I ride from Wolverfontein to Calidzdorp, via Ladismith, in the lttle Karoo, in the Western Cape, in South Africa.
Very soon after starting my day, my motor stops working, making it an absolute ordeal to ride to Ladismith. In Ladismith, I arrive insanely hungry, and as I search for some much needed food, so many people start to talk to me from all around the restaurants.
After a life saving double lunch, I resume my journey and, luckily, later in the afternoon, my motor finally restarts which allows me to finish the day more pleasantly. Finally, I arrive at another farm in a wonderful location for another beautiful remote little Karoo experience.

(Klein Karoo, South Africa) – Yes! Morning, my friends!
It started. Very good! I forgot my keys, like always. Op.
From Wolverfontein Cottage something. Let’s go! From the Little Karoo.
My mother is here. And let’s see
if we find Ashley and Andre. Hello! – Hello, hello! – Hello! – Action station. – Action station, yes.
– Very good. – How are you doing? – Good. – Well, well. – Are you packed? – I’m ready to go. – Ready to go?
– Amazing. – Fully ready to go. – Very impressive. – Blinkβ€”
and it’ll be finished. – Ah? – Blinkβ€”and you’ll be
in Cairo. – I don’t know. Well, this time, it’s gonna be
Morocco, the other side, but… – Oh, the other side. – Yeah. This time,
I came from Cairo first. – Lovely! Lovely. – But… – Waterβ€”check. – Divine! – Wheelsβ€”
check. – Yeah. – Legs in actionβ€”check. – Everything goes… Oh, each time,
you have a… – Eggs in action? – Legs in action. – Oh, legs. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah. – Legs in actionβ€”check. – Yeah. – Brilliant, sir.
It was lovely meeting you. – Yeah, it was really nice
staying here, also. – Beautiful! – Your place is very beautiful. Yeah.
– Thanks. – Thank you. – Thanks. – Very, very… – Thanks. – Yeah. – …absolutely be following
your journey. – Thanks. – It’s a very nice experience. – Thanks.
– Let me now also take a photo of you. – Yeah. Sorry, I mean, I… – Look at that! These dogs have never seen anything
like it. – Yeah, definitely. Yeah, yeah. – Lovely. – They love it.
– Beautiful! I’m proud of you. I’m not gonna give you any of those,
“Be careful in Nigeria. – No, no. Ah, yeah. – Be careful of the…” And it’s like,
“No.” – No. – Just have fun! Enjoy! – Whatever happensβ€”happens. Yeah.
– Yes, yes. – You got this far. Like… – Exactly. – Let me open the gate
for you! – Beautiful. – Okay, okay. – Bon voyage! – Merci beaucoup!
Yeah. – Merci. Oui. Be strong! – Thank you very much! Danki! – Lekker.
Cheers, man! – Good luck in the US! – Thank you! Yeah, we’ll need it!
Absolutely! – Yes. – Absolutely! – It’s true, yeah.
– Cheers, man! – Bye-bye. Thank you very much!
– Pleasure! – Enjoy the US! – Yes, thank you very much!
– Bye-bye! – Ciao! – So we were…
Oh, this place is beautiful. It’s nice that I have my mother with me, because I could not really stay
in those places by myself, because I cannot transport the food, in order to eat in places
that are far from supermarkets. So it’s very nice to experience
a different side of South Africa. Let’s go, guys! Let’s go! So today, 78 km to… To where? Just before Calitzdorp, in the Little Karoo,
across the Little Karoo, and about a bit more
than a 900-m elevation gain during the day also. So, let’s go, guys! And we have a sort of antelope just here. Hello. Back on the legendary R62! Ah, I love this country! Okay, so I still have the problem. Because I managed yesterday
to update the firmware of my motor, I thought maybe
that would solve the issue. But no, apparently not. So I’ll see. I guess I’ll have to probably go
all the way to Port Elizabeth with the on-and-off motor. And… Yeah, it’s gonna be a good training! And then, either I’ll manage to solve it
on my own or I’ll need to buy a new motor, and get it shipped to Port Elizabeth. That’s the way it is. Ah man, every small hill is such a pain! Ah, it’s gonna be a long day.
900 meters of climbing without motor. Oh my god. That could be
one of my worst days ever! Look at this beautiful place. Route 62! Hello. Ah, a small wildlife break.
Vyversrus. Vyversrus. Still this! A few zebras are there. Zebras and a few, maybe,
springboks. Oh man. Look at that. So apparently, it’s very stupid because the problem is,
this error makes that… The motor doesn’t start. So you just can’t have assistance,
which is very annoying. – Hi, Yves! – Hello! – Hi! – Yes. – Sorry to stop you! – It’s okay. – But we have been following
you ever since. – Yeah. – Yeah! – Since I arrived.
– It’s so nice to see you! – She, yesterday, looked at your program
when you were in Agulhas. – Yeah. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. Agulhas. Yeah, yeah,
yeah. – Yeah. – Yeah, we stopped there. – Yeah, yeah. – We stopped there. I mean,
we stopped looking for… – That is #181. – Yeah. – Ah? – I think it’s #181. Episode.
– Episode. – Oh, yes! Yeah. – Yes, yes. – I don’t remember which number.
Yeah, but… – Yes. – Yeah, but this is… – Yeah. – …the latest one…
– Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. – …that we followed. – Yeah. – Yeah.
