We have been dreaming of visiting this
area for years, beautiful in every season but absolutely incredible in the winter,
all these small villages and towns that have inspired Disney classics and Studio
Ghibli masterpieces have always been on our wish list! And this year we are finally
here to visit them with our own eyes, we can’t wait to share this
magical trip to Alsace with you! So now, sofa, blanket and hot chocolate in hand, come with us on this new adventure
to get ready for this Christmas! We leave early in the morning around 6am,
a journey of around 5 and a half hours awaits us across Switzerland, if you buy the Swiss
motorway vignette like us in December 2023 it will be valid until 31 January 2025
therefore for more than a year. Once we arrive in France it
starts to snow quite heavily, the roads are all white but it’s a wonderful
welcome! We are in Eguisheim, the first stop on our itinerary; we seem
to have arrived on the set of a perfect Christmas film, also thanks to
the snow that is now falling thickly, all the houses are decorated, never
one the same as the other, each one has its own particularity but
before entering the streets of the center we look for a little place to have lunch, not an easy
task given that it is Monday and many places are closed, but we find this beautiful
underground restaurant inside a cellar! We taste our first Tarte Flambée, a regional dish which might seem like a pizza to you
but especially the dough is very different I try the typical one with cheese,
onions and bacon while Paolo tastes one similar to mine but with the addition of
Munster, and it’s not bad! After warming up a bit we go out to finally visit the town; everything starts
from the large central square with the fountain, there the main streets branch off and lead
us to walk among half-timbered houses (our great obsession), all colored differently
with extraordinary decorations, we would spend hours observing
all the details of every window of every door, of every frieze
or sign of shops and restaurants. In our opinion, it is these small
details that make a place incredible and in this period the people who
live and have activities in these villages really do a crazy job to create something unique. While walking around Eguisheim try to spot
the storks’ nests among the roofs I’m here The historic center of the town has an
almost circular shape and is still surrounded by walls today; there is a street that runs around
the central nucleus called the girotondo, you absolutely have to go through
it all, we also find an artisan shop that produces Pain d’épices: a sweet
with honey and spices typical of Alsace and which I made a point
of tasting already before leaving is fantastic guys you can’t not try it if you
come here! Let’s take another walk along the central street, it’s difficult to leave this
fairytale place but it’s time to go and check in. We arrived in our room, super! In the hotel
here in Mittelwihr, I hope I said it right! We didn’t imagine it being so beautiful,
it’s really cute even if it’s a bit retro but it fits! It’s a very Christmassy environment
with all this wood it’s themed with travel There are two bathrooms as always in France:
one for the toilet only and the other for the sink and shower; and now we rest a little Paolo
will surely start saving the photos of the first village we visited and then we will go out
to see another one for dinner in the evening we found the hotel in a village
in a strategic position a few kilometers from everyone
the places we want to visit It looks like a miniature castle and it is all
decorated for Christmas in a super nice way. The hotel has the same name as the town: Le
Mittelwihr. Maybe it will be useful for you to know. Shortly after we leave the room
and drive towards our next stop. Have you ever seen a town
that literally welcomes you with a smile? Look carefully at the entrance
tower, you can see it too, right? As soon as we passed the arch,
the show of lights and jazz songs broadcast from the speakers
immediately made us fall in love. We arrived in the second village of today:
we are in Turckheim which is a very small but super cute and then the little houses
that you will see here behind me at the market are wonderful, we have never seen them so
personalized one different from the other and there is also a mega Advent
calendar here behind me Now let’s do a I walk around
then look for a little place to have dinner there isn’t a great choice because as it’s Monday
many things are closed but we’ll find something! In the central square there is a
small but well-kept market of only artisans with some typical local products, the colored
wooden houses are the most beautiful we have ever seen! They recreate a village of
Santa’s elves. Brightly colored images that make their own scene are projected onto the
buildings and the church and in one corner a giant Advent calendar in a Maxi version stands
out; also the Central street is very beautiful! We go to dinner in the only restaurant we
found open and with seats available, it’s a bit chaotic but we didn’t have a bad meal!
