The profile of this 16th stage is the start of the third week of the Vuelta a España. Today on Eurosport, the last week of the season’s major tours, and things are moving very fast, very fast, even on the road to this Vuelta, since we’re averaging 45.3 km/h. From the start, a breakaway that took more than an hour to form. The first four attackers of this breakaway are Andrea Bagioli, Bob Jungels, Phil Lepickering, and Victor Guernalec. We initially broke out as a four-man group, and then 13 other riders immediately reacted to form the strong breakaway of the day. 17 riders at the front of the race. Where are you going? Your back’s going to hurt, Mikel , where is he going like that, 61 kilometers from the finish, Mikel Landa? Does he already want to make a small selection from this group of 17? On the momentum.
Above all, it’s not a very difficult section. Overall, the roads are still quite wide for about thirty kilometers. Yes, they’re going to be pretty flat, but yes, he’ll still be good in a group. Because there, he’s gained a few meters, he’s pushing on. He’d still like to hear back from maybe one or two riders. They’re looking back a lot. Mikel Landa pushing on and setting off 61 kilometers from the finish on this climb. The Alto d’Agroba, 11,300 kilometers of climbing. He’s not setting off on the steepest gradients. It’s a surprising choice by Mikel Landa to distinguish himself at that moment, to get a head start, perhaps, quite simply. He says to himself: Potentially, there’s going to be a fight at the top. Come on, I’m anticipating, I’m setting off now because I ‘m perhaps not at 100% either. We saw him hampered by his back problems earlier in this Tour of Spain. Look, it’s relaunched behind. It’s Egan Bernal who will try to catch Mikel Landa. Clément Braz Afonso , there are three riders, so obviously, we have to move, we have to react, especially since Team Ineos is two. If Egan Bernal goes, we have to go if we can. That’s what the French rider from the FDJ Groupama will do. Jack Stewart, he probably didn’t like it either. Is he still there? He’s there. He’s fine. He’s even better than Andrea Bagioli, than Kevin Vermaerke, he’s there. And Marc Soler. Marc Soler isn’t sharp either. Look, he took the small break with Finley Pickering , yes, but that’s Marc Soler. That’s Marc Soler, that’s it. We can see him let go, come back, attack, win. Egan Bernal makes the connection with a grimace all the same. We grit our teeth on Egan Bernal’s side to come back to Mikel Landa. There’s a track record there anyway. Two leaders. We have two excellent climbers at the front of the race. With Mikel Landa and Egan Bernal. More like riders used to aiming for the general classification of a Grand Tour, but here more in a stage-hunting role. Egan Bernal, winner of the Tour, winner of the Giro de Paris-Nice, the Tour de Suisse. And Mikel Landa who has already won three stages in the Giro, where he finished as best climber. A stage winner also in the Vuelta. Clément Braz Afonso, I still escaped with some great people. Yes, there, I’m not doing badly. I’m not doing badly, I’m well surrounded. The three of us have won a lot. Stages and Grand Tours. With 54.300 kilometers to go, we’ve already passed two challenges. The Alto di San Antonino was 90 kilometers from the finish. And then this Alto di Agroba, a few kilometers ago, with Mikel Landa on the attack. Mikel Landa, joined by Egan Bernal, Clément Braz Afonso and then Brieuc Rolland, two of the three riders present in this breakaway on the Groupama FDJ side, are at the front of the race. It’s not with just anyone, so with Egan Bernal and Mikel Landa, but it’s going to come back behind, driven in particular by Marc Soler. The gap has grown considerably thanks to this false flat descent. It’s true that we were back to 50 meters, less than 10 seconds at the top of the hill, but after that, no one was really able to make the connection and up front, we get along well. We’ll arrive at the bottom of the next hill with more than 40 seconds. To make the jump, it’s going to take a very strong Marc Soler. 40 seconds, even announced. Nico Denz who made the jump at the right time. Nico Denz who managed to get back to this group, who made a big effort with two riders from the Groupama FDJ team. The two youngsters. Brieuc Rolland and Clément Braz Afonso who are at the front with Mikel Landa, with Egan Bernal. Nico Denz, there, will he manage to take the wheels? We mustn’t look back. We have to immediately follow the wheel of Egan Bernal, Mikel Landa, to try to make the jump with the two riders of the FDJ lead group. We understood that we were not going to get into the wheel of Nico Denz because he was borderline, borderline, the German. Yes, and then it’s not a movie, Nico Denz sometimes, we have riders who pull a face to say: I ‘m not very well. No, Nico Denz, there, I can assure you that he is at the top. He knows that it will pass. Marc Soler will have blown everyone away. Incredible, Marc Soler. We must be having a great time, on the side of Clément Braz Afonso de Brieuc Rolland to race like that on a stage of the Vuelta with Mikel Landa and Egan Bernal anyway. A moment ago, the five leaders who are approaching this Alto de Prado. The penultimate difficulty of the day, 3,300 kilometers at 9%, David, you talked about it earlier during the There, it’s something else entirely. It’s a real firecracker. It climbed in stages, but we have a real firecracker. At the beginning, it’s already climbing, there are sections sometimes at almost 10%, and in the middle of the climb, we