– Yeah, that’s the latest I published. – Yes. – Yeah, yeah. – Yes, yes. – Where
are you going now? – How are you? – Before Calitzdorp. – Calitzdorp? We… – Okay, so we’re sleeping tonight
in Calitzdorp. – Yeah. – Oh, okay. – Yeah. – Nice! – Yeah. – I’ll sleep
just before. – Just before? – Yeah. – Yeah, I have a place booked on a farm…
– Oh, that’s so good to see you. – …just before. – Can we take a photo?
– Yeah, yeah. No problem, of course. Yeah. – Okay. – Please!
– Okay, thanks. – Danki! Thanks! Thank you very much!
– You’re welcome. – We really enjoy your program.
– I was just telling him last night that we’re following you and how
you were in Hermanus and you enjoyed… – Yeah. – …the food and… Yeah, so…
– Oh, yeah. The food is really good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. – [Both]
Yeah. – Thank you! – You’re welcome. – All the best to you! – Thank you
very much! – Yeah. – I don’t wanna keep you, but are you gonna spend
some more time in South Africa? – Yeah, yeah, I’m gonna spend… – But did you…? Did you go
to the eastern side of South Africa? – I’m heading towards the eastern side.
– Knysna and so forth. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. – Are you gonna go to Mossel Bay? – No, I’m gonna pass via George
and then directly towards Knysna. – No, no. Mossel Bay is near George. – Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
From “Woodshoorn”… – Sorry? – “Oudtshwoorm?” How do you say?
– Dullstroom. – Oudts…? “Oudtstrom”? “Oudtstrom”? – Dullstroom. – Yeah,
I guess that is… – Can you spell it? – Mossel Bay. – O-U-D-T-S-H…
– [Both] Oudtshoorn, Oudtshoorn. – Oudtshoorn, Oudtshoorn.
– Oudtshoorn. – Yeah, this is on this road. – From Oudtshoorn down to Wilderness
and then towards Knysna. – Okay. Then you’re gonna miss because I won’t…
– So I won’t pass via Mossel Bay. – If you were on the N2… – Yeah. – …and you were traveling
next to the coast… – Yeah. – …then we’ve got a holiday farm. – Ah, okay. – Yeah. – On the ocean
with game and everything. – Oh, really? Okay. – We would
invite you to come and stay there. – And my son said to me, you…
– Oh, nice. Yeah, but it’s… – Yeah. – That’s very nice of you, but… – Yeah,
I know. – Yeah, it’s not really on my way. – So we invite you to come and stay there,
but… All the best! – Thank you very much! Yeah. Thank you very much. Good luck to you, too. – Bye.
– Thank you! All the best. – Bye-bye! So the issue I have is that I’m
super slow without the motor. And I was planning on having
a… There is a beautiful… There’s a barbecue thing,
street food barbecue in Ladismith, but I think I’m gonna arrive too late, and the people might have left
already when I arrive. And now, I’m facing the main reason
why I travel with an electric bike. Ah, f*/*/*! Now it’s steep! And it’s the… It starts to be a little bit
too steep for me. I don’t have enough strength to push
on the pedals basically cuz the problem… The problem with this thing… F*/*/*! How can I get to Port Elizabeth
without a f*/*/*ing motor? The problem is, when I push… When I film, I can’t… usually,
I push on the steering thing to put more power on my legs
through using body weight as well. But when I film I can’t do this. So you see, this is freaking why I have a motor. It’s full of private reserves here.
Oh my God, what a beautiful place. And what a nightmare for me! And the very bad thing is that, f*/*/*ing hell, I’m gonna arrive late
for the street braai; oh my God. There are a few antelopes
up in the hills. Oh my God! – Hello! – Hello! How are you?
– I’m good. Yeah. You’re tired? – Yeah, I’m tired. Yeah. – Yeah.
I said to him, “Look where this guy is. I didn’t expect him on the road!”
– Yeah, here I am. – Yeah, yeah. I’m Love. Thank you! Nice to meet you. – I’m Yves, but you know.
– Yeah. Yeah, I know. I know. I’ve seen your YouTube.
Like everybody says, “Stop here”. I said, “Look at these people.
I also want to see him now.” – Exactly, yeah. – Yo! So how
is it going today? – Very good. Yeah. Well, a bit difficult. My motor is having problems,
but… – Oh, no! A question. – Yeah. – Why
didn’t you repair your battery? – I’ve got a new one now!
– You’ve got a new one now? – Yeah, yeah. I’ve got two new ones.
Yeah. – Oh, okay, okay. – Yeah. – But now the motor is… – Now,
the motor is not happy. – Yeah. Where are you going today?
Oudtshoorn? – Before Calitzdorp. – Oh, okay. – Yeah. – Yeah,
you’re nearly there. – Nearly there. Yeah, still… I’ll have food in Ladismith,
and then, there’s still 40 km to go. – It’s a nice place to have food. – Yeah.
– You, I never thought I would meet you. – Yeah, you were on the right time
at the right place. – The right time. Right place. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
– Exactly. – I never thought that. Well, you take care. Ride nice. – Thank you! – And, yeah,
this is a nice area you came through. – Yeah, it’s beautiful here. It’s
very beautiful. Yeah, I like this road. – What’s the wind, backwards?
From your back? – Yeah, the wind is… Yeah, it’s… Yeah, it’s a helping wind. Yeah, but the motor is the main issue
today. – Well, good luck! – Thank you very much! Yeah.
– Okay, take care! – Have a good day! Good luck to you as well! Yeah.
