Standing proudly amongst the pantheon of cycling’s most revered mountains, the Stelvio boasts some of the longest and most challenging climbs in bike racing. Relentless switchbacks over impossible gradients beneath extremes of weather. It is on the relentless, technical, and often treacherous slopes of the Stelvio where the most famous and revered battles have decided the fate of the Giro d’Italia’s coveted Maglia Rosa.
Jon Shubert explores the history and legends of the Stelvio and the surrounding regions, meeting people whose lives have been shaped by the mountain, and ex-professional Adam Hansen joins him as he makes his own attempt to conquer the coveted mountain.

[Music] there are some iconic claims that are just irresistible this is Boro in the far Northeast of Lombardy Italy’s richest and most varied region we’re in the land of passion and Beauty when it comes to cycling whenever Boro lands on the jira route map then an assault on the Paso Deo stelvio is inevitable here we are you see the line of the switchbacks such a spectacular image this is a real Masterpiece I’m going to be tackling the mountain from the East guiding me up is expr Adam Hansen you know you have some type of relationships with um events and races you hate it but you always come back cuz you just need to do it again and the stereo is a bit like that this is like a drug I’m addicted we go on to the Ste it’s freezing cold up there also if you get a thunderstorm it drops down 10 or 15° quickly I’ve seen bad things something we’re not confused about is how dangerous this is I was just amazed that some guy had an idea to put a bike race over it you have to show this mountain a lot of respect if you don’t have respect you get the payback that ambitious time you set us is getting close and I don’t think I’m going to make it on M alz is it’s not so steep stervio is much more difficult it was never ending climb but it is more brutal than any of you could have imagined this is for the tough guys no doubt about that [Music]

Beautifulll……. Adam Hansen is genius meanwhile
❤❤❤❤❤
Now do it downhill 😢
This is my bucket list climb
Fantastic. I want to cycle the Stelvio sometime.
Clutch in my moto died on Stelvio, so I’m fouling to climb it on bici da corsa👊
Did it in 2023 on Stelvio Bike Day. Had sunshine and very little wind, was unbelievably good. Recommend for all who love climbing on road bikes, it doesn’t get much better.
Stelvio can be extremely hard if you are to fast in the first third of the climb. Especially people who don't just want to get to the top but also with the best possible time tend to be to fast in the beginning. A sustainable speed feels slow. In the second, steepest part of the climb, you learn that a bit slower in the beginning was a good idea. The third part, turn 24 down to 1, gives the full view to the top and can be a wonderful experience or hell – depending on how much power you have left.
If you like going thru hell, give it a try, be probably 5 or 10 minutes faster and proudly publish it on strava. You got the bragging rights for the years to come.
If you like fun, keep the speed sustainable and make sure to reach the top in good condition. Be happy, you got 10 or 20 minutes longer fun than the other guy.
Where can I find the documentary now that gcn+ is history?
