An obviously eventful start to the stage on this 15th stage of the Vuelta a España between A Veiga/Vegadeo and Monforte de Lemos, with no less than 3,000 meters of elevation gain spread over the 167.8 kilometers of the race. The only opportunity for the fast riders in this peloton during this second week. It’s practically the same route as in 2021. It was the breakaway that won near Monforte de Lemos, despite a lot of work from the sprinter teams and in particular from one team, Alberto Dainese’s DSM. We had never been able to catch the breakaways, except that today is the 15th stage. In 2021, it was the 19th stage, so there was perhaps a little more fatigue too. Two men at the front of the race, two men who escaped a few moments ago from the breakaway. We had, gentlemen, before these two men escaped, 47 riders at the front of the race. There was a huge battle on the first climb with this… As we mentioned, this Puerto a Garganta, 16.5 kilometers of 5% climbing were on the program. From kilometer zero, we then had small uncharted climbs. Then the Alto de Barbetos which was climbed a few moments ago by the riders. It was on this occasion that these two men here in the image escaped, Louis Vervaeke and Jay Vine. And then behind, we have this peloton which lost unit after unit. The sprinters who were unable to keep up with the best climbers, except for some who managed to hang on. And we have this breakaway of 47 riders in total, 47 riders at the front and more than nine minutes behind the peloton. In this breakaway group, we still have some very high-caliber sprinters, Jake Stewart, who wins bunch sprints. Mads Pedersen, we don’t need any introduction. We have Orluis Aular who is perhaps a little less fast. I think it’s practically the same level. Thibaud Gruel, Orluis Aular, even if I put on paper, especially on this route, that it was a small advantage for the Venezuelan. And then, we have another sprinter who doesn’t win, it’s true, many bunch sprints, but who will play his personal card, it’s Edward Planckaert, the only representative of the Alpecin team, who, for his part, is quietly within the peloton. He is one of the teams represented with only one rider. When your name is Planckaert, what do you do? You hide, obviously, and you wait for the Lidl Trek to control, let’s say, its last 90 kilometers, for Lidl Trek to already catch up with the two escaped riders. Because in my opinion, we’ll see Verona, Gebreigzhabier, Ciccone, Bernard, trying to control everything until the finish line. There are still things to say about Radio Tour. The gap that’s growing, growing, growing compared to the peloton, but especially growing between the two leaders, and we’ll call it the Pedersen peloton. The Pedersen peloton that will soon be three minutes behind. Even though we have more than 40 riders in this group, some won’t come to pass a relay. That’s for sure. It could, it could. We mustn’t play. There, for me, three minutes is the maximum gap. We still have quality. A spectator crashes. It also causes a fall. It’s Javier Romo who is there. He wanted to jump off the embankment. He missed. That will have a big impact. Still, in the pursuit, we had gained almost 30 seconds because Javier Romo, when things are going well, it’s not bad. He’s not happy, obviously, the rider from the Movistar team, who was just hit there. The regulator, he must have experienced the fall too. He had a fall. Yes, because he’s limping. He’s forced to get another bike. No! It’s a protester who wanted to demonstrate. He tripped over his foot. The fall happened after, but that’s where it came from, that’s where the wave came from. Yes, it made a wave. Did it brake? Did it touch at that moment? The protester who caught his feet jumping the ditch. Maybe it also scared some people in the peloton and it made a wave. Louis Vervaeke and Jay Vine with 35.2 km to go. It’s starting to feel less and less good for both men, with only a minute and a half of separation, a little less. For the rider from the Soudal Quick Step team in first position, the rider from the Uae team in second position. He won’t have lost everything. Obviously, today, Jay Vine, since he will have gone to get important points in the mountains classification. The intermediate sprint for the leading duo near Sarria. And then, we’ll be in the thick of things. After Sarria, David, it’s going to be a 4.8 kilometer climb at 4%. We talked about it. We said to ourselves: There are quite a few riders who have no chance of going for the victory, who might try to make a move on this false flat. There are experienced riders who are going to cause a stir. There’s Team Ineos. Yes. Kwiatko.