– Thank you, thank you! – Bye-bye! – Bye! So we can finally start to see Ladismith. And we see the second mountain range, and behind this mountain range,
it’s the Karoo! We are in the Klein Karoo,
or the Little Karoo. And behind is the big one,
the real Karoo, the real desert. Oh my god, I’m so,
so freaking slow without a motor. Ladismith at last. It’s full of old cars around here. Hello. – Hello. – Hello! Hello! Hello. Okay, it’s one o’clock. With a motor,
I would have arrived before noon. I should still make it to Calitzdorp today.
It’s gonna be hell of a horrible day. Look at this beautiful house.
Let’s see if I’m on time for the braai. Yeah, sometimes there is a braai here.
It is gone. So no braai for me today. I am destroyed. Hello! – Hello! – Now
we see each other again. – Yes! – Enjoy! – How are you? – Fine. – Good.
How are you? – Tired already? – It’s okay, it’s okay. – Yeah,
just a little bit. There we go! – Where do you sleep tonight?
– Before Calitzdorp. – Calitzdorp. – Calitzdorp? – Just before Calitzdorp.
You need to get there. – Yeah. – This is Ladimisth. – To Calitzdorp.
You’re gonna have lunch here? – Yes. – Yes, good! – You’re tired now.
– I’m hungry. Yeah. – Enjoy! – Hungry. – My freaking motor is dead.
– Hello! – Oh man. – Hello! – Hello! – Hope you don’t mind. – No, I don’t mind.
No. – I’ve been following you on.. – Yes. – …YouTube. You inspired my son…
– Yeah? – …also to do tours. – Oh, really? – Yes, on… But on a bicycle. – Motorbike?
– Not on this. – Ah, on a normal bicycle. Yeah. It’s good! – Oh, this is the guy
trying to do Africa. – Yes. – Yes! He’s currently in China,
so he’s coming… – He’s in China? – Yeah, he’s… – Yeah, he’s coming
next month. – He’s coming next month. And he’s gonna do South Africa.
– Oh, wow! Nice! – Really. – That’s awesome. – Would you mind
if I take a pic and send it to him? He wouldn’t… – No, no worries.
– …believe this. – No problem. – Stand. You may stand next to him.
Cause he will be so chuffed. – Yeah, I imagine. Yeah.
– He’s not gonna believe this! – He’s sending his bike
over also now. – Oh, really? – Yeah, he also got the bike
now with the battery. – Oh, a motorized bike? – Yeah.
– Yes. – …the same as yours now. – Yeah, it’s assisted also.
Yeah. – Assisted? – Yeah. – Yes. – Motor-assisted? – Yeah,
because… – He was… – But he couldn’t send
the battery now with a plane. – Yeah, because the batteries,
they cannot fly. – Yeah, they cannot fly.
– It’s hard to transport those batteries. – Can I take a photo? – Yeah,
yeah. Of course, yeah. – I’ve been… Oh, we were in China for about a year.
– Oh, really? – And he made us watch this. And after the first few episodes,
I started watching it on my own. But you enjoy your endeavors
in my beautiful country. – Thank you very much! Yeah.
– I send it off to him now. – Be safe. – Thank you! Yeah, it’s okay. – It’s not the safest stop,
safest, but just be safe. – Yeah, in general, it’s okay.
– And all the best. Let’s go! – I’m sending it to you now.
– Thank you! – Bye-bye! – Bye-bye. – I’m sending it to you now.
– Let’s go! – Yeah. Well, that’ll… – Let’s not keep him up.
He’s got lots to do. – Where are you going to
overnight? – Before Calitzdorp. – Before Calitzdorp? – Okay.
– Yeah. – Okay, Calitzdorp, it’s not… It’s not too far from here
now. – Not too far. – Yeah. It’s 40 km from here.
Yeah. – And then Oudtshoorn. – We’re going to
overnight in Oudtshoorn. And then we’re going way back
into the coast. – Ah, okay. – So how far are you going now?
– Back up to Europe slowly, slowly. – No, but here in South Africa,
what…? Where…? How far are you…? – To Lesotho. – Lesotho? – Yeah.
– So you’re going straight down then. – Oh, wintertime, you’re gonna hit there.
– Yeah, I’m gonna hit there in winter. Yeah. – Snow. – It’s gonna…
– Most probably snow. – It’s gonna be cold. Yeah.
– You must probably gonna get some… – This is the bike. There’s someone
riding his bike now. – Oh, nice. That’s nice, yeah. – Let’s go. – This is
quite… – He’s hungry. He’s thirsty. – Where do you think I should eat: here
or there? – They’re always quite nice. I eat there. – Oh, there it’s quite nice?
– Yeah, but you can try both. – Yeah. We eat there, but I… – I’ll try this one.
I’ll try this one. Yes. – I don’t know. – Okay, good luck. – You
normally go to this one? – Yeah. – Okay, I’ll go to the other one. Thank you! Yeah, the issue is
that I’m freaking starving. I need to eat. And this restaurant we came to
with my mother yesterday… It was good, but the problem is,
it was slow. And I’m hungry. So, hopefully, I can find
another one, which is faster. So here, it’s full
of those classic cars, you see? – Where are you going?
Where do you come from? – France. – From France?
– Yeah. – Jeez, what? Where did you start?
– From France. – From France? – Yeah. – And where
are you going now? – I’m starting my way
back towards France. So I reached Cape Town,
and then I’m gonna… – Where are you going
now, this way? – This way. Yeah, east, towards Mozambique.