will have practically two kilometers, but very steep. We put a section at 23%, so it’s obviously a climb that will cause gaps. We’ll see if there are any riders likely to get back to the front. Marc Soler, an Agioli, a Bob Jungels, a Kevin Vermaercke just in front. We have the feeling that it’s a bit of a free-for-all. Still, there, it’s every man for himself. Vermaercke there, but who can’t catch up with Pickering and Soler. There’s Bagioli and Jungles who know we’re heading for high percentages. And we’re relaunching Egan Bernal’s side; we definitely don’t want to see Marc Soler return. Finally, we were a little doubtful earlier when Mikel Landa accelerated. I was wondering why Mikel Landa accelerated at that moment; in the end, he may have definitively eliminated a good number of riders in this group of 17 from the race for the stage victory . A rather intelligent anticipation on the part of the Basque. There’s more than 15% there, right? 23. Yes, because we’re putting 16% there, but there… That’s why we’re still going to look at what’s happening with the Red Jersey peloton. They’re stopped, they’re stuck on the road. Nico Denz lying on his bike trying to move forward while facing these terrible percentages.. We are on 20%, practically, there are not even 15 riders in the Red Jersey group. It’s safe who can, with this acceleration, Jonas Vingegaard is there his runner-up Joao Almeida also Félix Grobschartner in difficulty and it’s stuck this time for Julio Pelizari. He is on the limit, limit, just like Félix Gall. Vingegaard, who had a problem. Vingegaard who is forced to stop and who is forced to change bikes and set off again with Ben Tunet’s. Puncture announced for… He should get back into the group quite easily, especially more than he has teammates. Another puncture. It’s not Clément? Yes. It’s Clément, the hard blow. He doesn’t have his car either. It’s stuck behind. What a hard blow after, Brieuc Rolland slightly distanced earlier in the Prado. The last escapee of the Groupama FDJ in front, victim of a puncture. Now, obviously, we’re not going to wait for him. Terrible for Clément Braz Afonso who perhaps found himself in a position to play for the stage victory with Egan Bernal, with Mikel Landa who is forced to let this duo go. Disappointment for Clément Braz Afonso the Groupama FDJ who had done everything right with three men in the breakaway today. With Brieuc Rolland, Clément Braz Afonso is able to follow this duo. Finally, we have Brieuc Rolland who cracked at first, but a Clément Braz Afonso who was on par with these two men. It was due to a puncture that he found himself eliminated. It’s now official. There will be no finish today at the summit of the Alto Castro Irvillé, due to major protests three kilometers from the finish line. The finish will be eight kilometers away at the arch, finally, the last eight kilometers, because there is a kilometer point, there is… A cell? A cell. Thanks Jacky. 8 kilometers from the finish. We’ll take the times. And the stage winner 8 kilometers from the finish, that’s the difference with Bilbao. There will be, if I understand correctly, Jacky, a stage winner today. Yes, there would be a stage winner, but in 7 kilometers. And then, there is practically only downhill now. That changes a lot of things, obviously. Two kilometers before the finish, two kilometers for Egan Bernal on the road to Mikel Landa. We should remember that it was Mikel Landa who initiated this attack. He set off alone. Just now, Mikel Landa, very far from the finish, 61 kilometers, exactly from the finish of this stage. Mikel Landa, who hasn’t won since 2021. It was the general classification of the Tour of Burgos. In a road race, he hasn’t won since 2019. Two returnees, two experienced riders from the international peloton. Two riders who were there for the General Classification and who will find themselves fighting for a stage victory today. A somewhat strange stage victory, obviously, since the finish is 8 kilometers from the initially planned finish of this 16th stage of the Vuelta. That’s it, the sprint is on between the two riders. Because it’s there, the Arch. The red arch is the finish of this 16th stage. For the moment, Egan Bernal was at the front. Victory for the Colombian is done. It’s done, it was on the line. It was there, the finish line. He doesn’t know it, Egan Bernal, but he has just won the 16th stage of the Vuelta. He’s ahead of Mikel Landa, the Sudal Quick Step rider. Look, doubt is creeping into Bernal’s head. He doesn’t know if he should continue. No, it’s fine, we saw it. We waved our hands a little. We saw it clearly, this line that had been marked just before the banner indicating the end of this race. The line is ultimately placed 200 meters before the banner for the last eight kilometers. It’s misleading because it was really the eight-kilometer banner. The photographer, at one point, he didn’t see it, he was staring at this eight-kilometer banner, but he did win, Egan Bernal. His turn, the red-trunked peloton. We’re a little lost between the line indicating the last eight kilometers and the real finish line, which was placed a few meters before. The rebirth, the resurrection, the return to the foreground of an Egan Bernal who came very close to death, by his own admission, during a terrible crash in training near his home country. Now it’s January 24, 2022. He’s ahead of Mikel Landa. Frustration for Brieuc Rolland, who just finished seven seconds behind. It’s also huge frustration for Clément Braz Afonso, who was part of that breakaway.