Paolo tried the spazzle with Munster, the German influence in traditional cuisine is really
noticeable. I, on the other hand, wanted to stay light and only had a plate of typical cheeses and
a bit of salad! After this dinner we go out and a surprise awaits us: every evening at 9pm,
in fact, during the Advent period, it is possible to participate in the patrol with the
Veilleur de Nuit; the guardian of the night This figure has existed in the
village of Turckheim since 1540 and it is beautiful in our opinion that
this tradition has survived to this day. The main function of the guardian
was to go around the village reminding the inhabitants to put out
the candles at night to prevent fires. The tour is really suggestive and we
recommend it, unfortunately it is only in French; I tried to translate as much as
possible to Paolo, but with poor results! After the hour-long patrol
we say goodbye to Turckheim and return to the hotel to rest for tomorrow. We wake up just before dawn, we take our car and start driving on what
is called the Alsace wine route It is easy to understand why. In the meantime
the sun has come out and the light is crazy! Today we decided to dedicate
our entire day to Colmar, the largest city we will see on this trip! We got up before 7am to get to the center before most people but breakfast first thing! We can’t help but
eat Pain au chocolat at least once while we’re in France, but we also try a Manalà; typical
brioche of Christmas in Alsace in the shape of a little man, it is super approved you will
see it almost everywhere in the boulangerie We pass next to the cathedral
and then we head towards one of the most iconic and most
photographed points of Colmar the street intersection in front of the building
called Au Vieux Pignon dated 1588; the houses in this street are more beautiful than the other,
I will never get tired of taking photos and admiring these fairy-tale buildings! We have just
arrived in Colmar, we decided to come early in the morning before the markets and all
the shops opened, hoping to see it a little empty without people because we
know that it is very touristy at any time of the year but especially now Christmas!
Now we are heading towards little Venice! Thus we arrive in the neighborhood
called Little Venice; this area is beautiful. The colorful houses that are reflected in the
canals and the decorations that embellish the streets are splendid! Before it’s too late and
the queue forms, let’s go and do something very characteristic of Petite Venise: a boat ride
on the canal created by the Lauch river. Don’t stop at the departure of the boats on the
main street where there is always an incredible queue. Follow the signs that will take you to walk
through the mostly deserted secondary streets to a wonderful point with a second
mooring for small wooden boats. The boy who drives the boat tells
us an interesting story but we don’t want to spoil it for you, it’s a nice experience, the
the tour lasts about 30 minutes and the cost of the ticket is €8, in some points you
have to duck to go under the bridges so watch your head! let’s start exploring the many
small squares scattered around the historic center the markets are divided into five different
squares and they are all different from each other but the stands that we liked the most were the
ones inside the old customs house there were artisans working glass, clay or which
create perfectly decorated biscuits. The old customs house is one of the most
important historic buildings in the city and from its external staircase you have a privileged and
special view of Au Vieux Pignon, don’t miss it! Beyond the markets, the best thing
to do in the city is without a doubt to wander the streets and see all the
decorated houses and the shops that are always creative with
different and unique decorations! While walking through the streets
don’t forget to pass by Maison Pfister for two reasons: first: because
the building is a symbol of the city and then seeing it doesn’t it remind you
of something? If like us you love the works of Studio Ghibli you will certainly recognize
the setting of Howl’s Moving Castle; Master Miyazaki seems to have taken
inspiration from Colmar or in any case from this area of France to design Sophie’s city,
as seen at the beginning of the film. Let’s go back to the Collegiate Church of
San Martino which we had only seen briefly this morning: it is an imposing and beautiful
church the color of the exterior is particular between brown, red and orange the interior
is a little austere but still of great impact We pass through one of the most authentic streets
of Colmar which is inexplicably snubbed by most people: it is Rue des Tanneurs which marks
the entrance to the district of the same name where tanners continued to
work here until the 19th century; the houses are tall and narrow because
the skins were placed in the attics to dry. We stop for lunch at the covered
market which is located right next door. There is really a great choice of where to eat and many different stands to choose from;
the prices are on average similar to those we found almost everywhere, in fact on
our trip we spent around €15 each per meal! Come early because it might
be difficult to find a seat, however Paolo eats a Tarte Flambée, while I try a really good vegetable quiche! In other stands we find some organic products
that seem delicious to us and we choose to take home with us a Pain d’épices
for the rest of the family to taste. I briefly interrupt your viewing