And then, I’ll go back up. – When did you start this now? – Three… Today from before… 40 km from here. – France? – Yeah. – Cool! – Hello! – Hello! Do you have food here?
– Yes! Yes, yes! – Ah, awesome. Oh, great. – And we’ve got pulled pork pita. – Oh, yeah. – And in the fridge
there, we’ve got croissants. We’ve got ham and cheese.
Or you have a wrap. – Nice. – And then, if you want a healthy snack,
there’s a chickpea salad. Or you can have a smoothie
that we just add the milk. And we blend it for you. – Ah, okay.
– Yeah. – I’ll have a smoothie like this. – Yeah. – What’s that? That’s…
– It’s milk tart. – Milk tart? – Yeah. It’s very… It’s nice and sweet.
– Oh, it’s sweet. Yeah. – Yeah. – I’ll get one like this. – Okay.
– And what salty [food] do you have? – I’ve got a quiche as well.
– Quiche? – Yeah. Are you…? – I… – I’ve got one spinach
and one is bacon and cheese. – Okay. – What would you like?
– I’ll get the two. – Both of them? – Yeah, both of them. – And I want
to take a photo with you. – Okay. – Once you’ve finished everything, before you leave, we’ll take a photo
with my grandma, Sophia. – Okay, no problem. Yeah, yeah.
– Okay. – Great! – All right. – Perfect. – Take a seat. If you want to use
the bathroom, it’s over there. – Okay, fantastic. – Yeah. – What
do you want to drink, you said? – The smoothie. – The smoothie? – I’ll get… – Only the smoothie
or water as well? – Yeah, I’ll get… Do you have, like,
sparkling water or…? – I’ve only got still,
but I’ve got lemon iced tea. Big bottle. And big Cokes. – That’s
real Coke or…? – It’s Coke, yeah. Bestie. – I’ll get a Coke.
Yeah. – Okay. – Yes. – All right. – Sorry, I’ve got to talk to you.
– Yeah! – Hi, Marco. – Yves. – Yves? How’s it? – Yes. Good. – So where
are you cycling from? – France. – From France?! – Yes. – Yes,
that’s nice. – How? – Slowly, slowly. – So where did you come from
now? – Today, 40 km from here. – 40 km from here today. – Okay, so you
started…? – A farm, Wolverfontein farm. – Okay, but you started from France.
How did you get from France to here? – Via the Middle East, East Africa.
– You’ve been cycling since then? – Yeah. Usually, it’s electric.
Today, the motor doesn’t work. But usually, it’s electric,
so it’s assisted. – Assisted. – It’s a little bit easier. But today
the motor doesn’t work. So today… Today it’s a pain in the ass.
– So how are you gonna fix it? – I don’t know.
I’ll see. I’ll figure it out. – So… – Yes. – My question is… Go.
– Here’s the guy now. – Oh, hello! – He’s the one with the cycle.
– Hello! – Yeah, yeah. – You know, I literally bought
my bike the other day. – Yeah, your parents told me because… – Yeah, I’m planning to start in China, going all the way down
to Africa because of you. – That’s awesome! Yeah. – Anyway, I hope that [background laughter]
to eat. I will let you eat in peace. It was nice meeting you. – Nice
meeting you. Yeah. I’m really glad you… Yeah, you’re gonna do this somehow
because of me. Sorry, I’m tired today. Cuz my motor doesn’t work,
so I’m very hungry. – Okay. No, no. You eat. But I just wanted to let you know
you inspired many people, you know? – That’s awesome. – And I think
that’s all. Thank you! Nice to meet you. – Nice to meet you, too.
– Nice to meet you, Yves. Keep up! – Good luck to you then in your travels.
– Okay, bye. You go safely. – Bye! – Okay, bye-bye. – Thank you! – Well done. – Thank you! – Well done. – Why does everyone have a…? I see there are many, like, old cars
on this route. – We are on a rally. – Ah, you’re on a rally? – Yeah. – Because I noticed, like, today, “How
is it possible that there are so many…?” Thank you very much. – You’re
welcome. – That there are so many… That’s all classic collection cars, right?
– Yes. – Oh, so you’re on a rally. – 1980s. – 1980s? Ah, beautiful. Thank you very much! – You’re welcome.
– Okay. – So, no motorβ€”Coke allowed. Yes. – Ice. – Thank you
very much! – Thank you! Hopefully, I’ll see my mother
at some point. I thought my motor… I hoped my motor would work. I’ll need to give her
some weight. It’s hell. Two quiches. What’s great is this is gonna be
the best meal of my life, I’m sure. Spinach meal. Spinach quiche. Oh my god, this is so good. Oh, this is so good. – Good luck to you, eh? – Thank you!
– I’ll go and get the bill. Yeah. – Oudtshoorn. – Where
is the rally going? – Oudtshoorn. – Ah, Oudtshoorn. – Thank you!
– Bye! I’ve been following you. – Oh, really? – Yes! That’s why
I knew when you stopped, I said… – You knew me. Okay. – I said
to her, “Look who’s outside.” So yeah, cuz I know you’ve been riding
for quite some time now, eh? – Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s been more
than… Well, almost four years now. – Wow. – Yeah. I travel very slowly. So you’re from Cape Town? – No,
from Caledon, which is Hermanus. – Ah, okay. – And that is on that side…
– Oh, Caledon. Ah, okay. I see, yeah. – Yeah. – Yeah. – Close to the sea. – Okay.
