The owner of an Ancoats barbers says he has been forced to call time on his business after 43 years thanks to overrunning roadworks saw him rack up £7,000 of losses.

A Manchester council project is installing cycle lanes and upgrading pedestrian crossings on Oldham Road, near the famous Wing Yip superstore.

It began in February, and was initially projected to finish in late April — but its completion date has repeatedly been moved back to July, then September, and now winter 2025.

To make up time, crews are working overnight from 8:30pm to 5:30am this month.

A barber in Anco says overrunning road works have caused him to shut up shop after 43 years. Jimmy Kennedy says the work on Olden Road has cost him £7,000 in losses over 5 months and he’s bringing his planned retirement forward by 6 months. A Manchester Council project is installing cycle lanes and upgrading pedestrian crossings near to the famous Wing Yip Supertore. The project began in February and was initially supposed to finish in late April. However, the end date has been moved back repeatedly to July, then September, and now winter 2025. Jimmy Kennedy says there’s no passing trade, no bus stop, and customers find it hard to park nearby. The works have also meant one bar has lost outdoor seating and said they were losing money because of it. Manchester Council said they had sympathy for those disrupted. They added that it’s an extensive scheme intended to benefit both residents and businesses with improvements to walking and cycling provision and access to public transport. They said unforeseen issues beneath the surface of the road have affected the completion of the project, but work is being done as quickly as possible. Follow for more.