With Michal Kwiatkowski, the former world champion, we saw Egan Bernal in third place while it’s over for Carlos Verona. That’s more surprising. Yes, but a lot of riding. Even though he’s a good climber, the acceleration of a fresh rider like Kwiatkowski hurts. What we feared was that after the hard work of the entire de Pedersen team, they’ll all fall back. It’s going to be up to the Green Jersey wearer to control everything now. And controlling everything with 30 kilometers to go might not be as easy as that. He’s following the attacks of Buitrago and Egan Bernal. Santiago Buitrago is on the attack. Yesterday, it was Finley Pickering who made a strong impression for the battle towards the Farrapona. Remember, Finneley Pickering took tenth place in the stage. His first top 10 in a road race since turning professional at the start of last season. Finneley Pickering put on a show. Santiago Buitrago is also doing better in this second week. He’s now on the attack, followed by Bernal, followed by Mads Pedersen. We saw bib number 134. At the back, rather struggling, is Thibaud Gruel, the Groupama FDJ rider. They’re reacting. This famous false flat hurts. Fifteen kilometers. For these pursuers, precisely. Fifteen kilometers still to go to claim the victory of this fifteenth stage today. From the Vuelta a España, Mads Pedersen, Orluis Aular, Magnus Sheffield, Egan Bernal, Santiago Buitrago, Eddie Dunbar, and Marco Frigo will try to join forces to both catch the leading duo and prevent the return of a much larger group behind with other fast riders. Right, the junction is made with seven kilometers to go. There, we’ll start again. Obviously, the chances of seeing a victory for Vervaeke and Vine are less. The numerical superiority of Ineos means that we’ll each take turns attacking a little. Bernal is the first to launch hostilities with Buitrago in his wheelhouse, then Pedersen will try to catch everyone. And Aular, he took a gamble. I take Pedersen’s wheel and wait for it to happen. That’s what we must have told him. Isn’t that stupid? Yes. It’s true that I would have been a sprinter, the same. That’s the choice I would have made and it’s the choice we must have told him in our earpiece. It starts with Mads Pedersen. We saw the gap. It showed up and it’s confirmed, 40 seconds. They put us 41, but there were 40 seconds. Look, Jay Vine and Vervaeke. They spent so much time together that they’re trying to get along. They said: We didn’t do everything for this. Come on, launch an attack. I’m going to counter. They don’t have the same jersey, but they have the same ambition, especially not to end up in a sprint with Pedersen. And Mads Pedersen who wants support. Mads Pedersen who asks everyone to work, to relay. And we’re closing in behind. We’ve just announced 5 kilometers from the finish, 31 seconds. We’ve gained almost 10 seconds in a kilometer. 30 seconds is huge, but if you look at yourself like that, look, you see all the riders in the leading group turning around to possibly see the return of the group Stewart, Planckaert, The next to try something, who will it be? Pedersen. He’s… Frigo, I think it could be good. It’s Pedersen himself. It’s Pedersen who’s going to anticipate. By dint of being attacked, Pedersen will take things in hand two kilometers from the finish. There, he hasn’t surprised anyone. Watch out, counterattack. It’s going to come back with speed behind. Frigo, Frigo, Jay Vine, Sheffield. Also in last position, Magnus Sheffield to surprise perhaps. 24 seconds, last gap on the counterattack group. Jay Vine who will go there in turn. Yes, each in turn, will close the door. Yes, and it’s also Bernal who will take the wheel. He takes his responsibilities. The green jersey and Ouh là, meanwhile, follows closely. The green jersey, it should be decided between Ouh là and Mads Pedersen, since at the Flamme Rouge, no one came back to escape. And there, there are two right-angled turns. Now, this last kilometer is quite technical. Yeah, Mads Pedersen wants to take the lead. It’s no longer Aular in his wheel. Now, it’s Magnus Sheffield who has come to position himself behind the green jersey. Two right turns and it will be the finish line near Monforte de Lemos. Will Mads Pedersen finally succeed in getting that bouquet, that stage victory he’s missing in this 2025 Tour of Spain? He’s in charge. He’s in charge. One last attack from Frigo, it’s him who, again, with the green mallet, will wedge himself into the Italian’s wheel. Orluis Aular, the mistake is that Magnus Sheffield is interposed. Last turn. Marco Frigo who will turn in the lead in this turn. Mads Pedersen in second position. Oh, the fall, for Magnus Sheffield. On the ground, the team rider, Iléos, Magnus Sheffield who falls here. We’ll come back to the front with Marco Frigo, still in front, and Mads Pedersen who will make the effort now. The sprint for the green jersey. Mads Pedersen to get his first victory in this 2025 Vuelta. He’ll do it, the green jersey. Four stage wins on the tiron. He hadn’t yet won the Vuelta this year. It’s done. Mads Pedersen wins in Monforte de Lemos. In charge in the finale, in charge with his team. Remember, in the 45-man breakaway, it was the best-represented team. He took his responsibilities to follow in the final peloton, his attacks from climbers like Bernal and Buitrago, and to avoid the comeback of this group, you see, in particular, sprinters like Jake Stewart, who comes to take a place of honor by winning the sprint of the first peloton. Come on, this top 10 of this 15th stage won, we remind you, by Mads Pedersen in front of Orluis Aular and Marco Frigo. Santiago Buitrago must be content with fourth place. Egan Bernal is sixth. Louis Vervaeke and Jay Vine who animated this whole day, are seventh and eighth. Magnus Sheffield, who fell in the final, must be content from ninth place.

Bank It: Mads MAX Beyond Vueltadome.

@Eurosport France