– I’ve only been living here now for… This is my fifth year. – Okay.
– I used to be in the hotel industry. And I lived in Europe. I lived in Croatia,
in Zagreb. – Ah, okay. – Yeah, and I had… Many years ago, I had a French boyfriend. – Oh, really? Oh, okay. So you’ve got
a connection with France. Yeah. – Yeah, Emmanuel de la MagΓ©lier. – Hm?
– Was his name. Emmanuel. He was… – Oh, Emmanuel. Yeah. – Yeah, he was
a French journalist at the time of… You know, when we… Just segregation. As we went into democratic,
he came to South Africa, yes, to do… – To do some… – Journalism, yes,
on… High, Darryl! To do journalism. You know, when they were covering… – During the political changes.
– Yes, yeah. At the end of apartheid. – Democratic… Yeah, so… – Oh, wow.
Interesting. That’s how you met him. – Yes. And then,
I was going to live in France. And then, I went to live in Croatia.
So it was a change. – Ah, okay. Interesting. – But yeah. That’s fine.
So, then how do you travel back? Do you go via Africa? – Yeah,
I’m going back via West Africa. – Okay, so now from here, you go up
to Johannesburg? – Well, I’m gonna… Yeah, I’m gonna do a loop, an 8. So I’m gonna go towards Lesotho,
Mozambique. – Yeah, yeah. – So I can do Mozambique and Zim. – Okay. – And then, I’ll go back
towards Angola and then via West Africa. – Is that the way you came down as well? – No, because I came down via East Africa,
but then I crossed towards Namibia. – Yeah. Oh, okay. So now, yeah.
– Through the… – I think that was… With a Namibian leg, it could have been. But I know there was coverage of you
on TV as well when they were talking about this guy who was cycling. – Oh, maybe. Yeah, yeah, I don’t… Yeah, yeah. – But that was a year
and a half ago if I’m not mistaken. – Oh, yeah! – Could’ve been.
– Yeah, I… Yeah, it’s… I’m so slow. – But you are very fortunate, eh? Because… I mean, it takes a lot
of hardship and a lot… I mean stamina. – Yeah. Yeah, you’ve got to be motivated
somehow. Very motivated, yeah. You’ve got to be determined.
Otherwise, you don’t do it. – Yeah. – Yeah. – I was going to ask
if I could use water there that’s… Almost chucked it away. …must be.
And why did you decide to do it? Just…? – I love traveling, so… – Is it?
Okay. The unconventional way. – Yeah, but this makes it more
enjoyable. It forces you to go slow. So it forces you to go to the places
where other people don’t go. – But is it electric? – Yeah. But today,
my motor doesn’t work. – Oh my word. And how are you going
to get your motor sourced? – I don’t know. I’ll see… Maybe
I need to get a new one sent or… Or there might be a way to fix it,
but I don’t have the tools to do it. So maybe I… – Because there’s… Around the corner,
at the back, there’s a workshop. There’s a guy who works
on cars. – Oh, really? Yeah, but I’ll see. Today I have…
My mother follows me, so I have… – Oh, okay. – I have to try
to reach Calitzdorp and… – Yeah. – I’ll need to… Without the motor,
I’ll need the whole day to reach there. – Yeah, yeah. – So… – Maybe
you’ll get a… – I won’t have time. In Oudtshoorn, I’ll try
to… – Yeah, Oudtshoorn. You should have… This…
– In Oudtshoorn, I’ll try to find… – Yeah. – …someone to help. – But you’re going to have to cycle
when you get to before Calitzdorp because, you know, the uphill.
– Yeah. – That’s a bit of… Well, all the best there
with that one. But don’t… – It’s gonna be a bit of pain. Yeah.
– We’re going to take a photo with you. – Yeah. No, yeah. – Yeah, my name
is Joy. Joy? – Yeah. – I’m Yves, then. – I know, I know. – Yeah, I…
– I know. – Nice to meet you then! – Nice to meet you, too. – I can see you’ve lived abroad because you don’t really have
the South African accent. – A lot of people say it. I think because I lived in England,
I grew up English, and then… – Ah, you lived in England
as well. – Yeah. – That’s why. – And then, obviously, living in Europe where people don’t really speak
English as a second language. – Yeah, it’s true. Yeah. – So you pick up,
you know, the various accents. But yeah, I reckon so as well. – Yeah. I’ve heard it before. When I worked on Table Mountain
many years ago, people used to ask me
what island I was from. – Oh, really? – Yeah! – No,
it makes sense because… – I used to say
the island of South Africa. Okay, so the smoothie is on me. – Okay. – That is with compliments
from me, the smoothie. – Thank you very much then. – Okay. Oh my god. I’ll have to eat constantly this afternoon. Oh, the quiche is really good. Let’s try the smoothie, guys. Oh, yeah. Oh, this is very good.
This is definitely gonna help. Oh, it’s sweet. It’s good. What’s the toasties? – I’ve got plain cheese, cheese
and tomato, ham and cheese, chicken mayo, bacon
and cheese, bacon and egg. – It’s bread? – Yeah.
– It’s a toast, right? – Yes. I’ve got oats and honey bread
or whole-wheat bread. – Ham, ham… I’ll get a ham and cheese. – Okay. – Ham and cheese on oats
and honey is very nice. – I’ll… Sorry? – The ham and cheese
on oats and honey is very nice. – Ah, really? – Yeah, she made me one
this morning. – Ah, okay. – Yeah, yeah. – Either ham and cheese
or bacon and cheese. – Okay. – So I’ll get bacon and cheese
on the honey… – On oats and honey. Do you want a side salad with it?
