautiful place
before entering the Karoo. Swartberg Hotel; that’s probably the end
of our small visit to the Little Karoo, and a very brief visit
to the beginning of the Karoo. Now we’re gonna make our way
back to Oudtshoorn. See you for the next adventures. Ciao, guys, back on the road
without a motor, still. South Africa! What a country! What a place! Oh, look
at the crystal clear water! And look at that! I’m falling. Hopla!