of the video, you know that when I make these appearances to give you information or in
any case to tell you something important, as you surely know I started my small
travel design business, if you haven’t seen the video in which I explain in detail what
I can do for you you can find it above or below in the description. First of all I wanted to thank
those who have already booked or have already done the first consultations with me and
I am very happy to meet you in person, so for this Christmas, given that I have also
been asked, I thought of creating some Gift Cards to give to those you want with the
various packages of my consultations if you purchase the Gift Cards
by December 31st of this year you will also have a small discount
on the total cost of the consultations and they will be these discounts respectively:
10% on Travel tips, 15% on City Escape and 20% on the complete package
which is Travel Adventure However, I leave you all the various details below
in the description and also my email where you can write to me if you want to ask me something
more! Thanks and now let’s go back to Colmar. Once we’re back walking through the streets
of the city we stop to have a hot apple juice to warm our hands a little from the cold and
we also try a sweet Bretzel! It’s impossible to come to Colmar and not eat
even a sweet or savory pretzel! You will certainly notice small golden signs on the
ground with a famous monument that is not exatly French drawn; following them you will arrive at the
museum dedicated to Frederick August Bartholdi, builder of the Statue of Liberty Not far away we find another building worthy of
note: the house of heads from the name you can immediately understand what is depicted on its
facade: 111 human heads and in the center on the roof a statue sculpted by the usual Bartholdi,
very beautiful! Opposite is the Musée Hansi dedicated to the most famous artist and
cartoonist of Colmar, on the ground floor there is a very scenic shop, while on the first floor
the museum, the cost of the ticket is €5. When evening falls the city lights up
and it lights up in a thousand colors! There are projectors on the facades
of the buildings, little lights on every tree and the appearance of the streets is transformed!
Let’s go back to the riverside neighborhood to do something we didn’t want to
miss but first a snack! I’m finally trying this typical sweet that I hadn’t tried
yet but I made sure to try it, it looks delicious! I can’t pronounce the name or I’ll let you out here or I’ll say it in voice over!
Now I’ll taste it and then I’ll tell you how it is. I have to confess that I didn’t
like it very much; it’s like a pandoro but dry, perhaps I chose the place where to
buy it badly? Let me know if you tried it and if you liked it! Anyway, let’s go
towards our destination, now that it’s dark it’s impossible not to notice it! Since it is forbidden to fly with
a drone here we couldn’t miss the opportunity to see
Colmar from above, fully illuminated, the ride on the Ferris wheel doesn’t cost a
cheap €9 each but the view is really super! We return to land and go in search of
a quiet place to have dinner, to change some of the usual dishes we eat a vegetable
soup which isn’t bad by the way! let’s take a last walk through the streets
of Colmar which are slowly emptying. We say goodbye to this magical city and
return to the hotel for our second night here! Last morning in Alsace. We’re sorry
we had so little time to explore this area, let’s check out and head to our last
stop of the trip: The town of Riquewihr, the village is famous for being
the setting of one of the most beautiful Disney classics
of all time: Beauty and the Beast We arrive quite early and there
are still few people around but as for Colmar there are a lot of
trucks unloading the goods, so let’s have breakfast first thing! we find this delicious
boulangerie in a colorful and wonderful athat has a great choice of desserts
and bread, time for breakfast the town has filled up incredibly… There are many organized
tours and they invade the central street, you are surely imagining it, this
has made us ruined the visit a bit if it’s like this during the week
we can’t imagine on weekends We throw ourselves into the side
streets which are completely empty and we manage to enjoy a completely
different atmosphere compared to the crowds of the centre; let’s
wander around these splendid streets with half-timbered houses in bright colors that are
much more lively than the other places we have seen in recent days, it is easy to imagine
Belle walking here with a book under her arm. We should try to return in a different season
to Riquewihr to see it in all its beauty We now have a 6 hour drive across
Switzerland ahead of us passing lakes and mountains, through 17 km long tunnels
and plains dotted with farms it was short but a special journey that reminded us once again
how much we love the magic of this time of year the fairytale atmosphere of these countries
is truly incomparable and we hope we have managed to convey to you at least part of
what they have given us! Thank you once again for being our traveling companions.
Thank you for your support and for making it to the end of the video! Don’t forget to leave
a like, subscribe to the channel and maybe share the video, it doesn’t cost you
anything but for us it’s essential! We’ll see you next Friday with
the last trip of the year and to wish us Christmas wishes!
A hug, bye bye!