– Yes. – Okay. Can I get you some… Greek salad with some tomato
and cucumber and stuff? – Yeah, yeah. – Okay, I’ll make one
now. – Thank you! – You’re welcome! What a beautiful place. Hi! – Hi, hi, hi. – Hi. – Hello. – You’re driving that?
– Yes! – From where to where? – I came from France with this.
– From France? – Yeah. And I’m going back to France now.
– [FR] Do you speak French? – Yes. – In which time?
– It’s almost four years… It’s been almost four years
since I’ve been on the road. – Four years on the road? – Yeah. – Are you doing this
to raise funds for charity or…? – No, just because I like it. – And do you work between…?
– Yeah, I make videos, so I’m… I work here, but… This is kind of
my job. Yeah. – …documentary. – Exactly, I document my travels
and… – Yeah. – That’s my work. – That’s your work. – Yeah. – Okay. – Enjoy, man. – Where are you from?
– Germany. – Germany? Okay. Nice. – Four years?! – But I’ve stayed now, the last two years more
or less, in Cape Town. – Ah, okay. So you’re
in Cape Town now. Okay. – Yeah. – Nice. It’s very
pleasant here. Yeah. – Yeah. – This is… – Okay.
– …well equipped for a long… – It’s well equipped
for long journeys. Yeah. – Enjoy, sir. – Thank you! – Haven’t you…? – Thank you very much.
Yeah. – Haven’t you had funny incidents? – Not that many. A few,
but not that many. – Okay. – Another… A bit more food. I need food. Oh, yes. Good. Oh, this is very good. Oh, yeah. Bacon and cheese. Very good. – Very good, very good. – I’ve got curious people. So, because my motor doesn’t work,
then… I need more fuel. – Yeah. – Awesome! – …grandmom.
Yeah, that’s my restaurant, my… Don’t forget we need to take a photo.
– Yeah, yeah. Of course, yeah. But I’ll need to pay before the photo. – So the quiche and then your sandwich
with salad. – Okay. – 176. – Great. Perfect! – Yeah, because the smoothie
is on me. – Is on… Thank you very much. – That’s my contribution to your…
– Thanks. That’s very nice of you. There you go. – Thank you! There we go. – All right.
– Thank you! – Very good. And you wanted inside with…
– Yeah, with my grandmother. – With your grandmother? – Yeah, come.
– The grandmother. – Yeah, that’s a blip. – Okay, give us a good French smile. – A good French smile, yes.
– Good. – Thank you! Merci! – [FR] You’re welcome.
My pleasure. – [EN] Yeah. – [FR] Thank you very much!
Danki. Baie, baie… – Yes, that’s good. That’s good. – Baie
danki, no? – Yeah. – Something like this. Remember, I haven’t spoken French
in over six… – Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. – Yeah, so all I can say is “au revoir”. – Okay. Do you want one
with the bicycle as well or…? – Ah, well, I can do it. – Okay. What’s the name of your shop?
– Sophia. – Oh, Sophia. – Yeah. – Okay. – It’s named after my grandmother…
– Ah, okay. – You saw her photo now. Her name was Sophia. – Okay. – Yeah.
– So you like your grandmother very much. – Yeah, she was very good to me. – Sorry? – What town or city
in France? I grew up in Soissons. It’s a small town in northern France
between Paris and Belgium. It was the first capital
of France, though. – Wow! But now, it’s a small forgotten town. It was a capital for like just 30 years. – Wow, okay. – When France was created
a thousand five hundred years ago. Okay. But good luck!
– Thank you very much! Yeah. – Yeah. – Yeah. – Good luck,
good luck. – Thank you very much. Yeah. – What’s your next stop?
– Calitzdorp. – Calitzdorp. Yeah. – We came through Calitzdorp,
before Calitzdorp, that little… – Yeah, I think 8 km before… – Okay. – …something like that, there are
some farms on the way. Yeah. – Good luck! – Enjoy your day!
Thank you very much! Yeah. Hello! I’ll get some… – Wet biltong?
– Wet biltong, please. Yeah. – With fat? No fat? – With fat. – Quarter bag,
full bag? – Full… Full bag. – Full. Thank you! – Thank you very much! Hello. – Hello, hello! Here we go. – I don’t… – Cash? – Cash.
– No problem, yeah. – If it’s possible. How much is it? – 114.60. Thank you
so much! – Thank you very much! Have a good day! – Enjoy!
You too. Bye-bye! – Bye-bye. [FR] I’ve got some biltong.
– Yes, well done. – All the best! Good luck!
– Thank you very much! Yeah. – May I have a photo with you? – Yeah.
No worries. Yeah, yeah, yeah. – Okay. From France to South Africa.
And where else? France… – France, across Europe, the Middle East,
and then across Africa. – Okay, last one. – Okay. Heads up! – Good luck!
– All the best. – Thank you very much! – Good luck! – Thank you very much!
Have a good day. – Thank you! – It doesn’t want to start. – Okay. – I’m waiting for my mother
to see if she manages to buy meat. – Where did she go? – Just put it
in low gear and go. – It still works. That’s the thing. It’s just
that I’m slower. – Yeah. – Yeah. – That’s the only thing, but…
– Put it in the low and go. – Exactly. [FR] You made it? – Yes. – Well done! – I even paid in cash. – Well done! – So… It’ll be fine? – Yes,
it’ll be fine. – But it’s climbing! – Yes, it climbs. Then I’ll go slow.
– Did I drop something? – Au revoir! – Au revoir! Thank you
very much! – Bye-bye! – Bye-bye! Bye-bye! Thank you! – Bye! – Danki.
[FR] See you later, mom! – See you! – I’ll arrive more around 6 pm
then. – Okay. – [EN] Let’s go, guys! Oh my god! Come on, I’ve got
power! It’s all in the head. Let’s go! Hello. – Hello! – Hello! Route 62! Let’s go, baby! So I did give
a bit of weight to my mother, as I found my mother in Ladismith. Well, but I guess
I still have a lot of weight. So it’s 40 km. F*/*/*ing hell.
Four hours of daylight left. I should make it just for sunset.
400 m of climbing this afternoon. Hello! Interesting. Oh, what a beautiful place!
Wow! – Hello! Hello, hello. – Hello, hello! – Hello. Yo, nice! – Nice, yes.
– Yo, how is it? – Yeah, okay. – Yo, I watch your videos on TikTok
all the time. – Oh, you watch my videos. – Yeah. – Yeah. – But now I’m gonna
show the guys I’ve also seen you… – You’ve seen me in real. Yeah.
– Yeah, in real life. – That’s great. – Yeah. – What’s your name?
– I’m Ronuel. – Ronuel? – Yeah. – Yves. – Okay. How are you?
– Very good! Nice to meet you. – Nice to meet you, also. So,
you ride with this thing? – Yeah. – Yo, it looks nice. – Slowly, slowly. – Yeah, but you’re getting there.
– Yeah, I’m getting there. Slowly, slowly, I’m moving. – Yeah, but at the time I saw you,
you were very far. – Yeah. Yeah, that’s true. Yeah.
– Look where you’re now. – Definitely. – You are in the Karoo
now. – In the Karoo. Yeah. – Yeah, on your way on Route 62. – You’re right. – Yeah. Well,
you must have a nice day. – Thank you! You too! – Yeah.
– Enjoy your day! – Thanks! – Nice meeting you! What a place! Welcome to Zoar! And it’s getting more
and more remote now. Hello! – Where are you from?
– Hello! – Where are you going now? – Calitzdorp. – Calitzdorp? – Yes.
– My name is Carl. – I’m Yves. – Yves? Yes, I’m following you
on your YouTube videos. – Okay, nice. – That’s very good. Are you on your way from Cape Town
now? – Yeah. Well, I resumed. I took a break already. And I restarted
from Swellendam. – Swellendam? – Yeah. – Okay. So do you…? Then
you transport this bike of yours? – Yeah, I transport it from… I stored it
in Cape Town for some months and… – Some months? – And… – So where
are you going now? Calitzdorp. And then? – And then
towards Lesotho, Mozambique, Zim. – Wow! – Then back to Europe.
– How many kilometers so far? – 20,000. – 20,000?! – Yeah.
– It’s crazy. – Yeah. – It’s crazy. And how long have you been
on the road now? – Almost four years now.
– Four years? – Yeah. – Damn; well, I can’t believe
that I’m meeting you in person now because, as I said,
I follow you on YouTube. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. – I’m
on my way to Oudtshoorn now. I live in Oudtshoorn. – Okay.
– And then, suddenly, I saw these flags. And I thought it couldn’t be you. – Yeah, you were at the right time
at the right place somehow. – Yeah. Are you well? Do you feel well?
– Yeah, I’m okay. Yeah, yeah. Well, my motor is not very well, but… – Yeah. – Yeah. – So does it help you
a bit? The battery… – Usually, yes. Today it doesn’t work.
– What’s wrong? – I don’t know. Shimano motors sometimes have errors. And you can’t make them work
for some reason. – Yeah. Okay. So I mean, you are not married? – No. – And that’s the way you enjoy
your life now? – Yeah, I love my… I’ll enjoy life like this. Yeah. – So you don’t feel at any time in danger
here in South Africa, nothing? – No. Well, I know there are some areas here
you have to be a bit careful, but… – Yeah. Okay, that’s so, so good
to meet you. And everything of the best! Well, you’re my hero. I must be honest.
– Thank you! – I mean, I don’t think I can use this thing and go to Calitzdorp. – Yeah, Calitzdorp, you could, but then
it’s the longer version that is harder. Yeah. – It’s harder. Yeah. – Yeah. – Okay,
do you lose some kilos on the way? – Yeah. Definitely! – Definitely?
– Yes. – Okay, and the most… The worst thing you ever
experienced on the road? On the road with the bike? Well, it’s probably when my frame
broke before Nairobi, but… I would say for me,
the main danger is drivers, when sometimes
they don’t give you enough space and they pass very close. – Yeah. – I would say the main danger
is the road itself. – Okay. – But it’s… Well, I had the elephants also
in Botswana, which were a little bit… – Yeah, I saw this episode.
– One got angry. But I guess that’s
a real danger as well. Yeah. I guess it’s cars, some cars
that are a bit careless and… – Yeah. – And some type of wildlife
that is not very friendly, also. – Why did you choose this kind
of bike? Is it…? – It’s comfortable. Yeah. – Comfortable?
– Yeah, it’s very comfortable. And if it’s assisted,
it’s nice. It’s not too hard. But without the assistance,
it’s a bit of a different story. – Yeah. Okay. Thanks for your time!
– You’re welcome. – All the best! Welcome to South Africa,
to the Little Karoo! – Thank you very much!
It’s beautiful here. – Yeah, it’s beautiful.
And to all the ostriches, say “hi”. – Okay, okay. – Greetings!
Thank you, sir! – I will. – Enjoy your trip!
– Thank you very much! Yeah. – Okay, bye! – Bye-bye. – Bye-bye! – Bye-bye!
Thank you! And my mother is back. She’s completely flabbergasted
with my broken motor. – [FR] You’re already here!!!
– Yeah, it was kind of downhill. – It’s incredible how fast you go!
– Now there’s 10 km of climbing. I’ll be slower. – Give me things.
– No, today it should be fine. I’ll arrive at 6 pm. Oudtshoorn will also be fine. – I see. – Then there’s a pass between Oudtshoorn
and Wilderness. Then we’ll see. I missed… I forgot to film. I forgot to film when I told her
that the motor was broken. You should have seen the face. I don’t know how long it’s gonna last,
but my motor restarted. Look at that! Let’s see if it works. Wow! Incredible. I’m lucky
we are in a climb. Wow! Let’s go, baby! This climb is so sweet with the motor. What a place! And I can talk to you again
because I’m not constantly exhausted. What a place! Oh my god,
I am happy. What a country! What a beautiful padstal! Look at these funny flowers. That’s a really funny plants. Huisrivier Pass. No more climbing
for today! Freaking hell! Luckily, I had the motor for this pass. Huisrivier Pass. Yes! What a freaking
crazy day. Oh my god! Whoa! Oh my god. What a place! That’s freedom, man! 2 km to go. What a valley. Look at that! And here
we turn. How do you enter here? I guess there is a code
in the message I received. Hopla! What’s this noise?
Isinkaβ€”to the left. Oh my god. This is gonna be quite sporty. What a place! I think my mother
is already here. Hello! – [FR] Already!!! – It restarted! – Really? – Yeah. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? – It’s not 20mΒ². – It’s not 20mΒ²? – No!
– It’s 200mΒ², isn’t it? – Almost. – I need to send them a message.
They want to come… – Okay. – …say hi. – Oh la la! How beautiful it is!
Yves, I don’t want to bother you, but… Your green thing, you don’t need
to use it. We can’t see it anymore. We can’t see anything. We see
your flags, but this is useless. – It’s not greenβ€”it’s yellow.
– Well, there is nothing. It’s as if you had nothing.
It’s like black. Oh la la, what a day! – Yeah, what a day.
– When did it start again? – Down the hill. – Really? – The big hill there.
– The big hill? – 3:50 pm. – You tried again? – Yeah.
– You tried all the time? – Regularly. I was trying
less often, but… – Oh la la la la. – And voila. – It’s a paradise here.
Look at that! – It’s beautiful, isn’t it? – We’re actually almost in Calitzdorp.
It’s 8 km away. – Yeah, we’re 8 km away. – I thought we were further away.
– But there’s a climb before. – Yeah, a small climb. Well, small. Small in a car, but it might be big. – Yeah, if I don’t have the motor,
I’ll struggle. – Yeah, because it’s… – If it’s steep, I can’t…
I’m not strong enough. Let’s go to see our place, guys! So we paid for two people for two rooms,
one room each, 1,200, so $60. Huh? – [FR] I’ll go for a stroll. – Yeah, yeah. Oh my god! This looks
like my mother’s room. Not bad, not bad. Big shower. Toilet. A balcony somehow.
Oh, there is an outside shower. Look at that! Oh my god, this is beautiful.
Always the information thing. I am tired. So this is, well, very big. It’s funny
because it was written only 20mΒ². Looks like it’s slightly bigger. And this is my room, I guess. Big bed. Big comfy bed.
Awesome. There is a garden behind. I think we can even take
the vegetables in the garden. I’m not sure though.
I need to reread the messages. F*/*/*ing hell. The showers. The showers are beautiful.
What a place! An outside shower as well. Oh my god! So this was
the second day. Freaking hell. This way back towards Europe is starting
in quite an adventurous fashion! What a day! Okay. See you for the next
adventures! Ciao, guys!

  4. This engine problem is really worrying. It smacks of a preventative replacement. Imagine if it had happened in Tanzania when you were almost stuck on that dirt road. Personally, I opted for a Bosch, which is apparently more reliable, but it's starting to scare me a little.
I didn't know there was also a Ladysmith in South Africa; I was thinking of Ladysmith in KZN. πŸ˜‚
Quick question. If I understand correctly, you're going to Mozambique and then Zimbabwe. Are you going to go back through Zambia to reach Angola?
Good luck with the rest of your adventure. Winter is ending (summer here too), but you might suffer on the slopes of Lesotho.

  6. An "E010" error on an electric bike indicates a communication failure between the bike's main components, such as the controller, display, or motor, and is most often caused by loose or damaged wiring, but can also point to a faulty component or a low battery. To troubleshoot, first, try re-seating all electrical connections, including the motor and battery, ensuring they are secure. If the problem persists, you may need to replace a component like the controller or consult the e-bike manufacturer's support for further diagnosis.

  7. Hello, the motor is 99.9% ok! You should check all the connectors for dirt/oxidation. I'm currently getting my Mercedes C-Class ready for the German TÜV inspection after it's been out of service for three years, and I've had problems with some electronic components that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. In all cases, it was dirt or oxidation of the fuses and connectors, which I was able to completely fix!

Courage Yves!
